If you ever make another video on Historic LGBTQ+ people(which I'm sure you will), you might want to include Julie D'aubigny. She was an opera singer in the 17th century and openly bisexual. She also cross-dressed. Julie was never afraid to get into a sword duel over a cute lady(or lad) and, when questioned about her true gender, would rip open her shirt and fight with her breasts out. In order to provoke a fight, she would often shout taunts to the men in question. And she's also proof that non-straight people can be religious. Absolute legend.

Could you do a historical profile on Sally Ride? She was the first american woman in space. It wasnt revealed till after her death that she was lesbian when her partner wrote her obituary. Speaking of education. Did you know that Sophia Jex Blake is on the English History GCSE curriculum as of 2021. I finished high school last year and started the History GCSE in 2018 when I began the course and had known of Jex Bake before then. Also Queen Elizabeth I was probably ace, famously never married, maybe had a romantic relationship or 2 and unknown whether or not she was virgin and she is obviously on the curriculum (one of if not the greatest of English monarchs).
@jennifermccarthy67332 жыл бұрын
@@bensmith1955 yes... Except that at high school we were taught that QE1 had male lovers, but never married because then she'd have shared the monarchy with who ever she married....🤦♀️🤷♀️
@bensmith19552 жыл бұрын
@@jennifermccarthy6733 I don't recall that she had any lovers in terms of sexual interaction. That whole virgin queen thing was an immense source of political and religious power, she as a canny politician would never have jeopardised this. She undoubtable fell in love with Robert Dudley and would have married him, if he wasn't implicated in the death of his wife in an unfortunate fight with a staircase.
@jennifermccarthy67332 жыл бұрын
@@bensmith1955 "male lovers" at a Catholic school aren't the same as "male lovers" in every day life 🤣 Somehow never occured to me (or my history teacher apparently) that 'normal' people mightn't consider them lovers just because they 'never had' sex 🤷♀️ Although I guess you did purport she was ace and not aro, and she could have been ace and still had the male lovers... 🤔 The implication that I remember however was "she was Christian and never married, (because then she'd have shared the monarchy), so of course she wouldn't have consummated a relationship, however much she wanted to" Maybe (hopefully!) it's taught with a different emphasis now (or perhaps it always was in non-christian schools!?) I thought there was another potential match - beyond Dudley? (You'll have to forgive me, I'm going back 15 years!)
@bensmith19552 жыл бұрын
@@jennifermccarthy6733 yes there were many other matches such as the brother of the French king (not married because of politics and religion) and Ivan the Terrible (not sure on why they never married, Elizabeth was dropped from my school due to Covid). I also never went to a Catholic school, rather a Church of England school. There has also not been much evidence, if any to suggest that she had physical lovers and I believed that there was one instance which she was disgusted by a conversation on it (I may be wrong, again I didn't complete my course on Elizabeth at GCSE but I will revisit her next year for A-level).

I feel like everyone should know about Mark Ashton, he was truly great man who died too young and could have done so much more. Mark was a political and civil rights activist, ever since he got into politics as a teenager he helped to fight for the rights of anyone being oppressed whether that be by their employer, the government or both. In 1984 a few months into the miners strike it was becoming more and more obvious to him that there were similarities in the way the government were treating the miners and their families and the way the government treated LGBT people. At the 1984 London Pride March he and his friend Mike Jackson carried buckets asking for donations to help support the miners and their families. Shortly after the march the group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners was formed, the group spent the next year raising money to help buy food, clothes, pay bills and pay the bail of people who were being wrongly arrested on the picket lines in the Dulais Valley, South Wales. They raised approximately £20,000 over that year. When the strike ended the miners and their families didn't forget the support they had received from them and at the 1985 London Pride March the miners and their families came to London and alongside LGSM they led the march that year, it was one of the first times that such a large amount of straight people marched in solidarity with the LGBT community at the London Pride March. The miners further supported the LGBT community after that by helping to push motions raised at the Labour Party Conference to enshrine gay and lesbian rights into their manifesto, something which although it had been raised before and getting denied, finally passed. Mark continued to fight for other workers rights over the next couple of years and while standing on the picket lines alongside print workers in 1987 he began to suffer terrible cough which only got worse and more painful. He had been diagnosed with HIV about 18 months earlier but he never let it stop him from fighting for others. On the 30th January 1987 it had eventually got so bad that he had to go to the hospital, it was then that he was diagnosed with AIDS. Mark died on the 11th February 1987 from Pneumonia brought on by AIDS. He was only 26 years old but in his short life he had, he managed to help bring solidarity between two communities, the miners and LGBT people, which even just a few months before LGSM was formed would have seemed impossible but that solidarity is something that was finally able to bring in some protection for Queer people and i think that's pretty amazing. The movie "Pride" and the book "Pride: The Unlikely Story of the True Heroes of the Miners' Strike" are great for learning some more about Mark and LGSM. Also the song "For a Friend" by The Communards was written for Mark by Jimmy Somerville who was Marks best friend and a member of LGSM. The song is quite a beautiful tribute to a great man lost way to soon.

Someone that could be presented in a episode of your historical figures serie is Rose Valland, for her bravery and her determination to protect art in time of war despite putting her life on the line. During WW2, she spied the looting by Nazis of the collections of art that passed at the Jeu de Paume Museum and were from the greatests Jewish art dealers in Paris. With the help of her notes, the Monuments Men knew almost all the locations of the storage of the art that was stolen. While she never came out publicly, she did publish the thesis of her lover after her death. She is now burried with this lover in the familial plot. Another interesting fact is that she was more educated that other women of her time and that she pursue higher education despite her socio-economie backgroung.

Konopnicka was a poet, novelist, children's writer, translator, journalist, critic. Dulębianka an artist, poet, publicist. Both were feminist activists for women's rights and for Polish independence. Maria Dulębianka even ran as a candidate in the 1908 election for the Parliament of Galicia (name of a crownland of the Austrian Empire in Poland, as it was under ocupation from 1772 till 1918), but was rejected because she was a woman. Seeing you being at least a little bit better and learning about all these amazing human beings who fought for the right things in the past, helped me alot to unwind from a very stressful day - so thank you a lot, Jessica... I know you probably won´t see this, but you work towards becoming and already being just as iconic as the people in your video! Lots of love from Germany and get well soon!

You're just so funny when you laugh in the face of your pain! It's so good to see you back, and that you feel well enough to do so. I realized [just now] on how much preparation and research actually goes into of one of your documentaries on your channel, and I personally want to thank you for that. Love has no boundaries, and learning about other beautiful souls enriches all of our lives for the better. Thank you! 😊

oh deadass i had just finished searching to see if you'd said anything about what's happening all over the world right now or were going to mention ANY support for Black folks AT ALL when i hit 1:30 in the video + exhaled. didn't even realize i was holding my breath. cause i really love this channel + wanted to remain a supporter but can't afford to support folks who can't vocally or visibly support us. glad i was able to exhale. whew. this is a great list. ❤✊🏾 thanks.

First so nice to have you back you've been missed , sorry about the issues with your leg still ! You have a gift for teaching you actually make it interesting and fun . You always make want to find out more about these people . Where I would go on the internet or in another time go to my library ! I grow up with a young man named Barry and we always played together . He was the wife and I was husband ! That said alot about who we were even then . Barry choose to be exactly who he was and believe me it wasn't easy . While I remain in my closet afraid of being who I truly was . Sometime later Barry died of aids and his mom brought home to the old neighborhood to buried him . That funeral was packed with some colorful people I'm sure he would have loved it ! Take care of each other ! ❤😷

I'm loving pride month because I'm depressed alot (even more than normal) and just the appreciation of everyone in the LGBTQ+ community, POC, immigrants and just everyone, all of us lovely rainbow people makes me just feel more colourful if you know what I mean. Just warm, and hopeful that maybe it can get better and let's hope we can all stand together in every way and make society a better place finally after POC being treated so badly for this damn long xxx

So good to see you, you glorious wonder. You are a human prism, dear lady. Light doesn’t just hit you and go dull or reflect whatever lame color is painted on. No, darling, you take in light and flare out all colors of the spectrum, magnifying all those glorious wavelengths and translating them for the world to see and admire. Thank you for keeping rainbows inside you, ready for a brilliant fling of acceptance and love at a moment’s notice. Even when you’re having a rough time with the German pronunciations.

I’m so happy Ruth Ellis was mentioned!!! She was born in my hometown and went to the high school I go to, so I love hearing about her lol. A local college in Springfield has/had (I’m unsure if it’s still there) a monument dedicated to her and other Black people who made Springfield what it is today. Our local library also had a showing of a documentary made about her. She’s not very frequently talked about, so I’m really happy to see her here!!!!!

Thank you for keeping in the evidence of you struggling to manage your physical symptoms! XXX It is so heartwarming to see the honesty and truth of someone with chronic & recent health conditions getting on with life even if it's harder than usual. Thanks for not pretending to be 'perfect', thanks for the gift of your honesty.

I love the video and historical content about LGBTQ people who were trailblazers for our 'cause'. I enjoy everything you do, Jessica. If you read from the telephone directory I would still watch you! However I am really sorry you were in such a lot of pain. Please rest and get better. Incidentally I have a bulging disc between L5 and S1. I slipped the disc in 1982 but it was treated and I was off work as a district nurse for 6 months. I had to go on 3 week bedrest (that has probably changed now) and went back to work wearing a very uncomfortable corset for 6 month on office duty. After all that it was ok and I resumed 'normal' life. I got severe ME in 1988 and I was retired on ill health grounds and was given an NHS pension. I thank the Lord I became a nurse because, as long as I don't spend ridiculously, I can live comfortably. I also get mobility allowance which helps run our car. My disc went again in 2011 but this time it was different. It did get a little better with physiotherapy but in 2015 it finally decided to stay out and slowly got worse. It's inoperable I am told so I have to put up with the pain and disability. Look after yourself and Claudia. In one of your videos you and Claudia were talking about getting old together and how your relationship will be. I have been with my girl for 33 years and it's not been easy but if you genuinely love each other like you do now then it will continue to get better as time goes on. I still love my partner and she loves me and we have come through a permanent rollercoaster of life. We were only together 15 months together when I became ill and disabled for life. She stuck by me and I can honestly say she is the best thing to ever happen to me. So weather the ups and downs life will throw at you together and you have got it sorted. Wishing you happy new home and just carry on loving each other and compromise is the key. I love you both!! xxxxxxx💕👗

Jessica, Thank you for bringing history alive for us. I have always loved studying history. Although it has been a struggle to find information not written by those who pretend that that other historical figures who are not straight, white and predominantly male are less than and not worth their time to chronicle. It is so refreshing to learn about all of the historical figures that you showcase. Sending hugs to you. Tricia B 🤗🤗🤗😃

Very educational video! Will be sharing with friends. I feel the need to share something funny that's happened to me. Last night I (thought I) was binge watching Jessica's videos, then i fell asleep. So when i woke up this morning, I came back to this channel to rewatch some of the videos, but i couldn't find any that I had watched. Turns out, I had been sleeping and had dreamt up a substantial amount of content😂. It's a bit strange since i've not visited this channel for over two months i think.
