Since the racist Hays Code policies and the movie Gilda were mentioned: "Fun" Fact: The lead actress of that movie, 40s icon Rita Hayworth, was born of Half White, Half Hispanic descent; but Hollywood Executives literally made her get Cosmetic Surgery to change her facial features to make her look more white. Her famous red hair was also artificial, she was born a brunette, but they made her become a ginger to complete her transformation. While I know this is definitely a frustrating stereotype, I also want to point out that being promiscuous (in the sense of having many partners, not in the sense of being more likely to not be loyal to your partner) is also not a bad thing! All people should be able to explore their sexuality to the fullest, providing they do it safely, consensually and aren't hurting anyone or anything.

In Germany, at least, there seems to be an upside to being bi. It is believed to be connected to people who are artists, so much that people expect great artists to be bi. And if you come out as bi, people may very well understand it as proof that you are an "artist soul". It is seen as just "normal" enough to fit into heterosexual society, yet just that bit "exotic" to make you interesting.

Supposedly, the X-Men was written purposely to be an analog to homosexuality. Besides playing up universal tropes about being an outsider looking to "fit in", the whole parallel to coming out of the gay closet was intentional.

While I could definitely see that, I always thought the X-Men and a lot of Marvel heroes were coded to be Jewish, since Kirby and Lee were both Jewish and Magneto is even canonically Jewish. They could all be LGBTQ+ Jews, but I think the being Jewish is also part of it because to an anti-semite, you can't stop being a Jew and a lot of these characters and stories were written in the shadow of the Holocaust.

Can we also just talk about bi-erasure in cinema and pop-culture? Characters are often either straight or gay and unfortunately most movies featuring bisexual characters, particularly women, it's usually portrayed through a fetishizing male gaze where her sexuality isn't really valid but more just a personality trait to show that she is "wild". If anyone has good recommendations for bisexual characters and movies, please tell me!

Angela from Bones is canonically attracted to both men and women and has relationships with both (though for all the male partners she had, she only had one female partner, though there is an implication of another). Naturally she falls into the category of "characters who are clearly bisexual but don't like labels," and it's a really complex issue so I can't say for sure whether or not it's positive representation. She's depicted as being in touch and unashamedly open about her sexuality, but also so are pretty much all the other straight characters, including the female lead. She's also often shown to be afraid of commitment, and when she does settle down and get married, it's with a man. Overall, she's intelligent, independent, confident, and compassionate. Aside from Angela, Bones has a number of side characters who are confirmed to be gay. It's definitely not perfect, but it is something.

One of my favorite gay characters is Thomas from Downton Abbey. He started out as just the "gay villain" stereotype, but throughout the series we see different sides of him and he becomes more sympathetic. He and O'Brien brought out the worst in each other, and once she left I liked him much more. He's jaded and has a chip on his shoulder, but most people in his position would, too. By the end of the series, he was one of my favorite characters and I loved his friendship with George & Sybbie.

Thomas is legitimately one of the best fictional characters ever created, and his character arc was AMAZING!!! Actually, you’re right about most of these things, but skirts were actually worn by everyone. Bifurcated garments only came into existence near the Middle Ages, so everyone wore robes/skirts before because it wasted less fabric.
@Tubes12AX7k
@Tubes12AX7k Жыл бұрын
@@jimbo9188 And clothing-wise, the whole subject of what is 'men's' vs 'women's' really depends on what region of the world or era in history you are talking about. In the non-western world, there's a lot less differentiation in clothing. Some of that is due to the climate - in hotter countries, everyone wears looser, longer clothing, men and women wear sandals and clogs more often, and both men and women might wear very ornate clothing. Everything seems to be bifurcated in western cultures - even the way that buttons open on a jacket, left or right, or what colors are men's colors or girls' colors. It's almost expected that there is, will be, or should be bifurcation. But that's not the case around the world.

The thing about superheroes being a bad metaphor for being queer also resonates with the experiences of autistic people. The character who is 'different' who has something 'wrong' with them, until they learn to control their powers... maybe the thing that's 'wrong' with them is that they're gay or maybe autistic (or both). It's all just making out that the only way to be accepted if you're different (or not straight, cis, neurotypical, etc) is to be a superhero, you're not allowed to be just a normal character, you have to be that much extra to be accepted.

Lesbian Amazon Sister you are, scientifically, wrong. Neurologically, trans people are more similar to the gender with which they identify, than with their assigned gender at birth. In addition, on an anecdotal level, I’ve known two men who transitioned to being women, and both always felt female before their transition. The way they thought, the way they felt things, etc. Insisting that trans women are not women, makes you a TERF, and that’s an ugly look, sister.

@@jadesage2461 do you have any links to that study I am genuinely curious I had no idea brain structure was even different between males and females. If gender identity can be linked to brain structure I wonder if sexuality is as well and if so is it a genetic mutation and if so how far back in human genetics does it go I mean there are animals that prefer thier own gender so not sure that could be classified as a mutation since it obviously has not died out as being a negative mutation (in the sense that it lessons the likely hood of reproducing) but if sexuality is defined by brain structure differences it must be a integral part of all creatures genetic makeup so where did it come from. For that matter I wonder if these studies have looked into chickens brains as there are hens that crow and exhibit rooster behavior I wonder if it is caused by a difference in brain structure or is simply chimerism in them. Curse you for arousing my curiosity I am going to be googling stuff all night.

He started literally yelling at me basically insisting that older films only showed sweet virginal nonsense. I had to find multiple websites showing him the Hays Code and what content was in films before it went into effect. He finally said, "Oh, well I guess they don't show those kinds of movies on Turner Classic." Ya think?!

I don't like the idea of assuming a tomboy is a lesbian, because it implies that tomboys are all lesbians, and all lesbians have to be masculine or to some degree, butch. Well-meaning representation always seems to default to stereotypes, which doesn't seem like a positive to me. It creates a very narrow picture of what a gay man is, or what a lesbian is, when in reality, they are diverse in looks, beliefs and political views. I don't like characters being gay, for the sake of having a gay character, but at the same time, making a big deal out of a character being gay, isn't helping normalise gayness. I grew up watching Russell T. Davies' Doctor Who. Capt. Jack Harkness is masculine, heroic, a tad flamboyant and very flirtatious. He kisses the Doctor and it did not appear... Forced or weird. I don't remember questioning it. He even flirts with other species, and he doesn't feel like this creepy character. He is one of the best fictional characters to me. They acknowledge that Jack isn't straigh, but it never feels like a big deal. It is just accepted. Retroactively claiming a character was gay all along is stupid and adds nothing to the story. Unless their sexuality played a role in the plot, it doesn't matter. It feels like a cheap act to garner positive attention.

The thing about film from what I’m learning from my queer film studies class is that stereotypes help showcase LGBTQIA+ characters without explicitly saying they are such because of regulations from studios saying they can’t produce LGBTQIA+ content. It is unfortunate this had been the norm for many years. (See: Will Hays’ Production Code) They were meant to be exploited and demonized for decades so, directors and producers would circumvent that by not directly expressing that they were anything other than straight or just non-sexualized to pass under their studio’s radar. They had to keep silent about their sexuality and that stigma against LGBTQIA+ characters has held up until more recently with openly LGBTQIA+ people demanding and producing content that reflects their lives. I am happy more are coming out explicitly stating characters are part of the community because we’ve had to hide out in the open for so long that it was also expressed in movies and media. Now, we can be our true selves wherever with less demonizing and hatred from the general public. (Aside, of course, from countries where being gay is illegal)
@Dr3Mc3Ninja
@Dr3Mc3Ninja 4 жыл бұрын
Izzy Hale I don't necessarily mean characters that are directly presented as being gay, but characters who aren't shown to be definitively straight, and don't adhere to gender norms, and for that reason, the audience deems them as being definitely gay. I understand the desire to see someone on TV who is like you, but I hope people recognise that a character being gay, doesn't make them anymore or less important (assuming the plot is not centred around sexuality). Sexuality is such a small part of who you are, and you wouldn't let others define you by it, so why would you choose to define yourself by it. That said, being of a minority sexuality can also have a major impact on you as a person, particularly if you grew up ashamed of it and shamed for it. I can understand why it is such a big deal to many people. People are still killed for being gay, and raped for being lesbians. Hollywood has a lot of power to present gays and lesbians as ordinary people, who aren't out here to harm your children, but instead, they opt for lazy tokenism, which turns a lot of people off. They take a canonically straight, white male, and turn them into a black lesbian, as if that makes it a different story. Write/green-light new stories that were always about black lesbians, or bisexual Asians. They have the money for it, and people would be more receptive to it.
@Dr3Mc3Ninja
@Dr3Mc3Ninja 4 жыл бұрын
Alexa George Yeah, China makes up a large portion of Hollywood's audience, and they aren't too keen on gay characters. The game company, Blizzard, in America they claim that one of their game characters is a lesbian, but in China, nope, she is straight. This bothers me that these multi-million/billion dollar companies, who claim to be allies and supporters of the LGBT, will cater to countries and regions that discriminate LGBT people, because their profits are more important than human lives. Bethesda as well, they changed their icon to a rainbow version for Pride Month, but not in the countries where homosexuality is illegal. The support is so fake, and I hate it. I don't know why a large chunk of their audience supports this Rainbow logo every year, because support for LGBT people shouldn't be designated to a single month.

She may not have died, but her girlfriend did. Still fulfilled the trope. Also the “substitute magic for lesbianism” trope (though I actually thought it was done well). And Willow and Tara had the first onscreen lesbian kiss on a major network show. And I loved that Joss refused to make a big deal out of it. It wasn’t in the trailer, he refused to let the network sensationalise it in any way- it was a quick grounding sort of kiss in the middle of a terrible situation- and so low key that you might have missed that it was “the first” and supposed to be this big thing.

I introduced my 15 year old daughter to 'Fried Green Tomatoes' and had to tell her before that it was different than the book, and at the time showing the lesbian relationship the way it was shown was "groundbreaking". She's still pissed, and now points out how cinema can't show LGBTQ people realistically.

I would like to say progress has been made in television and film. But has it? Perhaps, in small steps. However, that particular industry has been in existence for over a century. Societal acceptance has progressed at a greater pace during the same time frame. We must get to the point where audiences no longer are shocked or have that "isn't that nice" reaction to LGBTQ+ characters. And said characters need to be presented and portrayed far more authentically than in the past. This simply can no longer be an outlier, or arthouse, or independent ... it must become the norm. Thank you for sharing your perspective, your knowledge, your thoughts on this important subject. Always enjoy and appreciate your work and being educated. Hope you continue to recover safely. Take care, Jessica! 👍🤟💝

Easier said than done. I don't know if you are into video games but the Last of us 2 came out the other day and so many people are giving it negative reviews because it features a lesbian couple kiss and and a trans woman. The gaming industry as a whole has a long way to go because people throw hissy fits and complain that games are "too political" when they feature LGBTQ+ individuals. What's amusing though is how they don't understand genre at all because people are mad that CD Project Red the developers of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 changed their profile picture on Twitter to a rainbow Version and have been threatening to cancel their pre-orders unless they change it back. It's behavior like this that solidifies by belief that the gaming industry will collapse by the end of the century. Honestly hate these people.

In my head canon Xena was always bi (I took whatever representation I could get) but I hated that some fans attributed the character's strength and skills solely to the lesbian factor. She was an independent woman with extensive medical knowledge and fighting skills and did not conform to dumb-ass gender stereotyping (it's the same bs that shames men for having emotions). Sorry for the rant. Any chance you could profile Hedy Lamarr?

Excellent run down. For y'all youngins who would like some expanded history, at least up until the mid 1990's *feels old* you need to watch the Celluloid Closet. It's THE visual documentary authority that covers everything Ms. Jessica discussed, but in greater detail, at least up until 1995, but the 90's were just 10 years ago, right?

@@PhoenixDove Luckily the beginning of cinema, and the Hayes Act, etc, won't change. But certainly the sequel to the Celluloid Closet would have a lot of ground to cover. But still relevant for early and mid 20th century history, it's a great "how we got here" primer, hopefully some of "the kids" will look up. If just one wee babe watches it I'll feel I've done my job. :)

Staff were all asked to write something about what diversity means to them as part of Schools Diversity Week and, surprise surprise, no one was talking about disability! Does anyone else feel like Loki from the marvel movies is queer-coded? The whole thing about him being “born different” and how that makes him bitter and villainous? And he was killed off multiple times... I like Loki as a character, he has a lot of depth and I find him more relatable than a lot of the protagonists.

Do they???? I didn't really think so?? Nomi andAmanita were a beautiful power couple Who lifted each other up and Lito and Hernando didn't seem to conform to Hollywood's gay stereotypes. I feel like it might have played into promiscuity tropes, seeing that people were hoeing around all over the place and having multiple orgies. I definitely enjoyed the diversity and the trans character was one of my favorites, but it was almost a little too much at times (and kinda felt like they just wanted an excuse to repeatedly make softcore porn)
