The first floor room request reminded me of something I did to myself. I typically book through a *very specific* third-party site. Only certain people can access that site. For people who work in hotels, you may know what site I am speaking of. Years ago, when I was using that site for *other* travel, I checked the box to request a high floor. When I traveled for that reason, we were often staying in kinda shady hotels, and the further up you are, the less chance of any issues. I was willing to haul my luggage up 2-3 flights of stairs (these were often motels without elevators) for safety's sake. I never unchecked the "high floor" box when I moved to largely using it for leisure travel. So, one morning, I'm on the 14th floor of the hotel when the fire alarm goes off. I find some shoes (relax, I was in the hotel slippers...not barefoot on the hotel carpet, but not something you want to walk 13 flights of stairs in!), find the stairwell, and start to make my way down. I got to like the 5th floor when the alarm shut off and staff entered the stairwell saying that it was a false alarm and we could return to our rooms. They came through and opened the doors so that we could use the elevators rather than trudge back up the stairs, and stuck around to help manage elevator capacity. I was standing in the elevator lobby rolling my eyes when a staff member asked me if there was a problem. "Oh, not with you. I'm rolling my eyes at myself for requesting a high floor. I really need to remove that from my profile!" "Oh, that is...up to your preference ma'am. We'll get you back upstairs ASAP." "Thanks," and back to scrolling on my phone. They were definitely expecting me to yell, LOL!

My husband and I are going on vacation this June and of course I told him to do it on the hotel's site. Of course, what did he do, he did it on a third party site and under his name alone!!! I was steamed. I told him, he should have let me do it and it would have been done right!😂😂😂

I (26f) got taught by my mum to never book third party if you're staying more than one night. She came back to London from Germany after being there a week (work trip), meaning she had lots of used laundry and a big case, plus laptop, then she would have a 6 hour train journey to get back to where we live*. She stayed at a hotel in London for a couple of days and booked - she thought - a room on the lowest floor, meaning she wouldn't have to take her huge amount of luggage a long distance. However, she booked third party and ended up with a room on the 4th floor (5th floor USA), meaning a lot of stairs with a very heavy case. *Before I get people about coming into London then doing a six hour train journey - we live out in the English countryside. The closest airport to us is approximately an hour and a half and does flights to other parts of Europe about once a week. It is easier and cheaper to get a flight to a London airport then take the direct 6 hour train right down to where we live. (Cornwall, for those who know it.)

It's been explained in a few comments on the shorts, but essentially the night auditor is the person who sets all the hotel systems to "the next day". They are often also the person assigning rooms to reservations, generating bills, tending to late-night guest requests (tends to be an overnight job so low but not zero guest traffic), and the like. Get on their good side, get best available rooms. Get on their bad side even indirectly, they get "creative".

The car story: guilty as charged, except we snuck our small MinPin (dog) into the room. My wife, our two teenagers, and myself were moving from DC to Dallas in mid-1998. It had been rather grueling finishing up packing and cleaning out the house up until the day we left; we weren't sure when we'd get off or how far we'd drive into upstate New York, so -- foolish, foolish me -- I had made no reservations for that night, though I did have them for the rest of our 4-day historical sightseeing itinerary. After all, there should be plenty of rooms available, no? No. Turns out that very weekend there was some kind of backcountry road rally going on in upstate NY and hotels were sold out everywhere. Keep in mind that this was largely pre-internet, so we had to just drive around and ask. After several stops, we did find one hotel that had a single room for the four of us. But it did not take pets. Luckily, the room was ground floor and had access that bypassed the main lobby. So we snuck Deacon in. He was very well behaved, and we drove in to Niagara Falls the next day. 😂
