Do you have any recommendations of styles from the 80's (from Coach) that have amazing leather? I am have little experience in Coach bags and am just learning from google and KZbin :) Hope you enjoy my findings today :)

As someone who owns Hermes, Loewe and other high end lux brands and also vintage Coach I can attest to the quality. 70s-early 90s Coach leather (look up legacy leather) is very comparable to Hermes leathers. I have worked in luxury for almost 30 yrs and as much as I love my Hermes items, Hermes is not necessarily always the best. Also you have to keep in mind if it’s preloved how did the previous owner care for it? I’ve had lots of poor condition Hermes items come through over the years because someone neglected it. Same with vintage Coach, if properly cared for you will find it on par with Hermes. Look at a vintage Willis bag. Also the one you have you can get redyed by a cobbler, it’s usually very reasonable to get a recolor done.

I worked at a luxury department store during the late 80s, we carried COACH, I had never heard of it! But it was the best seller in the department, to me the bags were rustic and simple at the time, colors mostly brown and tan, also some red and olive, it was really a cult following, also Europeans bought, I learned that COACH was designed by Bonnie Cashin a very influential American designer, I would research vintage Coach by Bonnie Cashin , not the recent ones that have been issued

There is a massive community of people who collect and are obsessed by the Bonnie Cashin Legacy bags by Coach. I have had a couple of these bags and one of the things a lot of these collectors do is wash the bags, like literally fill a sink full of soapy water and wash them, inside and out. I was terrified to do this but did it and it worked. Just one of the quirky things about vintage Legacy Coach bags.

90s coach bags are phenomenal, IMO. I love the Madison collection that was made in Italy, though you do have to to be selective because they don’t recover from damage the way the Glove Tanned Leather does. There’s a KZbin channel called Birdie Bloom where she shows a ton of vintage Coach models

I watched a Vlog from Tanner Leatherstein about a month ago on Coach bags. He took apart a Coach bag to test the quality of the leather. While the leather was pretty good, it was not the same calibre as the leather used in some luxury brands. What he did say however, is that the hardware is some of the best he’s ever seen. I found that video really interesting and informative. 💼

I have several vintage coach bags. The quality of the finishes (including rolled leather edges compared to glazing) is really good. They sit right next to my high end designer bags on a shelf and really hold their own. Specifically for styles, I like my Manor Satchel (style 9977) because it looks quite classy and I can add a scarf etc to its handle to jazz it up a little. I also really like my Plaza Bag (style 9860) because it’s spacious without being giant. Both are from the 90s and are in almost perfect condition. That leather just ages so well! My mom has a bag from the 70s that still looks great from Coach.

Hi Jessie, I own both Coach and Hermès, as well as Chanel and Louis Vuitton. When I bought my first Louis Vuitton, it cost $365. My first Coach, bought in 1997, was $200. There wasn’t an enormous price gap as there is today. Older Coach bags, even from the late ‘90’s, were solid leather. I don’t know the line that you have, but Coach leather was known for superior quality. In fact, car interiors were made from Coach leather. You have a 26 year old bag that’s probably not made of as high quality leather as the Hermès leather, but it’s held up quite well if it truly has been worn and enjoyed and not pampered. That in itself is a mark of quality. The closest leather I have found to Hermès leather is on the Longchamp Roseau Essential line. It is actually made of Taurillion leather and feels very similar to Hermès.

Makes you think the price differential between Coach and LV is basically a difference in marketing strategy not quality! I see the latest Coach range released in USA includes some exotic leathers such as python (exotics are not new for Coach, I’ve previously seen crocodile). They’re asking $1200 (USD) for a Rouge size 20, and $2800 for another style in python 🐍

What she was talking about when comparing with Hermès are the bags from the 70s and 80s, when the leather was more thick, in the 90 the bags started to be more malleable so the leather started to be thinner 😊 Yes your bag it's real and it was made in May of 97 not April for the Fall Collection and Periwinkle was one of the colours, no lilacs nor purples tho. By the way that bag it's a Belted Pouch 😊

If you are comparing Hermes Pebbled leather to Coach lightweight full grain leather, that is not a fair comparison as that was purposely made thinner that normal vintage coach leather. It’s hardware is also made lighter than normal. It is from the Vintage coach Soho line. There are so many vintage coach leather types. Vintage coach pebbled leather is made in the Sonoma line that is thick, full grain cowhide pebbled leather that is lined with navy striped fabric. Sonoma line also has Vintage coach nubuck leather that is also full grained and same fabric lined. Vintage coach caviar type leather is the Italian made Madison line that is lined with brown fabric. Normal vintage coach smooth leather bags are unlined bags, made with really thick, full grained cowhide that has so many nuances. They were made in lots of different countries like USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Italy, Turkey and China and colours all of which can feel different. If you get a really old bag like 70’s or earlier back to 1941, they were made in New York City itself, but tend to be stiffer leather (really thick). Lighter colours do not hold up as well as the medium to darker colours as they were finished slightly differently so wear more easily. I personally love the Costa Rican vintage coach smooth leather as it is buttery soft to the touch. Another quirk to vintage coach bags, especially the unlined ones, can be rehabbed easily by dunking and using leather conditioner like Leather CPR, Blackrocks or Renapur and buffing. Areas where colour faded or rubbed over time and use can come back in this rehab process due to their vegetable tanned minimal finished leather. Normal vintage coach hardware is solid brass or nickel that is heavy and can be rehabbed to look new again using Brasso or Sunshine cloths. It makes it fun (and addictive) to buy old vintage coach bags and bring them back to like new condition.

I'm in my 50s and the first handbag I purchased was a Coach Swinger for 110 dollars back in 1986. Fast forward, I still have the handbag, and it looks just as good as when I bought it as a teenager. Now, it will be an heirloom for my granddaughter. The best ones are the ones made in New York City or the US. Please note, that COACH was a major US brand and very much in demand. Back in the 80s dupes, fakes knocks off, etc. started to appear in the marketplace, so be careful when purchasing vintage ones.

70’s and 80’s Coach is AMAZING. The British tan bags are divine. I’m selling almost all my designer bags. I ultimately want 3-5 only, and then just own contemporary or cool, weird little vintage finds. I want a vintage Chanel. 80’s or 90’s. New Hermes city bag and an Evelyn’e. An original style Loewe puzzle - and I’m keeping my Chloe mini Marcie, my Givenchy and my vintage LV, then moving forward I’ll only buy vintage Coach, plus new Tory Burch, The Bridge, Strathberry and other contemporary brands. I know myself, I like a LOT of bags. And I don’t want a LOT of extortionate bags. So basically contemporary will be the most of my collection.

I love vintage Coach! I’ve finally given my vintage Coach Berkeley to my daughter I bought it in the mid 90s and it’s fabulous. I bought it with my first paycheck as a big girl and I remember I bought it at Nordstrom and it cost me $265. It’s a giant brown suede duffle and it still looks fantastic even though it lived through my lots of nightclubs and concerts and my daughter through high school and college. It lived a life is what I’m trying to say and it still looks beautiful, it’s suede on the outside and smooth leather inside. I’ve stuck to buying mostly Coach for my collection. Vintage Coach Rogues are where it’s at for me. First gen rogues have the best leather and I love the outside sections that are lined with suede so you don’t scratch your sunglasses.

The difference is that people who have bought Coach bags historically have used them regularly and well! They weren't protected from the weather or the sun, they schlepped school supplies and baby bottles. Her speedy is new, and mine is vintage A quality. I truly care for all of my bags and store them properly. Her speedy was more on the thinner side in weight. Mine was much heavier. As for me, I've always done my research when it comes to leather good. I always chose full grain leather. Which is the highest quality of leather. Top grain comes in second for me, depending on the item I'm purchasing. What it all boils down to for me, I'm not attached to a name. I'd rather spend my money on quality. Great video. 😊

The bag is cute. Have you just thought about refurbishing it and re-dyeing up the leather? And polishing the hardware with some Brasso that might make a huge difference. I’ve been watching people we have bags where they’ll buy a cheap bag that has some condition errors and then fix it up leather condition. It sometimes we die. It wash it, clean it and polish it, and it becomes a whole new bag.

That's a lightweight coach bag, not made in the original coach leather from the 70s and 80s. I've been buying coach since I was in high school- 1984 (and still have and use those). The lightweight soho belted pouch you have (which I also own) is a different form of the original coach leather which waa introduced in 1987 bc some people thought the original bags were too heavy. All early coach hardware was brass (they added nickel in the 90s) as is the hardware on retail bags today. The majority of my bags are Coach- I own over 100 from the 1980s to today if you have more questions. I suggest a classic collection bag for you to really see and feel the original leather...

When you made your "why I won't buy Coach" video and that you preferred to stick with Hermes, I said to myself oh you haven't felt Coach leather from the 80s and 90s! So today you pop up with a coach bag and I had to comment! The leather back in the day was always smooth, thick, heavy yet buttery soft. The leather was damn near indestructible and It was THE everyday "it bag" to carry for $200 or less. My mom has some late 80s Coach bags and just the weight of an empty everyday Coach bag from the late 80s is unbelievable. I have a legacy small flap in mahogany with brass hardware that was purchased my high school year 1996/1997. I have a companion flap in white with nickel hardware purchased in 1998 or 1999. Those are the last two Coach bags that I have left and the leather is in great shape 27 years later! Another thing is my 90s bags are even lighter than my mom's 80s bags. I would suspect that coach bags up to the 1970s were probably made with the heaviest and thickest leather, because as each decade came and went, the leathers got thinner and lighter. When coach introduced the nickel hardware leather bags, the leather got thinner and lighter. After that, coach switched over to fabric and coated canvas styles and that's when they lost me as a customer. I felt like it wasn't the Coach I had grown up knowing and that they had cheapened their brand. So just know that coach bags from the very late 90s to the very early 00s isn't going to be the best Coach leather that coach used in the 70s, 80s and mid 90s.

Just wondering….. do you think there’s something out there with better or just as good quality as Hermes? At times I feel like people go for Hermes because they haven’t been exposed to other brands. I wanted to get your thoughts. For example, Aspery of London is a brand that not many people talk about and is less expensive than Hermes. They seem to make extremely high quality bags but just don’t have the marketing engine behind them or this could be intentional.

The price discrepancy for the leather quality is definitely not what we’re paying for when we buy the top luxury brands. I like to think about how much I enjoy using a bag. It’s not that I cannot own a bag that I don’t enjoy using, it just means that I own it for other reasons. For example, eye candy for myself.❤

Who would compare a Coach to Hermes. Coach makes some beautiful bags. The Coach bag you have is a beautiful bag. You always sound like Hermes is the only brand for you so you should stick with Hermes.

I have vintage coach and Hermes. Compares!

I don't really understand the point of this comparison... We wouldn't compare a Honda civic to a Porsche, so why does Coach (whether vintage or new) have to be as good quality as Hermes? It's simply not a reasonable expectation. It's more reasonable to do a comparison of Chanel quality with Hermes, because Chanel is trying to put their prices in the same range.

I preferred the costa rica and made in u s over the italian bridge personally. Although and the madison collections from italy are very beautiful in their own way, I just really, I don't really like the u.S and costa rican bags. Eighties and nineties

pro tip: you can always re-dye vintage leather bags and they will look brand new.

Jesse, If you are even remotely considering selling any of your Hermes and getting your money back, you may want to do it now. The economy is expected to crash in 2024 and it will take a long time to build back. It’s not even going to be a recession, it’s expected to be a depression.

Hermes in my opinion is not worth the price they charge at all..
