@@ronnieyoung2075 You need an ear adjustment. There is no comparison. Judy was working with way better music and instrumentation for one thing and Whitney, who I liked very much, did not have the same degree of emotional delicacy balanced against power that Judy had. +Mark Innocenzi I just watched it again and for me it always comes down to a couple of things. First, after she motions the trombone player over, we're watching a 4+ minute unbroken take. She's got to carry this scene by herself with no help from any editing tricks. Second, I'm always impressed by the sheer physicality of that performance. Notice how she starts out anchored to the piano. And then she starts to wander among the musicians--but on the first crescendo of the song she's back at the piano. In the meantime she's incredibly expressive with how she's using her hands and arms; great sweeping gestures, etc. And then when the song winds down and she's going to end up sitting down, notice how her hands are in a prayerful position. Its just absolutely magic.

I just about fell over when I first saw the fully restored version of this movie before the studio hacked it to pieces. I believe it effectively cost her a well deserved Academy Award. She was only 32 during this filming. With that though came her deeper woman’s voice. Which I love especially in that little show stopper, The Man That Got Away. It’s perhaps one of my all time favorites, and out of her catalogue of songs, my absolute favorite of HERS! Man she knocked me off my feet with that number. I’ll never forget her! This is a true legend.

How was it seeing the fully restored version? I always wanted to see it.

@@taylordowning2533 It’s well worth getting the Blu-Ray of A Star is Born to see it.

@@taylordowning2533 But I think some of the film was actually trashed, so there is no way to truly put the original back together. The "restoration" I saw had still photos to fill gaps where they had some audio, but the film visuals had been tossed in the trash. What a waste!

"Take it, honey." I love the bits of business that go into this marvelous scene: pianist Tom Noonan's cue for Judy to take it and awe; Judy vocalizing from the sheet music before launching into what may be the greatest 3-minute single-take performance of a torch song ever done. Judy was, in fact, born all over again right here.

In 1954 when this film came out around the Holidays there were lines around the block of the downtown Chicago to see JUDY GARLAND's comeback film "A Star Is Born". And this song "The Man That Got Away" got applause even thou it was on film. Judy Garland' was America's most beloved star at the time. Could I put this any better? Judy was simply the greatest.

I can’t understand why anyone would want to remake this movie (and twice now??!!) when this version was perfect in every way. Judy was one of the Wonders of the World! Divine lady!!
@danielyoung51373 жыл бұрын
Actually this movie is the second remake of “what price Hollywood” and a remake of the ‘Thirties version with Janet Gaynor. It was already an old warhorse when Garland got to it. But the story has always been a solid-gold tearjerker and still holds up even when compared to the Streisand and Gaga versions.

This may be a remake but Judy Garland owns this movie. Anything pales after this because no one can match her raw talent.

Her voice is utterly electric and unbelievable here. This movie is a snapshot of her voice, matured from Wizard of Oz and Meet Me in St. Louis, and with all the power of her later years but before the vocal damage. Judy at her absolute peak - nothing like it before or since. She's inimitable and unbeatable. Wish she was alive today to know how much we adore her.
