Caution: This presentation is 1.5 hours and is for serious students of the historical Jesus--which I believe my KZbin subscribers are--in this age of TikTok, Shorts, YT videos that are never supposed to be longer than 12 minutes, it will find its rightful place. It is not for those wanting a "quick" surface take on things, but rather those who like long videos and a deep dive into important issues.
In this first episode of my new series called "Jesus Archaeology," I take an in-depth new and fresh look at Ten Jerusalem tombs from the time of Jesus and the "Tales Tombs Tell." This video contains new and breaking discoveries that make a huge contribution to historical Jesus studies--too often neglected or ignored by many contemporary scholars.

When you mention Hansens disease, I remembered that I worked for a year next to the Leprosy museum in Bergen, Norway, where -Armauer Hansen had his laboratory. I chanced to meet the daughter of the last director of the place when it still was a hospital for the leprous, she was now in her eighties, and she told me how the lepruous would sit out in the yard and smoke tobacco in chalk pipes, when she was little. I guess penicillin is the reason the place could close down and become a museum. It is the place where the organism behind leprosy was first isolated.

Read the Bible for yourself. 1. Only 1 disciple was known as "The Beloved" and it's John. 2. When on the cross, JESUS in JOHN 19: 26-27: Saw his Mother and "the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His Mother, "Woman, behold your son !" Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your Mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. Mary spent the rest of her days with John. Then about Mary finding the tomb empty. He totally discounts the Resurrection !!!!! JOHN 20 beginning at verse 11, describes Mary meeting with 2 angels and then JESUS Himself. In verse 16, JESUS identified Himself. Verse 17, JESUS warned Mary not to cling to Him because He had yet to ascend to His Father. Many Biblical scholars believe that JESUS was so moved by Mary's tears and mourning, He just wanted to comfort her before continuing with His Ascension. Remember, even Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were confused by the tomb being empty. What about the Roman guards standing watch at the Tomb? The Jewish leadership knew the prophecy of the Messiah (though they never recognized JESUS). To keep people from asking, they paid the guards to say they got drunk, fell asleep and the Disciples must have taken the body. So PLEASE read your Bible carefully. Don't be led astray. May GOD bless

Great new series Dr. Tabor! I've just recently started following you thanks to your appearance on Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus podcast. I've just finished both your books "Paul and Jesus" and "The Jesus Dynasty" and am about to start on 'Paul's Ascent'. I'm intrigued by the points you raise in both books that I've read...a totally different view from my Southern Baptist upbringing. 😊 I'm looking forward to exploring your books and videos more, as well as checking out the sources you provide in footnotes. Thanks for your very detailed work.

You're bringing back memories of me debating on Facebook, here, Dr. Tabor. People were wanting peer-reviewed empirical evidence of things mentioned in the New Testament, and I was trying to post a link to the article about that very body that had tested positive for leprosy that I had learned about earlier, as evidence that leprosy really was a thing in 1st century C.E. Palestine as the NT suggests.

Another amazing lecture. I accept the statistical improbability of this tomb not to be the tomb of the family of Jesus, but what's the probability that one of the few thousand tombs that have been found is the family tomb of Jesus? A million Jews must have been born and buried in the first centuries, so finding the family tomb of Jesus must be like finding a unique historical artifact in one of the few buildings standing after a complete bomb raid of a city. It's like the Antikythera mechanism. Someone finds a corroded lump of unidentifiable scrap at the bottom of the sea and decides to investigate it, and it turns out to be one of the greatest treasures of all time. This improbability in itself indicates that wishful thinking is at play, so I can understand that professional archaeologists are skeptical. Personally I feel privileged to be alive at a time when I can be a witness to it all unraveling. You are a beacon of hope in a mad world, James.

Jesus family didn’t live in Jerusalem, and they were peasants. Only the aristocracy (i.e. the top 1% of society) had a “family tomb”. I don’t know anyone who has a family tomb nowadays! In fact I asked the Undertakers about a space in my parents grave, the answer was “sorry it’s full”.
@mcosu1

Great comment, but I thought his argument is that it is statistically improbable that Talpiot is NOT Jesus's family tomb. I disagree with him and think he went out on a limb, of course.

@@spankflaps1365 If a simple man becomes the founder of a new religion his followers are likely to arrange a stately burial for him. I suppose I can answer my own question and say that time tears down all buildings except the most well built ones, and valuable artifacts are statistically much more likely to be stored in one of those.

That Passover was not the day before a weekly Sabbath day. The feast of Unleavened Bread is a 'proclaimed' or 'high' Sabbath on the 15th after Passover of the 14th. John's gospel also notes the discrepancy of the Temple keeping the calendar in error when he refers to them as 'feasts of the Jews' (not of the LORD/YHUH), since Jesus and His disciples had kept the true Passover the night before, and the days actually start at dawn, not evening.

After having visited the location of the Talpiot Tomb with you in 2020 , I can honestly say that after looking at its alignment with Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, I truly feel that this tomb MUST BE the Jesus Family Tomb. There was such a “presence” with us there that day! Truly amazing!
@TheRealDyscyples
@TheRealDyscyples 9 ай бұрын
What presence? That is not the family tomb. Even Amos Kloner, who did the excavation, said that it isn’t the Jesus Family tomb. The Talpiot Tomb belonged to a wealthy Jewish family, of which the names on the inscription were common at the time.

Why ridicule someone who had a spiritual experience? It comes off as snobbish & mean-spirited. Who are you to dismiss someone else's experience? If they felt a presence there, maybe it was the spirit of the person whose tomb it was. Peace.
@crabbitwife5463
@crabbitwife5463 8 ай бұрын
@@nancylowe2692 It is not snobbishness. There is absolutely no evidence for these beliefs, none. I don't doubt the individual "felt" those things but feelings are not evidence. The world has went crazy the past 10 years with people believing the can have the own truth or have alternative facts. This is detrimental to well being and the good of society as a whole. Look at the visciousness of life in the US right now with the right wing evengelicals actively believing in lies and consipiracy theories. I firmly hold that anyone can believe anything they like as long as it doesn't negatively impact on others. Feel free to believe in spirits and ghosts and angels, etc, but belief is not a reliable pathway to truth, it can coincide with the truth sometimes but most times not. Peace and understanding to you.

In respect of your time, doesn't Dr.Bart Ehrman argue that the Romans specifically *didn't allow* people to be taken down off the crucifixes...*as a part of the punishment*? A Merry Christmas Eve, Dr. Tabor -- I'm re-watching this KZbin video to get my words- & Time-Marks correct: At 30:30--30:36, you said the tomb's rolling door stone was "rare"; how so? what percentage of tombs used a 'rolling stone' door vs. other sealing methods used in 1st C. CE Jerusalem ? Is it possible that the rolling door (i.e.; one easily opened- & reclosed -- vs. fitted 'blocking stone(s)' -- means that this particular 'tomb' was Intended for 'Short-Term Holding' of the steady stream of bodies being churned-out of the Roman execution site -- rather than a 'Decomposition Chamber" which should be sealed- and not reentered for a year or more..?

On the ossuary ‘Mariamnene e Mara’ I have read a) Mara was an Aramaic form of Marta, Lady (I.e. Martha) , b) Sometimes bones of close relatives were placed in the same ossuary. Therefore could this not be the ossuary of the sisters Mary and Martha of Bethany? If the tomb to donated later to the cause by Joseph of Aramathea or another wealthy supporter then it does not have to have only family members.

Omg, 😳 thank you so much for this video, it has been a significant impact on me, religious wise, as I'm concerned on a religion level, as I had been in the belief I was Christian, and in wanting to know more about the relevant information on my Bible, study I'd been looking into the Jewish Biblical Texts and their rabbi's, and found that they scoff at Christians in a way, showing the discussed they have, for not only Muslims, but Christians too, and I have been rocked by this, as you would think that they know more about this, than us non Jewish people, especially the Christians, who have the Torah, as part of our Bible, as actually it's the first half, of the Christians Bible, and then the second half of it is, the Jesus stuff, I don't know why its called the Old Testament, when it's actually called the Torah, it's no less relevant than the Jesus literature is, and it's just as off-putting to call the second half of the Christians Bible, the new testament, it would have been more specific to have called it, the yeshua testimony, so the Christians Bible, would be more specific to tth the readers to be calling it, the Torah and the yeshua testimony, and not call it the old testament and the new testament, and Bible should be called the Torah with yeshua testimony, if we stop calling the Jewish Torah the old testament, it might mean more to the Jewish people, that at last were not miss naming it, and if we stop calling the yeshua part of the Christians Bible, the new testament, and start calling it the yeshua testimony, then were no longer insulting the Jewish Biblical Texts, or the Jewish people, we say alot when we learn and in learning we improve and grow, growth is evolution, I myself had been particularly in confusion about this, as my religion views, as to weather to continue calling myself a Christian, as the Jewish people, avidly insist that they know that they are correct that yeshua, is not real and that yeshua is not the missiah, depending upon who of the Christians denominations you speak to on this, you will get varying sides on this, prispaterns ? Say that yeshua is three, the son and God, so do the Catholics. I have a very hard time with this, and the Jewish rabbi's say that you are responsible for your sins, and that no one can pay for your sin's, especially not by a blood sacrifice offering. But, this is confusing as the Jewish people want to rebuild the Jewish temple again, and then start up the animal sacrifice stuff, as part of their sin cleaning practices, when you try to find out what the Jewish rabbi's have to say, as to what you hear from the Christians priests, the difference between them is huge, hugely apparent, the Jewish people say that the Messiah hasn't come yet, and the Christians Bible tries to make the claim that Jesus is the Messiah, and I know about in the Torah it's showing the Jewish people, begging God to save them, and they want God to come here, they plead to God for this to happen, and the Jewish people call us Christians pagan religion, so in this fact base Stuff that you do is very helpful and informative, but, I still want to know is, what is Jesus, missiah??? Profit ??? God ???

Lisa, you questioned that for its readers sake, as to why the first half of the Christian Bible is called the Old Testament, when it's actually called the Torah, and is no less relevant than the Jesus literature is, or why the second half of the Christians Bible called the New Testament and would have been more specific had it been called it, the 'Yeshua Testimony'? My response is that it would not have altered the prophetic will of God, had the original Bible not been called the Old Testament BUT the Tanach, and the New Testament called the Testimony of Yeshua, nor fulfill Isaiah 8:16-20 and bring more understanding to both, the house of Judah and house of Ephraim/Israel? Some 2354 years before the "Bible" was printed, in Isaiah 8:13-15 it reads as though the LORD of hosts was for a holy abode to both houses, He (his word) would have remained "a stone of stumbling and a rock to stumble over, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem". That is being fulfilled in Gaza and the land of Israel today! Among them, many are stumbling, falling and broken being taken and captured, it is they who must "bind up the testimony of Yeshua and seal the law (Torah/Tanach) amongst themselves" and WAIT upon the LORD, Habakkuk 2:3. Please pray for the peace of Jerusalem, Time Counselor

The implications of the East Talpiot tomb (if you rule out random chance, of modern or ancient forgery) would be mind boggling, as they would be - Mark is the son of Jesus or the advocate of the son of Jesus - who wishes to paint Jesus as satan crucified - with Jesus being in a power struggle with John the Baptist - because he married into the herodian stock - which resulted in the split from his brothers - who then attempted to betray and kill him. The difference being that Mark does not use Jesus as an allegory of the post _resurrection_ church in all its divisions and struggles, but as a real herodian counter messiah. Ancient forgery as far back as 200 AD based on synopsis would still seem more likely. It is undetectable by modern chemical analysis. The knowledge about an early date for Hanson's desease is very valuable in the interpretation of Mark. Jesus stretched out his hand and the leprosy fell of emediately. Really grissly. In my interpretation Simon the leper is really Simon the deceased. Hence Mark only Mentions Jakob and Joses as the sons left to Mary. I still prefer the allegorical reading with or without ancient forgery. Not every forgery tends to follow Herodias to southern France.

I came to the conclusion that the Wise Men were from Parthia, and wondered why Parthians came to Bethlehem to see the king of the Jews, thereby saying Herod wasn't King of the Jews. I think that shows the story is anti-Roman. Maybe this means Jesus was from the Hasmoneans since the Parthians supported them.

The Mt of Olives is too far from Herod's palace. Jesus would be led out of a nearby gate from Herod's palace, where trial probably took place.

Why are ‘the family of Jesus’ a poor & and possibly ‘wanted’ group buried in Jerusalem and not in Galilee? I also struggle with the reference in the gospels around what was said & done without there being any witnesses when Jesus was brought before Pilate or the high priest…. Happy to be enlightened…. Throughly interesting lecture though….

Great video - I have only one objection: I wouldn't put too much weight on Jesus tomb being "new" - no man has been buried in it before. IMHO, that's a reference to the virginity of mary. Just like his shroud being new (Mk 15:46), Jesus riding a donkey that no man has ever sat on before. Or in one apocryphal gospel, where Jesus is born in a cave into which no ray of light has ever entered before.

...you further make clear that the 'shrouding' of the Hansen's Diseased body consisted of two (2) distinguishable pieces of cloth: 1. A 'face cloth' (comparable to the 'napkin' said to be seen in the 'Stash-Tomb', adjacent to.. 2. The full-body 'great shroud' (like the one attested to in the gospel C:V you quote -- which is bizarrely described as being "folded" -- as if J.H.C. Didn't have More-Important post-resurrection tasks to perform). Was the 'great shroud' you found simply/hastily 'doubled-back' over that body -- per the image "The Shroud of Turin", or was 'your' shroud wound more-complexedly *around the corpse* as if to keep the skeletal remains in roughly their 'relationships of life' as the soft tissue decayed ?

Conclusive? Nope. Compelling? Yep. Possible? Absolutely. The notion of a Nazarene family having a tomb in Jerusalem is, at the least, troubling. Tombs cost money, and Jesus & Joseph were tektons -- not priests, generals, or merchants. And yet, the grouping of names, the coincidences of time and place -- it just might be. We need to know more to reach a conclusion, or to disprove what is, at least, a compelling hypothesis, if not a working theory, and we certainly don't know enough to *disprove* Professor Tabor's contention.
