i saw the movie in 1974. i was 10 years old at the time. at the time, i thought it was a bit heretical. the older i got, the more i realized that it wasn't. the songs are what i would imagine jesus and his followers would feel. the original cast in the movie was perfect. i can't imagine anyone else singing the songs. the emotions in their voices is what sold it for me.

I first saw the movie when I was 12 yrs old and Ted Neeley's performance inspired me to get into muysical theater and made Jesus real to me. I always cry whenever I see or hear Ted Neeley perform this song and have never seen anyone play Jesus part better than him in all my years. I am now 61 and had the pleasure of meeting Ted Neeley in person last year!!!! Let me tell you he is the nicest genuine person you will ever meet. To look into those eyes and the energy he gave off was like meeting the messiah himself. He was gracious enough to sing with me part of the temple song while my daughter recorded us on her cell phone. What an honor!!! I'll never forget. God Bless Ted Neeley Always!!!

Actually it was his FIRST performance of his final tour which lasted almost 4 years (was supposed to be a year.). No one thought he could do it… but his voice only got stronger. The last performance of the Farwell tour in Boston has a bootleg out there… it’s INSANE how his voice was so much stronger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6aYq3uje7h6gs0si=HnfIoX5heFnX3DgL Check it out. Ted is great singer and fantastic actor, obviously. You should listen to his first version from 1973, when he was young, believe me. But, first man who sing this, man who imagine this, who invented this high note on "why" - was Ian Gillan. Amazing singer, one of the best. This was in 1970. I was just 14 yrs old when in school a teacher brought into class a record player and played the original stage production on vinyl. The whole class silent throughout. Ian Gillan [ Deep Purple ] was Jesus, on vocals. I still have the original vinyl album I bought later....Then along came the movie. Ted Neeley this time played Jesus. A brilliant movie very clever how it starts with a bus full of actors getting off the bus and changing into their costumes....Then the movie starts with the most incredible song by Judas "Heaven On Their Minds" Wow ! - A clever ending too as the actors get back onto the bus - but who's missing ? Superb movie guys....& the original record with Gillan is brilliant too.[ Remastered on cd ] - That performance on stage was extraordinary. Thankyou for showing it.

This was the first time he sang it since carl anderson passed, after having sung it at his funeral at his request. In a way, this performance looks not only like Jesus coming to terms with his death in the story; but Ted coming to terms with Carl accepting his own passing through ted's confrontation with god for him; almost like ted is begging him for an explanation why he had to go. What a moment. You can really feel the passion

The clip you watched was part of a longer documentary of putting together this production of JC Superstar which was about to go on tour in 2006. Ted Neeley (the singer) played the Jesus role in the movie version back in 1973 (33 years earlier) and in a number of stage productions after. What made this performance especially notable was it was after the death of Carl Anderson (who played the role of Judas in the movie with him and also in a number of stage performances after) and Ted refused to sing this in any rehearsals because he didn't want to do it without Carl. This performance on stage was his first time singing it again. He's not in his best voice here (you can find him singing it "better" in other clips more recent than this where he's older still) but he does put a lot of emotion in this one.

Even if you don't review it, you should listen to the whole album privately, the words and music are a masterpiece. Several different great singers. Ive seen this movie 100’s of times…since I was 10 when it came out. We grew up with the beautiful album. Have seen Ted Newley in JCS and several other times. P.S. The best onstage performers with the scream are metal bands. Check out Sebastian Bach in Skid Row I’ll Remember you

I will repeat what others have said. You need to hear the original by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple.

Growing up in the 70s there were so many great songs from musicals. Godspell, The Wiz, and one of my favorites Hair. You need to check out the video of the song Easy to Be Hard from the movie Hair.

Arguably one of the best movies/soundtracks ever - watch him in the original 1970 movie Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber, (a few times). The movie and all the numbers in the movie will blow your mind. He sounds EXACTLY the same 😥❤

Find the full length movie. Watch it. I am not a religious person, but I love the movie, and the soundtrack. First saw it on the big screen in '73, when the movie was first released.
