Jesus Dreaded The Cross: The Mark Series pt 61 (

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this passage of the Gospel of Mark records Jesus' most intense, emotional low point, full of agony, and absolute dread. Theological liberals will sometimes distort the agony of Christ in this passage while conservatives have sometimes minimized it. In fact, I would say that it has been radically minimized in history, to the point of us missing the main thrust of what is happening here. In addition to the horror and beauty of the moment where Jesus stands alone, the only faithful one, going to die for the world at great personal cost and pain, we have a lot of absolutely WONDERFUL theological insights from the Psalms, Jonah and parallels with the Garden of Eden that give me chills!

I felt the same way until I listened to an album on The Cruxifixction of Jesus by Fernando Ortega. It’s quite a beautiful album that expressed his pain through scripture and songs of lent. Listen to the album’s cover of Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, talk about the pain and guilt carried onto a tree. The song evokes the pain and punishment of man’s justice on the Son of God. While I fall I tend to have this song permeated in my head and the gracious love that flourished from the very act of dying is for sure the greatest gift of all.

My understanding of the Gospel is that our sin...not just individual acts, but our very nature...had to be punished. The only way that could happen was thru us as time and chance brought us to judgment, or thru a substitute who was themselves without sin of any kind, who willingly sacrificed themselves in our place. He had to be perfect in every way, including a father who was without sin (hence the virgin birth brought on by the Holy Spirit). Like the lambs offered back in the day, he had to be willing, spotless and submissive. Hence, Jesus was not a martyr, but a willing substitute, and so perfect in every way, that he could take on all the world's sin, not just mine. The sad part is people can look at him and what he did on their behalf, and still think what they do is enough to fix their problem with God. One second on the other side of dying is going to be a tough time for a lot of people.

I watch a lot of strongman competitions, and when these men are straining to deadlift 455+ kg (1000+ lbs), it is not uncommon for them to get blood noses from the sheer stress of the lift ... but what is really interesting, is that a few years ago, when Hafthor Bjornson was trying to lift to 500kg (1100lbs) the strain was so great that he actually ruptured blood vessels in his forehead and blood began to run down his face. When I read of Christ sweating blood, this is what I imagine, only to an even greater degree. He wasn't just trying to lift a few hundred kilos, He was carrying the sins of the whole world.

Yeah. My life has sucked (chronic illness, autism and all its challenges, abuse, abandonment), and it took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that Jesus experienced a pain greater than mine, and he knows what it’s like to know your life will culminate in suffering. It’s freeing when no one in your life can relate to the degree of the physical, emotional, mental, and sometimes even spiritual anguish you go through.

Jesus taught us to see life differently than that with the parable of the prodigal son.

But I think we need to recognize that our sin is more than just an unfortunate accident; It’s what put Jesus on the cross. And if we can truly realize the depths to which we’ve fallen, we can truly realize the great mercy and grace God has for us when he pulled us from the depths. In order to get the full scope of God’s grace, we need to recognize our sin as an affront to God. We also need to recognize that he’s completely washed us clean and made us truly innocent.

When I think of grief in the garden I also imagine the grief and sadness of the Father. Imagine your Son crying out to you to spare Him terrible anguish and you just have to say "I'm sorry, no". Jesus Christ knew excatly what was to come. His moment of "weakness" is for me one of powerfulest moment in the Holy Scripture, then in His weakness He was the most Loving, the Purest, the most Loyal, the Greatest, the Biggest, the Kindest, the most Gentle, the most Spotless, the Humblest, the most Courageous, the Strongest, the most Serving, and so much more, a Son of Men could ever be. The end of that Palm is also beautiful, describing why he was willing to suffer the crises even though he despised the shame. Psalm 22:27-31 (NASB): 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations will worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship, All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep his soul alive. 30 Posterity will serve Him; It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation. 31 They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it.

Amazing to think that Jesus was sweating drops of blood because of a real medical reaction; His fight or flight response. He felt the desire to flee but, He didn’t. And, He did not fight it either. When Judas had to signal to the ones who would arrest Jesus by kissing him, it just goes to show at least to me that Jesus looked really ordinary, like the other disciples would’ve looked. This for me reinforces what Isaiah wrote about the Messiah about looking ordinary: “He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. This is why when Peter said he would Die with Jesus he meant it...and he absolutely would have. In Peter's mind that meant fighting to the death hence even though they would not have been able to defeat the guard Peter cuts the ear off....BUT when he soon learned that Jesus meant laying down his life without fighting Peter was like I'm out.

I believe Peter was going for a head shot but hesitated and got the ear instead.. a missed shot. Good thing, the guy survived. Plus maybe because he was named is telling us that Jesus' healing him was what made him turn to Christ. So maybe while the rest fled or walked away he stayed contemplating our Lord and His mercy, hearing Him speak of "this is the hour of darkness" and about "how will the Scriptures be fulfilled saying that it must be so?" We don't really know, it's just my theory.

I'm simultaneously trying to quit smoking weed for God's sake while also studying Christ's sacrifice and the deep suffering He went through. The crucifixion always makes me cry but I have never studied it like this. I have never truly internalized the details of Yeshua's suffering. Withdrawal just makes it more painful to hear. If I hurt this bad just from hearing about it...I can't even imagine His pain and suffering. He reassures me in prayer that it was worth it, that I don't need to feel guilt, but inspiration to take on that same struggle of suffering for God's sake. But jeez...this is all just so hard to hear. I can't wait to give Jesus the biggest hug I've ever given anyone when I finally get to see Him. :(

The first time I understood the agony of Christ in the garden was when I read The Murder of Jesus by John MacArthur back in 2002. That book opened my eyes to a lot of things and the whole ordeal Jesus experienced from garden to cross was excruciating; emotionally, spiritually and physically. He did it for us..amazing.

I used to write my thoughts and prayers in the beginning of my relationship with God. I realized I could be more honest as I pondered what to write. I am convinced that God wants us to be TOTALLY honest with Him instead of just praying what we think He wants to hear. He wants us to pray from the heart. Even when we know our heart is not right. When we confess our heart honestly, He "is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us." God wants REAL people who are honest with themselves and with Him. If we lie to ourselves, we lie to God.

Your grief feels so strong it feels it could cause you to die. Your selfishness in judgement or desire for revenge or your grief and suffering in sorrows in love is so strong it causes you to feel and desire death. It’s not strange at all to those who have felt both of these human emotions. It shows the humanity of both Jonah and Jesus despite the knowledge and relationship with God. The prophet of God can be humanly selfish. The savior can be humanly sacrificial. A perfect example that knowledge (intellectual understanding) and your spiritual relationship with God does not always trump human emotions in those who are fully living out their humanity. @1:13:00 when you talk about the crown of thorns representing Christ taking back the Curse of sin, that is beautiful. I’ve also heard it was likely his crown of thorns came from the acacia tree, which is the same tree that the ark of the covenant was built out of. This the crown of thorns thus also representing the new covenant realized through Christ the messiah. This was my favourite Mark series study so far!!! This has to be the most heartbreaking episode I’ve watched of yours. i have for a long time now added the words 'not my will but yours' to most of my prayers... one time several years ago i was in a prayerful mood and i said the lords prayer, rewording it in my own words in an effort to make it more meaningful to me, and not just a rote poem (which the lords prayer has kinda always been for me at least) in doing this it 'sank in' in a huge way for me! it was a really edifying... in rethinking each line it came to life, and the part about 'thy kingdom come, thy will be done' really sprang into life for me, and ever since i have tried to remember that what i want for myself might very well be selfish...

I have been reading/listening to/studying God's Word for 40 years. I have had more of the scripture opened up to me listening to Mike's teachings in the past couple of months than I have in those 40 years. Real, eye-opening, shine-the-light-on-it, revelations. I have a very concrete thinking brain and never thought about comparing Adam in Eden with Jesus in Gethsemane. Or relating events in the NT compared to the OT. Thank you, Mike, for being ready, willing, and able to share the pearls and wisdom God imparts to you with us. I can't get enough so please keep the teachings coming. I think The Passion of The Christ depicts Jesus being crucified and all that lead up to it pretty good you really get the turmoil and agony Jesus must have been feeling. It really does a job also of showing how when he was beat with the whips how close to death He was and still had to carry the Cross while in such agony. Everytime I watch that movie I have to have a towel because of the tears and literally crying like a baby just knowing what He went through for us and knowing how unworthy I am.

ok I hope I can help you guys, with the grief to the point of death part maybe someone already did, but in my brazilian culture, there is what we call death of grief, or disappointment. is usually a state where something happened that breaks your heart so deeply that you stop living, eating, talking, etc... until you die from that heart break. usually happens when there`s a huge disappointment that breaks the person`s heart, or a huge loss like partner etc... then soon after usually a week or 2 u die. cause u don`t eat or do anything. the grief literally kills u.

Hey Mike....i firmly believe this reference to his despair in the garden may have one other issue yet apart from the physical anguish he'd been predicting all along to the disciples...namely that Jesus knew that, at least for a moment while upon that cursed cross, he would know something (on our behalf/ in our place) which he had never known up to that point...namely, the very real & palpable sense of abandonment from his Father in the cry, "My God, my God! Why have you forsaken me?"

I just have to say I love pretty much every series you do, especially the Mark series. I really appreciate the time and dedication to being in the word before presenting it. You really help to shed light on several beautiful connections in scripture. So thank you for embracing Gods word and taking us along with you through these studies. May God’s will and blessings be worked in your life and those of anyone reading this. With you showing the Jonah passage it makes me view the "to death” part as a holding in one’s heart. So for Jonah "angry, even to death" hold anger in his heart until death. (You know when people justify their anger and say their going to hold a grudge and take it to the grave). Like holding a grudge until his death, as in his mind he has "good reason". However, with Jesus grieved "to the point of death" his grief will remain to the point of his death, as in the deep pain that he's feeling continues up through his last breath. It doesn’t seem like Jesus suddenly overcomes this grief that he enters from that moment until “it is finished” and he is by the Fathers side. Then when he is brought back to life 3 days later, he doesn’t have that grief he took with him “to death” because he has now defeated death and is forever living. He no longer has that grief. But like you said about the opposite contrasts. Jonah is suffering in his own anger out of hate he's holding onto, whereas Jesus is suffering others punishment out of love. Amos 2 I don’t know if I can agree that Amos 2 isn’t connected. This is my first time reading it, but I already see several parallels. Even Amos 2:3 “I will cut off the ruler from its midst, and will kill all its princes with him,” As far as I understand it Satan is the current ruler of earth essentially and God will be removing Satan from the earth sending him to Hell along with all those who would rather follow Satan than God. It goes on to speak about not revoking the punishment for these people because they rejected the law of the Lord despite the things God has done for them. Then it continues on to talk about prophets being commanded to not prophesy. A sort of subjugation and leading astray of groups of believers it seems in Amos 2:12. Then Amos 2:13-2:16 speaks of these who have rejected God, he says “I will press you down in your place, as a cart full of sheaves presses down.” The proceeds to tell how they will not be able to save themselves and that they will essentially lose all the things they’re grasping to in this life ‘the strong’ lose ‘his strength’, ‘flight’ from the ‘swift’. We’re talking inescapable judgement from God. This sounds very much like a parallel to the gospel to me at least. Man choosing to follow another “ruler” God cutting that ruler off and sending the followers with. Those who reject God and in fact turn to subjugating Gods word seem to be doing so boastfully. In the end comes Gods judgment, inescapable. Man is not able to save himself. Which is true, we cannot, which is what the gospel teaches. And They ultimately lose everything they’re valuing which seems to parallel being sent to Hell. “Stout of heart” sounds like a term for bravery, but even those who don’t fear God will fear God on the day of Judgement “shall flee away naked in that day”. This may be an over simplification, but to flee away naked seems to imply going without anything you had, no protection, not taking anything you own and maybe even naked in your own heart (heart bared), not just physical but being stripped of everything. I don’t think it implies that the naked man got away, fleeing simply implies the attempt right, and a few lines before it shows those fleeing and stating they will not save themselves. So to me it looks like on a first read through there are seemingly parallels that aren’t difficult to see. Granted I need to read around this more, just some initial thoughts I figured I’d share while watching. As far as connecting it back to that passage in Mark, the only way that would make sense to me is if we were seeing the reverse meaning play out in mark right. The man is leaving behind the only thing covering him, a linen sheet and escaped naked. Where the others ‘left Him and fled’, (by choice) taking with them all that they possessed and valued. The young man is described as following Him (Jesus) and they try to take him “subjugate” the young man to their will, but he pulls free of the only thing he has with him, the only thing he possessed in that moment, escapes their attempt to “subjugate” him and escapes, naked, so without anything, but he “escapes” he doesn’t “flee”. So, if we’re tying this back he’s not escaping because of anything he did, but unlike those who fled, his last connection written to Jesus is that he was “following Him” he never stopped following Jesus, he didn’t flee from Jesus’s side, he didn’t leave Jesus, he escaped the will / subjugation of the sinners. Also, I may be wrong, cause I’m a fresh, fresh, saved one, from January of this year, but if I understand it correctly, we’re all leaving here naked. We will not be taking things of this world with us, Heaven or Hell, we’re gonna be naked essentially before God, he will see us just us, not all the stuff we coat ourselves in. Even clothes, linen sheets are of this world and we are no longer over it. When we become new in Christ, when we’re born again, we are naked in a sense, the old has passed and we are now covered not by the linen sheet of this world, but we are covered in Christ and his blood that was shed, he clothes us now. We shed the shackles of this world our identity is in Christ. Just figured I give my initial perspective.

No one painting can convey all the facets of the Savior's attitude in prayer in the garden. There was both agony and serene surrender to doing the Fathers will, accepting that He would not avoid some of the brutality before the crucifixion, nor the have the sufferings on the cross alleviated. No one picture can show the whole spiritual reality.
