One thing I love about the Catholic church and being a Catholic is the way we don't joke with little details, no matter how insignificant it sounds.

Thanks Dr. Pitre! I have wondered about the conspicuous absence of St. Peter's wife for a while. Also, I wondered what became of this mother-in-law. We may never know, but was she among the women that also traveled with Jesus? Did she ever know the Blessed Virgin?

I would disagree with the comment that Peter was a widower because St. Paul mentions 1 Cor.9:5 as "Don’t we have the right to bring a believing wife with us as the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers do, and as Peter does?"
@tonyl376211 ай бұрын
The words for woman and wife were often interchangeable in ancient languages. Not as definitive perhaps as you might think. Though the early Church seemed to think Peter did have a wife.

It does appear that Peter is married after Jesus’ assumption (1Cor 9) when Paul asks why it’s okay for the other apostles, Jesus’ brothers and for Cephas to bring along their believing wives and to be able to refrain from working, which would imply that those apostles who were married took time off to be with their families. I suppose it could be argued that the Cephas mentioned in verse 5 is some other guy named Cephas, however Cephas is the name that Jesus gave Simon in John 1:42 and Paul does seem to alternate between Peter and Cephas when referring to Saint Peter, like He does in the letter to the Galatians. Why is this an issue?

My only correction would be is that Jesus ascended into Heaven. He was not assumed.

Why is it that the Revised NAB does not use “immediately” in those versus? Even the Douay-Rheims renders it as immediately.

It maybe true that the wife of simon is not mentioned here, but in other passage of scripture his wife is mentioned as accompanying him in his missionary journey as told to us by Paul in his letter to the Corinthians. Catholic Study Bible 1 Corinthians 9:5 5 Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife,* as the other apostles and the brethren * of the Lord and Cephas?

I love dr. Pitre and all his work but I think that he missed this fact that Paul clearly suggests that during the time of Paul's ministry Peter had a wife accompanying him.......... also if I remember correctly Eusebius mentions that Peter's wife was martyred

Was it the custom for a mother-in-law to live with her daughter's husband if she died? Would she go with her other children if she had any?
@tafazzi-on-discord2 жыл бұрын
I guess that being a fisherman Peter lived in the lower income social class of the region. In that context, opportunity is worth more than custom, even IF (I don't know if this is the case, just talking hypothethical) most of the times a mother would be the responsibility of her firstborn son, maybe Peter's brother in law couldn't accomodate another mouth to feed in his house.

For a different vision of this incident, you may want to have a view of Series 1, Episode 8 of "The Chosen," where the healing of Simon's MIL is treated as comic relief. "Does he like goat cheese?" "Yes, I love goat cheese." Clearly not taken from any Evangelist.

In other words, Jesus healed the apostle Peter's mother-in-law. So, clearly, Peter, who Catholics believe was the first pope, was a married man. The truth of the matter is that the Catholic Church took it upon itself to make it a Church law that prohibits unmarried priests from getting married, as the following Catholic references say... 1. “We do not find in the New Testament any indication of celibacy being made compulsory either upon the Apostles or those whom they ordained.”-The Catholic Encyclopedia 2. “The oldest evidence of a law on priestly celibacy is Canon 33 of the Council of Elvira [Spain], circa 300 C.E.”-Dictionnaire de Théologie Catholique 3. "Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence...and therefore are bound to celibacy..."---The Catholic Code of Canon Law states The Catholic Church has a bad habit of teaching things that are unscriptural.
