Jesus Is A Failed Apocalyptic Prophet | Paula Fredriksen PhD
MythVision made a special trip to Boston USA to interview Paula Fredriksen. I recorded 12 sessions with Dr. Fredriksen discussing her work in New Testament studies. Thanks to those who helped fund this trip via GoFundMe I was able to make history. Their names are at the outro of every video with Paula.
Paula Fredriksen, the Aurelio Professor of Scripture emerita at Boston University, since 2009 has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she also holds two honorary doctorates in theology and religious studies. She has published widely on the social and intellectual history of ancient Christianity, and on pagan-Jewish-Christian relations in the Roman Empire. Author of Augustine on Romans (1982) and From Jesus to Christ (1988; 2000), her Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, won a 1999 National Jewish Book Award. More recently, she has explored the development of Christian anti-Judaism, and Augustine’s singular response to it, in Augustine and the Jews: A Christian Defense of Jews and Judaism (2010); and has investigated the shifting conceptions of God and of humanity in Sin: The Early History of an Idea (2012). Her latest study, Paul: The Pagans’ Apostle (2017), places Paul’s Jewish messianic message to gentiles within the wider world of ancient Mediterranean culture.

Have you thought resurrection of the dead is in fact reincarnation? Ancient Christian's did believe in reincarnation the first 500 years after Yeshua (Jesus) died? Xx
@cosymedia2257

I'm with " yichengyi " on this (nothing that is spiritual is material) the more people dive into the bible (= chosen by who really know who scriptures), the more it is confusing if not contredicting itself... Still when reading in between the lines (out of religious inculcation and dogmas) it certainely holds some truth (from inspiration or plagiarism even potentially from older civilisations that we may still don't know about for real yet). So to me, when it is said in John 1:1 that the Word was/is God it makes total sense to understand that their is a difference to make between God = the Energy of life / the material part of God AS EVERYTHING (alpha to omega) and God's Consciousness for what talks to him form within - just like ours (in his image)... Written as the Verb or the Word ... thinking is actually anyone's first action, it's also what makes one aware of being alive... Without consciousness = NOTHING (or CHAOS = nothing that stand - materially as well as spiritually). Also the verse 4 saying that he is life, clearly specified that it is not about existence but the light (= consciousness) that's when John 14:6 makes total sense when the Christ (Jesus being the Word's avatar not God) said : I'm the truth (the only thing that one can rely on to find the way - or we can only deal with a bogus map / illusions). So if God is everything (ENERGY of LIFE - we are a part of it) and that would eventually explain the bogus God of the OT (in the image of men in fact - far from perfection - not following his own 10 commands, asking for a materialistic cult (not spiritual), and only ask for obedience instead of conciousness - already denied in what is supposed to be the story of the first human beings (and this already can't be true) - like he (actually litteraly "they" as Gods) only want to deal with unconscious human beings - Why? Why would any father do that to their kids (moreover FOREVER). Also for instance in Luke 10:21 it is said that the light conveyed by Christ is shown to babies/children, knowing that kids can't read nor understand complexe things, still they surely acknowledge the truth for what it is (before any type inculcation, dogmas, lies get in the way = hijacking their consciousness = their capacity to SIMPLY see/feel the truth (= unleavened bread) because their heart/soul is still pure (as long as they have no reason to deny it consciously or uncounsiouly). So to me the Word is talking to us directly from within (if we really want to hear it) John 1:5... The Word of God is not a book - those are scriptures with no realiable origines that could have been and still can be forged even just in interpretation. Excuse my English I'm French...

I came of age during a time when it was frowned upon to discuss publicly any matters that were contradictory to people's "faith." Much of the scholarship Prof. Fredriksen brings up has been around for decades if not centuries, but bringing it before the public was a no-no. Belief for the sake of belief was a value that could not be challenged, whether its object was God, scripture, even Santa Claus and the tooth fairy, because "faith" was needed for the stability of society. I experienced this climate of opinion growing up in the 1940s and 1950s, and of course it goes back farther. Darwin was reluctant to publish "The Origin of Species" because his observations contradicted scripture, and he feared that if the lower classes learned of this, they would become less respectful of law and governmental authority. (It seems that his ego overcame his reluctance: he decided to publish when one Alfred Russel Wallace started noising about with a similar theory. Darwin didn't want to be scooped by this upstart!) So kudos to MythVision and Paula Fredriksen, and let's be grateful for the less inhibited exchange of ideas that has become possible today.
@jrutt2675
@jrutt2675 Жыл бұрын
Actually Darwin was right and wrong. If one ever learned the truth they would see the bible as a White Supremacist book. Many humans come from apes, many do not. If you look at different races you can see the Simian features in many races. Then there are other peoples who do not have them. The bible never said Adam was the first creature on earth, or first person. It says he was the first man. Liberals do not want this truth to ever get out. Unfortunately for them it will in the end.

I grew up in Christian Church being scared to death with the Rapture/ End-Time stuff. I remember watching Jack Van Impe back in the 80s, him being so sure Jesus was going to return by 2000. I went to a Bible study in March of 1992 as a high schooler, the elderly gentleman leading the group said that God told him the Rapture was going to happen in 1993. More recent years, Jack Van Impe said the end of the world was going to happen in 2012, then in 2017. Jim Bakker says we're going to here during the Tribulation and that the Rapture won't happen til afterwards. Hilton Sutton said there would be 3 Raptures. Seventh Day Adventists say part of the End-Time Tribulation already happened, and that anyone who worships on Sunday instead of Saturday is already guilty of taking the mark of the beast. They all contradict each other, yet they all are so sure they're hearing from the same God ......

Thank you Derek! You just keep getting better and better since your start with you and Luther as the "Waterboys" several years back. Your growth as both a highly skilled interviewer and as a scholar in your own right is absolutely spectacular! I adore Dr. Paula Fredriksen and have read all of her books in the path of writing my own scholarly book in progress along with a spin off Major Motion Picture Science Fiction Film Script. "Edward F. Edinger" meets "Philip K. Dick" meets "Carl Sagan" is always food for thought! My problem with the psychological resolution of totally counting out "Apocalyptic thinking" is my time in the U.S. Army from 1969-1971 during the suicidal Vietnam War. In one of my duty stations waiting on orders to kill or be killed in Southeast Asia with Stone Age weaponry, I was briefly in the Chain-of-Command of Nuclear Weapons in Europe. I came to the first hand conclusion that we are living in a World shaped by madmen, sociopaths, and lunatics if you study 3,000 years of "Archetypal World History". Right now 50 years later with the profound Archetypal reality of the Russian-Ukraine War with the latest cutting edge 5th generation implementation of MIRV Nuclear Weapons on the drawing boards and in the defense budgets of the World, I still very much entertain "Apocalyptic thinking". If you read the classic 1969 book "Hamlet's Mill: An Essay Investigating the Origins of Human Knowledge And Its Transmission Through Myth" by the late Professors Giorgio de Santillana of MIT and Hertha von Dechen of the University of Frankfurt and combine it with an analysis of the Persian Scripture the "Kitab-I-Iqan" written by Mirza Husayn Ali of Nur (Baha'u'llah) in 1861/1862, you will see perhaps a New cutting edge Jungian Allegorical interpretation of the entire concept of "Apocalypse". Walter Cruttenden would make an excellent guest to discuss the book "Hamlet's Mill" if he is still with us. I had a long talk with him in Pittsburgh back in 2006 just before his own book came out. A wonderful gentle man! You should also look into the Baha'i scholars Dr. Juan Cole PhD., Dr. Todd Lawson PhD., and Dr. Christopher Buck PhD. to eventually have on in due course to speak on Baha'i Scripture on a scholarly historical level. I am on your Patreon support channel and it is some of the best money I have ever spent! Even as late as 325 CE, the Nicene Creed proposes bodily resurrection, universal judgment and “the life of the ages to come” to be expected upon Jesus’ return. It should be noted that no mention is made, here, of either Heaven or Hell, nor, for that matter, of an Immortal Soul capable of tolerating either - these were later introductions after Jesus proved a “no-show” to kick off the expected credal scenario.

We don't know when Jesus is coming back, He made that VERY clear before He ascended into Heaven. Just because you interpret something wrong doesn't make what you just said about the misinterpretation correct. Jesus Christ is coming back and He is going to bring Judgement with fire and Judge all who don't put their Faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus died for all of your sins by laying His Life on the Cross because we have sinned. Yet we were still sinners. Are we Judged yet? No. The apocalypse will happen when Jesus returns. This apocalypse is Judgement with fire. I am telling you guys with abundant Love that you need to repent of your sins and put your trust in Jesus Christ Praise God from all Whom all Blessings flow! ❤

In the sixties, in a 100% Muslim country where there was no internet to circulate information, and where no one heard of Jesus, there was a little girl under the age of six, unwanted, starved and molested. When life became impossible, and she heard that taking too much medication could kill her, that's exactly what she tried to do. Sometime later, this heavenly figure came in a vision. He was being worshipped by a little white girl around her age who felt very loved by him. She described the vision to her relatives who told her it was Issa but no one affirmed it. She grew up to become an atheist and a social case... believing that this god didn't come for her. It was only when she was about 30 that she gathered the courage to investigate. Her life became an opportunity to study, learn, fight and grow. She learnt to live by faith in spite of the persisting darkness. I believe her story. I think Jesus came back already and that's why various people can see him within. So, his mission is far from failed.

Always a great discussion, good to get as many researched opinions as possible. It's been the end of times since the start of times. The years prior was all about war, plunder and ruling between brothers and trading there sisters off. If you won the war, your "religion" commenced. Kievan Rus like most other tribes, were pagan until forced to be baptized. South America, North America, Africa, Indo Europe, Ireland, etc were all converted, so the powers that be forced their ways in exchange for traded goods. Whoever won the war gets to write the history books.
@twelvestitches984
@twelvestitches984 Жыл бұрын
The problem with religious people throughout history is that you all think it's all about YOU. It's just not about you and it never will be. I was raised Jehovah's Witness and as a child I was told that any day now God would kill everyone who is not a JW and we would inherit Paradise Earth but it never happened. Then I read the bible and realized that is doesn't actually say that. People don't want to die so they need the apocalypse to happen in their lifetime. Matthew 5:5 - Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. It doesn't say that God will kill those you don't like, or anyone at all. It also doesn't say that it will happen in your lifetime. Eventually humans will evolve (maybe in one thousand years) so that there is no more war. Humans will become meek and gentle but God is not going to do it for you. Just because someone chose to include Paul's writings in the New Testament does not mean Paul's ideas are Christianity or universal policy. Thou shalt not worship Paul or place Paul's ideas equal with Jesus. The Book of Revelations was written by the Apostle John. Thou shalt not worship John or take John's ideas and place them equal with Jesus or call them Christianity. John did not make universal policy, no human does. The sleeping survivors, resurrection of the dead, were awakened when Jesus arose to heaven. "No one comes to the Father except through me." What this means is that Jesus controls the doorway to heaven. It's also somewhat literal because this universe is on Jesus timeline. Before Jesus completed His earth mission the people who died before that time went to sleep and could not ascend to heaven. You can't figure out the truth from just reading the bible because in the bible the chaff is still mixed with the wheat. You really have an extremely over inflated ego that is typical of primitive beings. You want what you want when you want it. God, Jesus, and the angels do not serve humans. The universe wants Job, not spoiled little brats who think they should have been given an easy life full of luxury.

When scholars begin with the premise that the documentation of a fulfilled prophecy must have been written after the fulfillment occurred, that is because modernist scholarship (like science) cannot consider the possibility of supernatural causation. That is outside of the parameters of scholarly discussion. So, an alternative narrative must be applied. What actually might have occurred is less important than maintaining the modernist paradigm.

If you take 70ad into account, Jesus was anything but a failed apocalyptic prophet. If Luke was written before 70ad, and considering acts doesn't record Paul's death, that seems possible, then Jesus was spot on concerning the end of the world for the Jews and the Jewish temple...As for thew kingdom of God. we are 2000yrs later and this so called Kingdom of god has thrived with Jesus as the King of that Kingdom, ruling over the kings of the earth. Looks like a fulfillment of the Messiah to me...The fact remains, 2000yrs of Jesus Kingdom of God has stood the test of time and still stands strong...I can't think of a single empire that has stood longer.

The speed at which you travel cannot possibly be done justice to in words. The "whoosing " rush of sound is scary really . and (& i believe everyone has had EX: of this when "falling " back into their body - returning from astral travel ) I also believe when jesus said "my fathers house has many mansions. " - THIS segment of the vid - is what he is loosely referring to Also , having seen apparitions appear multiple times ( couple of times with others as witness) (Credible sober witnesses i might add !) And many other types of "supernatural " events - inc clairvoyance , telepathy , etc , I did NOT come to faith in jesus by "indoctrination. " - i was actually. more drawn to occult practices because they were exciting and scary .....but only until i realized how TRUE that was in a very real way . I guess what i am trying to say - is My faith in jesus words of "beating death " and living in "heaven. " -spirit life and all manner of supernatural things described in the bible - suddenly did not sound ridiculous anymore. In a roundabout way - my disobedience to his doctrine actually facilitated my belief in his teachings I can only imagine if i had never experienced those things ...then maybe i would still be a scoffer - HOWEVER , i dont just belief that you have to experience anything otherworldly to be convinced of its existence. Jesus words in lots of these passages are simple - yet so profound (&beautiful) -that they can touch you enough to transform any mocking doubter . This is simply my way , the way i found toward the peace and fire of "the light of the world "

It’s not to say that we shouldn’t fear potential extinction events, but we need to realize that they are often driven by false positives that are so deeply ingrained in our evolutionary psychology. But he wasn't an apocalyptic preacher lol, last time I checked he was talking about how to connect to reality of God via inner experience. You should have looked at 100 years after his "death" and many mystical groups that were teaching his word. Real Jesus had been challenging religions of his time and I will a sure you that Jesus would challenge any Catholic religion today that became dead end on itself, including materialism respectfully. The sad thing about people "freeing" themselves from Christianity is that they throw away all spirituality and not willing to discover real Teachings of Jesus and convert to another religion of materialism and now they become so convinced that it has reality that they again shut themselves off from anything beyond this mental box - people literally swoppd one box for another. And how can I claim this? well your life still revolves around topic of God - So you haven't moved anywhere, you are dancing around the golden calf. You still have no idea what God is, you never experienced it you never known any Devine love you never encountered Jesus in spirit - you literally know nothing from personal experience on this issues all you known as Christian is ideas that lived in your mind and then there came a time to question them, and boom you realized there is no validity to believe them to be true. And you thrown shackles of Christianity but you have not answered or experienced God Reality... Now your mind is trapped by another set of ideas "Im highly evolved ape" "I die after body dies" "There is no spiritual reality" and list goes on.

@@danjensen8412 Sorry Dan. Jesus as a failed apocalyptic prophet is the general consensus of critical scholarship, even critical Christian scholars like Dale Allison. The Son of Man (Jesus himself?) was supposed to be an end of the world arbiter, as Bart Ehrman points out in his lecture referenced below, and as the Bible states he was supposed to come *within the lifetime* of Jesus’s followers. *It didn't happen.* Read the article from the former Christian apologist and Tim O'Neill (former Christian), who has been studying the scholarship and history for decades, referenced below as well. *Jesus falsely prophesied his return in the 1st century* For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; ***and then he shall reward every man according to his works.*** Truly I tell you, ***some who are standing here will not taste death*** before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom Matthew 16:27-28 Truly I tell you, ***some who are standing here*** will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God Luke 9:27 Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Mark 13:30 The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Matthew 24:29-34 There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. When you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, ***this generation will certainly not pass away*** until all these things have happened Luke 21:25-32 *Jesus promised to return over 2, 000 years ago and he still hasn’t.* Jesus and the angels never appeared from Heaven, the stars never fell from the sky, none of these things happened. Nothing he prophesied happened. ***Apologists can try to spin this, but the simple fact is that Jesus was either wrong or misquoted.*** According to the Bible that makes Jesus a false prophet or misquoted (and if Jesus is misquoted than the Bible is not inerrant or the word of God) How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord? If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken Deuteronomy 18:21-22 *Jesus falsely prophesied to the high priest and the Sanhedrin* Jesus also falsely prophesied to the high priest and the Sanhedrin (assemblies of either twenty-three or seventy-one rabbis appointed to sit as a tribunal) You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and ***coming on the clouds of heaven*** Matthew 26:64 Mark 14:62 Except the high priest and the Sanhedrin never saw Jesus sitting at the right hand side of God, or coming on the clouds of heaven, or any such thing. *Jesus falsely prophesied to Nathaniel* Jesus also falsely prophesied to Nathanael when he declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” Jesus said, You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that. He then added, ***“Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man*** John 1:50-51 *Nathanael never saw any such thing. Neither did anyone else.* The following quote from Stephen L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University- Sacramento, completes this point with a devastating argument. *Jesus did not accomplish what Israel’s prophets said the Messiah was commissioned to do:* He did not deliver the covenant people from their Gentile enemies, reassemble those scattered in the Diaspora, restore the Davidic kingdom, or establish universal peace (cf.Isa. 9:6-7; 11:7-12:16, etc.). Instead of freeing Jews from oppressors and thereby fulfilling God’s ancient promises-for land, nationhood, kingship, and blessing- *Jesus died a “shameful” death, defeated by the very political powers the Messiah was prophesied to overcome.* Indeed, the Hebrew prophets did not foresee that Israel’s savior would be executed as a common criminal by Gentiles, *making Jesus’ crucifixion a “stumbling block” to scripturally literate Jews.* (1 Cor.1:23) Watch *Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet, Historical Lecture - Bart D. Ehrman* ------------------------------------------------------------------ Also, look up the following. *"End Times - Evil Bible .com"* *"The End of All Things is At Hand - The Church Of Truth"* *"ex-apologist: On One of the Main Reasons Why I Think Christianity is False (Reposted)"* *"Jesus the Apocalyptic Prophet - History for Atheists"* (Tim O'Neill is a former Christian and is familiar with most of the Biblical scholarship. He's been studying the scholarship and history for decades) *"Jesus Predicted a First Century Return Which Did Not Occur - by Alex Beyman - Medium"* *"Jesus’ Failed Prophecy About His Return - Black Nonbelievers, Inc."*

@Dan Jensen For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; ***and then he shall reward every man according to his works.*** Truly I tell you, ***some who are standing here will not taste death*** before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom Matthew 16:27-28 *Pre-emptive answers to common objections:* 1. “No one knows the day or the hour” means that the date cannot be known precisely. *However, that does not stop Jesus from repeatedly giving a general timeframe of several decades within which to expect his second coming.* 2. It can’t be interpreted to mean you and I as metaphorical apostles because he specifically says *“some of you standing here”,* as in the people he was talking to at that time. *The full context reinforces that, he was speaking to disciples who accompanied him to Caesar Phillipi who wanted to know how they would recognize the second coming.* 3. *It can’t be interpreted as referring to the transfiguration because the events described in verse 27 don’t happen at the transfiguration (Jesus, God and angels coming from the clouds, judging mankind according to their deeds).* Besides this, the transfiguration only satisfies one of these predictions, only partially, and only on a technicality. The New Testament was compiled long after Jesus died, so there was ample opportunity to make late additions, and one might speculate this was done to hedge their bets. Otherwise it seems like a silly, cruel prank to say something which clearly implies a near term second coming when what he really meant is “I’m gonna briefly float and glow for 2 guys later”. 4. *Daniel’s visions do not, by themselves, satisfy the claim either because they don’t clearly depict the second coming.* Rather, they’re fever dreams depicting seven apocalyptic creatures (representing kingdoms that ruled over the Jews up to that point) with some seriously dubious interpretive stretches and symbology going on. If this is all Jesus meant when he said some alive at that time would witness his return, like the transfiguration, it seems wildly misleading, bordering on a cruel prank. 5. *The 666/616 gematria code known as the number of the Beast must mean Nero/Neron, because only that name fits both 666 (Nero) and 616 (Neron).* Source: www.math.harvard.edu/~elkies/mp666.html. *This is because the book of Revelations was intended to metaphorically describe the fall of Rome,* in a time when Christians could not openly predict it. 6. It’s true that some of the events Christ said must occur before his second coming have not yet occurred. However, submitting this as proof that Christ must have meant something else in the verses supplied above presupposes that he actually was clairvoyant, instead of simply being wrong about those predictions too, because he was a regular human being without the ability to see the future. 7. For those who say that no Christian tastes death but lives on forever, it is clear Christ meant bodily death by other verses wherein he tells his traveling companions which signs they may personally expect to witness as his second coming approaches. *They, according to Christ, should anticipate those signs within their lifetimes and would know by those signs that his second coming was imminent.* There are two deaths: bodily and spiritual. 8. *Jesus’ resurrection does not fit the criteria supplied by the verse because he did not, on that occasion, “come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and reward each person according to what they have done.”* By that description it’s clear he is referring to his second coming, as explored more thoroughly in Revelations. 9. “When Christ said some standing there would not taste death before witnessing his return, that isn’t the kind of death he meant.” But it is. Hence “taste”. There are two deaths. The first bodily and the second spiritual. *He’s referring to the first (to merely taste, rather than to eat) as those saved in him will only briefly experience death before being resurrected.* 10. *He cannot have (only) meant the destruction of Jerusalem because the events described (Christ coming in the clouds with God and angels, judging men according to what they had done) did not occur when Jerusalem fell,* though it is one of the signs his followers were instructed to associate with an imminent eschaton. 11. “But Jesus performed miracles!” ….according to a book written by his devoted followers, used to convert more people to their religion. According to books written by Scientologists about L. Ron Hubbard, he was one of America’s first nuclear physicists, a war hero and the greatest humanitarian ever to live. And the Qur’an says that Muhammad once split the moon in half by pointing at it, then rejoined the halves. Was Muhammad therefore a true prophet? 12. “How do you explain all those fulfilled prophecies?” *Almost all of which are recorded in one book of the Bible, then recorded after the fact as having come true in a later book of the Bible.* This is a very easy trick. Observe: In 1998 I predicted that on Sept. 11, 2001 planes would collide with the WTC towers. Amazing! How did I know that? Am I clairvoyant?

Why do y'all always come after Christians? You guys come at us, like we are exposing something you don't want to know. The world hates truth right now, people are blinded, and there is so much demonic influence going around, and people are just laughing while people get murdered and killed. All you're doing, is disappointing yourself. You try so hard to change us, we ain't falling for your tricks, and your worldly new order. Watch, the antichirst will come one day, and they will be revealed to the entire world. We'll see who's right soon enough. All I'll say, is don't expect too much after that. If you really did value your life, you would start getting to know Jesus Christ. Put your trust into him, because in the end, isn't the only thing you people care about is happiness? If you think there is more to life then just being a accidental mistake, which serves no purpose, I would strongly suggest you take I look into reading the Bible, and if you don't like reading, you should start praying to Christ.
