I'm attending Brigham Young University right now and taking an amazing class about how to live a good life. Research has been done in a field called positive psychology by professors who are both religious and not religious, and they find that people who are religious tend to be happier and have more meaning in life than those who are not. Even though I grew up in the Church my faith did not come immediately,, it has been a very slow process to grow and come to know God and Jesus for myself. It is fascinating to me to learn about this, because not only do I feel the joy that has come from being a follower of Christ, but science sees it too. Religion in general is a beautiful thing to me for people of all faiths, but especially the faith I have gotten from Jesus Christ and the Book of Mormon has been revolutionary in changing my life. Because I have the Holy Ghost with me and a testimony, I have become sensitive to things about myself and the world around me that I would have never realized without it, and those little things I have learned have added up over time to change my life and make me a much happier person.

@@emmastanford6696 I have studied this subject for years because I love black people and the fact is that term “skin of blackness” and the like is a Hebrew idiom used many times in the Old Testament (See Job, Jeremiah, Joel, Nahum, and Lamentations 4:1-10 is my favorite). It means dejection or gloom. So it’s use in the BoM is another evidence of the authenticity of the BoM, that it was written by people living in old testament times. Everyone in even the 1800’s knew people don’t change skin color. They would be foolish to write it. But Joseph Smith let it be and wrote what he saw (no punctuation even: the printer added those-, and did the translation in only 65 working days). What is a curse? It’s “separation from God” (absence of His spirit).

It is light and darkness; nothing to do with race. You can feel and see light radiating from people that are trying to follow Jesus, such as Calyann. Haters are shrouded in darkness.

Being Hispanic and likely a descendant of those cursed with a "skin of blackness" I've sincerely prayed about those scriptures. And while I was eventually given to understand that these words may mean something very different than we had ever considered...at the time I specifically received the answer of "I have written what I have written" and that it's not my place to question GOD but to be still and believe. I felt such peace after that! I don't know why these challenging phrases were included in the Book of Mormon. But I can testify that if you are willing to act in faith like Callie did and let the seed grow and take root you will experience glorious love and peace that passeth all understanding ♥

God is our Father in Heaven and, he sets the rules as all parents do! God lets us all know when we fail, and we all do, because we're not perfect! No matter what our skin color is ,he created us all and he loves each of us! And that's something that brings me great joy! At the time the SCRIPTURES we're written life was so very different, from life today and I always take that into account. So many differences, between then and now, including the way they spoke. As a causian, I never ever felt that God didn't love each and every one of US! He sent his beloved son Jesus Christ, to atone for each one of us. I appreciate your perspective on this. 🌿🌺🌿💝

I was born in Provo in 1974, on a Saturday. Dad was finishing up school at BYU, and I let Mom know (when she attended one of the original Saturday's Warrior productions) that was when I was coming. We lived in Preston, ID, for 4 years, until we moved to the Columbia Basin area of Washington state. I tell you this little bit of my story to say- I hear you. I felt it the most when I tried to go to school in Rexburg. I felt a dilemma in Mormon Corridor culture sometimes- that I was supposed to belong, and yet, I didn't. But yet my baby sis- although she was born in my hometown area, she's been living in the greater SLC area for several years. We're great-grandchildren of Rey L. Pratt. I know this "typical norm", a little bit. Yes, it's a beautiful thing to see someone like Calyann come to the Book of Mormon, who is clearly not of this church culture we know. Someone who doesn't seem to be a "golden investigator", and yet- has a deep desire to know the truth, anyways- because she already has some Gospel truth in her life. Who finds she belongs, no matter the initial doubts or concerns. I would dare say Calyann shows us what our walk with Jesus might be like, that it won't be easy, but that it will be worth it. We can submit our struggles to Christ and walk on with Him.

@@jaklumen I didn’t know it was called “corridor culture” but I definitely knew it existed! In Kansas we had a Sister Missionary from Utah in the 1970’s who said she really enjoyed being in the “mission field” because people were so different than in Utah. We had an interesting group of people that made up the Church in our town but I am certain there was always that cultural influence that kept many members in a negative place. Now I can see these things for what they are and separate the Church from the subcultures that develop amongst the members. It’s really a human nature tendency. The Book of Mormon clearly outlines these problems with the people and their behavior. Another reason to read and study the Book of Mormon. God has been waiting patiently for us to stand up and support the truth that we have been given. Thanks for speaking of your experience!

@@helenjohnson7583 Good advice to study Book of Mormon takes on this! I don't know if the term "Mormon Corridor" has been applied to Church culture, but it definitely exists outside of Utah. What parts of the Book of Mormon would you recommend to someone wanting to understand more? I mean, there's the Nephite disease/cycle of pride, that many Bible scholars will already be familiar with as the Israelite cycle of pride. I think Jacob's sermons apply. Certainly Zeniff and the stories of the Almas (father and son) do, too. Perhaps another LDS KZbinr has a good video to consider, advising us where to look. Food for thought. Thank you too for your thoughtful reply.

@@helenjohnson7583 Ah yes, the great Utah Mormon Cultural Divide and Code of Conduct. It really is a thing. As with your story about the missionary from Utah enjoying being in the "mission field" because the members were so much different from the members in Utah, I used to describe it by sarcastically by saying Well, the Church isnt as true in Washington as it is in Utah but it sure is a lot more enjoyable to live it here. Maybe that just means that we dont judge others as much (us vs them) or maybe some of us really are simply less devout. Still, as you can see from the comments of others, that approach pushes as many people away as it does attract them. I will take a friendly "mission field" Mormon over a "profoundly religious" Utah Mormon like Romney anytime.

I'm glad Calyann pushed through her doubts. I have some family who is LDS and some who are vehemently anti-Mormon. The family members who are anti-Mormon went through some of the same doubts and concerns that Calyann did, but instead of striving to "finish the book" as she did, they made up their minds. And they have had nothing but animosity toward the church since. I myself have spent half my life outside of the church. But despite what trials of faith I have, I have never gotten to far away. Because, regardless of what I believe, I know a few things. I know the LDS people I have met through out my life are good and decent people. I know they would help anyone. I know (at least the ones I know) are not judgemental and would be happy to see literally anyone come to church, no matter their pains, no matter their fears, no matter the holes in their hearts. I respect Calyann for putting in the work. Faith does not come overnight, and for some of us it does not come in a few years. But I think those who "endure" will find what they are looking for.

I remember when I was exploring the Book of Mormon for the first time. I was looking at everything through the eyes of a skeptic, I could see how a non-believer would think about the things they were learning or reading. Then I had a moment where I thought, "What if I looked at everything through the eyes of a believer?" I was curious to see how the experience would change, and boy did it. I started to feel the Holy Ghost stir my heart to love, compassion, forgiveness. The Book of Mormon has power that helped me to overcome my worst weaknesses, things that I had tried previously to conquer with shear will power, and couldn't. I was amazed at how quickly Heavenly Father's power in the Book of Mormon changed my heart, my thoughts, desires, and actions. Wonderful testimony Caly. I had forgotten that I looked at everything from a skeptic's perspective too, and the Spirit guided me to that moment where I had a choice to rather learn as a potential believer instead.

I don't know this still baffles my mind, but like you said Calyann in your testimony you are always wanting to find or know more. I am literally like a sponge trying to soak everything up. I used to study another religion my faith was headstrong until something altered my way of thinking. I can honestly say I have never felt this connected as I did when I was studying the other religion. I feel grateful for my sister in law for introducing me to this new journey I am walking.

Wow what a beautiful story. I have been a member my whole life (44yrs) but have really struggled with my faith over the last 25 years. I am one with wavering faith that you mentioned and one thing I haven’t done in all those 25+ years is sincerely read the Book of Mormon. I never watch these videos but I’m glad I didn’t scroll past this one. Thank you for sharing your story, I’m going to read the BoM and hopefully let the spirit back into my life.

I watch this over and over and still get inspired each time. Like Clark was saying that it was the power of the Book of Mormon AND in these 'End Times' the Book of Mormon is going to become even MORE powerful where if a person just reads the Introduction they will be fully converted. E.G. 'I just read the Introduction so gimme the Missionaries'! Introduction is actually one of the BEST Missionary tools there is! Says everything in a condensed version!

I had a similar experience while reading the Bible, Ephesians 5:23 "For the husband is the head of the wife," I stopped reading because it hurt. I had experienced men treating woman poorly and here was this scripture that seemed to condone it. I immediately knelt down and prayed. The thought came to me, mankind has misunderstood the relationship between men and women. God loves his daughters just as much as he loves His sons. I went back and finished reading the scripture and had even more understanding, "...even as Christ is the head of the church." Christ gave his life for others, he loved and taught and sacrificed for the good of others. This is how men should be to women. This experience helped me realize my worth before God and changed my whole perspective on life.

I married a brown man. I knew I wasn’t seeing the story in the Book of Mormon correctly. The scriptures aren’t wrong, I knew I didn’t understand. I prayed. The answer was it was just a way to distinguish between the Lamanites & the Nephites. If they had been darker skinned he may of caused the skin to turn lighter or even a different shade people come in. My answer was we decide who we are. Christ was dark skinned. Is he cursed? No. People put man’s ideas and intentions on God. They don’t stand back and ask God his intentions. I love this woman! Thank you for your amazing story! ❤️

I loved her powerful realization: 'I can either be a skeptic or I can choose to believe.' I think that it is such a great way to put it! I testify that that not only is the gospel true, but it makes sense; When you put the pieces together, they fit. But it is a big picture, so it takes some dedication to see how they all fit. The prophets tell NO lies in the Book of Mormon; they speak truths of god that they have learned. And together anything that seems contrary about their opinions, becomes a map to the perfect truth behind it all. It is a narrow gate, but anyone can choose to go in. And the blessings from following Jesus Christ are eternal.
