Jazz time,
I've got a live metal gig soon so I decided to appropriately prepare by playing some jazz! 🤣
I decided to tackle a crazy version of the famous Night in Tunisia jazz standard, originally written by the great Dizzy Gillespie. This wild & tricky take was arranged by the great pianist Jesus Molina. His tribute is considerably faster and is in a fun 11/8 to twist things around.
To step up the difficulty even further I decided to weave in and out of some the piano parts, while holding the bass groove. I've been meaning to test my unique sweep technique for a bit and this song had the perfect little arpeggio section in the melody for me to use it on. It worked out well!
The part I really enjoyed playing was during the drum solo that starts at around 1:50, where I catch Jesus's slick comps as I pop in and out of the bass groove. That was pretty satisfying 😁
For those that dont know him, Jesus Molina, is one of the most giftest musicians alive today.. although he plays many instruments , Piano is his main one. He is considered by many to be the next Chick Corea.. He is a true prodigy and one of my greatest inspirations in music. The man's playing is truly terrifying to say the least.
Im so glad I spent many years in my 20's immersing myself in jazz theory and ear training . The experience has really made listening to and composing to music, much more enjoyable and colourful. Bringing these tools back into other genres I love , like metal, is what it's all about for me.
As always ,this tune was figured out by ear and recorded in an unedited take.
