ABOUT THE VIDEO
_
In this video, I talk about Jesus, the Bible (The Gospels in the New Testament), The Book of Matthew, priorities, attention, regret, time, virtue, success, and building your best life.
In The Book of Matthew, Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” So according to Jesus, the wise man builds his house on rock, while the fool builds his house on sand. And as you’ll see, to me, this is clearly a metaphor for the smartest way to build your life. What does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand, and how do we do that? That’s what I’m gonna explore in this essay.
Let’s start at the beginning: what does it mean to build your life on rock instead of sand? Building your life on rock means that you’re building your life on a strong foundation, and if you build your life on a strong foundation, you won’t fall apart when hard times inevitably come. You’re able to survive and thrive in any tragedy. All the effort that you put into building your life won’t have been wasted, because your work stands the test of time. You’ll have this constant feeling of moving forward, and you won’t be regretful of how you spent your time. But building your life on sand means that you’re building your life on a shaky foundation, and if you build your life on a shaky foundation, you will fall apart when hard times inevitable comes. When tragedy strikes, you’ll find that much of the effort that you put into building your life has been a waste of time. You’ll feel frozen, or as if you’re moving backwards, and you’ll be regretful. You’ll say to yourself, “why did I waste my time on those things which don’t matter now?” or, ”why did I think those things were so important?” A lot of your time will have been spent in vain, and you’ll find yourself having to rebuild your life once more. So how do we get it right from the start? How do we build our life on rock instead of sand?
The life we build depends on how we spend our attention. Our attention is our most valuable resource, and it’s limited. So how do we decide how to spend it? How we spend our attention is determined by our priorities. And all priorities fall into one of two categories: time-dependent priorities and timeless priorities. So what does it mean, then, to build a house on rock? It means building a life where your highest priority is a timeless one.

Facts. But who or what is God? I tried to define him (it, her, them) and could not do so definitively. The best I could come up with is, Love, married to Wisdom. And even then, how do I define Love? As the all encompassing force which pervades all things. How do I define Wisdom? As the negation of all that is false or corrupt. In other words and as simply as i can say it, God is: all that is, minus all that is not. In other words, God is the only real reality. My two cents, spend as you wish.

To learn and then to teach is also to love and to be radically honest. Easy stuff. But you, salter of salt and lighter of candles, must also call out to the brethen: let us not ferment with hypocrisy, let us not ferment coveting power, fame, cash nor eternal youth. Just serve and chill, should be easy yet we cling. Will we listen to our Master or keep seeding death?

@Gabrielle Parker can you point these verses out for me? I think i may have read a different translation than you, because I didn't see such. However, i will tell you what I did see, i saw verses that advocated compassion toward others. I saw verses that encouraged humility (defined as viewing others as equal to yourself rather than below you, including slaves and women). Slavery and oppression of the gentler sex existed as a fact of life for most people throughout history, however thru the prompting of enlightened people who came into contact with a loving God, people began to question the oppressive institutions and saw a need to bring balance to the world by right action. Let's take slavery for example, slave owners would treat their slaves like animals or worse and considered them to be scum and would force them to work Non-Stop with terrible living conditions. The Hebrew law implemented a day of rest for all including slaves and animals. It also implemented away for slaves to become free (considering that in most civilizations and cultures throughout history once a slave you were slave for life and even your children if you had any would be slaves). But still I would like you to try to convince me of the veracity of your claim. I'm not a close-minded bigot. I'm not going to beat you over the head with a Bible. I want an honest and open conversation with you.

The beauty of this interpretation here is that christians will say the foundation is the word of god which is indeed a timeless priority. For the non religious, learning and a willingness to embrace uncertainty and your failures brings you a sense of power and comfort similiar but different than the power of faith in god. Two paths to the same form of enlightenment.

The thing I think that is truly beautiful about the story of Jesus is that though he was the son of God and the only one Worthy of God's love, Jesus made himself lower than all so that we could be called the worthy children of the Most High God. He truly is the cornerstone upon which the foundation of my life may be built. 2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

For me the foundation Jesus speaks is to build our lives based on what he teaches us. The more we focus/prioritize our attention on him putting his teachings into practice, .... the more our life will be better ...Jesus is the rock...Just do things and live life with Jesus. So even if we get cancer, learnings don't matter money don't matter ...what matters is how much we put the teachings of Jesus in our life. How miracles are true,

This is the Message of the Bible simply summarized in the two verses also found in Matthew 22:37-39.. Your video didn't mention the Infinitely Greatest Rock to Build your Life on 1st by pursuing His love & moved right to God's Second Command for Living on the Rock.. I don't know man, I think it's more complicated than this. I thought about similar concepts, but personally called them Processes vs. Projects. Processes(timeless) don't have a final, achievable goal, where Projects(time-dependent) obviously do. Here's the problem I have with the explanation in the video: Despite what is told there, I think timeless priorities can be bad and time-depended can be good. For example that guy who wanted lots of money also has a timeless priority: getting richer. Just as learning, you can do that all the time, it's your way of life. On the other hand, imagine that that rich guy after getting cancer decided to spend all the time and resources he has left on a time-dependent priority-creating some kind of a cancer-treatment foundation. I'm trying to say that "sand" or "rock" priorities not necessarily defined by whether they are timeless or time-dependent. Actually, I believe you need to have both in your life. Timeless priority can be Learning, but time-dependent can be Passing Exam or Writing a Book or anything. It's difficult to only have timeless, since it's more of a direction, it's vague. It's also bad to only have time-dependent or goals without understanding a bigger picture, since you'd be like a robot which goes from one checkpoint to another. But when you have both and when they make sense to you, then you know where and why you are going and that's what should eliminate any regrets when you the tragedy comes.

I’m not a Grammar Police but…you’ve got a missing link in your comment and that would also clarify the leftovers I did throw away a couple of nights earlier as I write to you right now after having had my growl a few many weeks ago..! 😊

I have been watching your videos for a while. What I've noticed is that sometimes I understand so easily, and ither times I have to rewind a few times. On times that it clicks, it's usually because I have examples from my own life that fit what you are saying so much. It is then that your video becomes the missing piece in my understanding. In those moments, I feel very insighted (if that's a word haha). Thanks for another useful video 😊😊

Insightful interpretation and parables, especially based upon the important "when rain comes down" theme. Many people live their lives within "if these sunny days continue indefinitely" mindset.

This is so good. I had a interpretation about its teaching that was similar to yours, but you've explained it much better. To me, solid foundation would be the spirit (the world of ideias, like Plato says; the metaphiscs), because that dimension time can't touch. The weak foundation would be the material things (money, looks, assets), because what is material, in a paradoxal way, is more volatil than what is not, therefore time take it way. What i hadn't noticed is: what time can't take way it can't obstruct to exist. That's empowering. Your view helped a lot. Thank you from heart!

There was a Webtoon I read called "The Golden Spoon" where a kid finds a golden spoon who allows him to switch lives with a rich kid. Even though he ended up with all the money in the world and managed to help his previous family, he regrets not being with his family as much as his friend who he swapped lives with, since money was first in his book

Great video! I think understanding Jesus values and understanding him as a philosopher, instead of just putting them at a religious perspective is the best way to put his teachings into practice.

Great vid! While I agree learning is one of the most timeless endeavors you can pour yourself into, Jesus' analogy of the rock vs sand was about following his teaching vs our whims. His teachings ultimately are about love and truth. They are the eternals, the characteristics of God that will be a rock to build your life on. Knowledge (through learning) can come and go, but love's reverberations will echo through human existence.

Your last two videos touch on the most elusive subject ever, and that is God. I cannot put in words how immeasurably helpful your comprehension of the text Matthew is. It is as if you lit light amidst the dark. It is the act of love amidst the chaos. It is the act of giving amidst the war. I am deeply grateful for your channel. Thank you!
