when I heard this song for the first time in 7th grade;I remember thinking, finally a song that speaks to MY beliefs. This whole album and really Ian's lyrical mastering of words throughout the years is about his desire to find God.He is very honest in his quest, which is why I have and always will love Jethro Tull.He doesn't need to have all the answers, but the fact that he lets us in on the process is cherished stuff in my book.

One of the best RnR songs ever, it's got everything: melody, great rhythm section, great lead and lyrics of monumental significance written by a then 23-year old flute player who stands as an equal to Jagger as best frontman. Travesty they're not in the RnR Hall of Fame.

Compare Ian to Jagger is a insult. A character as Ian with such talent and charisma can top any frontman you can think of, even Mercury
@cybolton302

The main point concerns the song. The second point is that they're not in the RnR HoF. The third was "frontman." I could have used Freddie, Daltrey, Plant, Janis, Springsteen, Ian Hunter, etc. and I've seen them all live multiple times (except Joplin). The point regarding "frontman" was to pick the most "popular" name and say Ian was/is at least his equal, even though Ian's name never appears on any "Best" lists. The image I'll carry to my grave is Ian on one leg, the other bent, with the foot braced against his knee, in full minstrel pose.

Mt friend, to each their own. I saw every Tull show through "Passion Play." Ian's abilities were refined from the start. I saw every Queen show through News of the World ( Q1, Q2, Sheer Hear Attack and Opera). Freddie evolved into a great showman; Ian began as one.

I was also one of those lucky kids, in the 70's, who saw Jethro Tull when they toured to promote numerous albums, including Thick As a Brick, Passion Play, War Child, and Minstrel In the Gallery. It was great to see them perform some of the concept albums, like "Brick" and "Passion", in their entirety, complete with stage props and video. Wind Up was always one of my favorite songs to hear live. A lot of younger people today don't realize how popular Tull were, in their prime.

I'm always hearing about these Blues guitarists that everyone raves about. I'm not knocking them, but I just don't hear it. A lot of notes that don't seem to go anywhere. When I hear guitar, it's Martin Barre that catches my ear. If his leads don't get your foot tapping, then you're tone deaf. He almost makes it bark at you and he really knows how to put notes together in a catchy fashion. My favorite lead guitarist who knows how to play Rock.

I've seen Tull well over 40 times--this was the very first song I ever saw them play...they opened with it on the 1975 Warchild tour show at the Oakland Coliseum. The show actually started with a string quartet and a Martin Barre guitar solo, but this was the first full song. And when Ian (literally) exploded out of nowhere on the first big downbeat of the uptempo section my jaw hit the floor, and it's been there ever since.

No doubt my man. Saw all the tours between 72 and 2009 and a few since. Was actually the middle section of Wind Up, the part that starts with how do you dare to tell me,. That song played in full had been used the prior two years, maybe three, I forget if they used it to close shows on the actual Aqualung tour. But you describe it well, I was in third row center in Chicago Stadium. Out of all those years that was the single most compelling entrance of many.

As a kid of divorced parents with a sh*t for a dad going to Catholic school this song had real meaning to me. "How'd you dare tell me that I'm my father's son when that was just an accident of Birth". While I'm sure Ian Anderson was being metaphorical in his writing it was literal to me.

Exactly the same for me - just a different venue - Rainbow Theatre London November 1974. I was already a huge fan from records; 18 years old and my first live sight of my hero is through a perfectly timed explosion of smoke to a song I love. Seen JT many times since and the hero worship has mellowed out, even if it lingers, but that remains one of THE moments of my life and that particular concert definitely the concert of my life.

Even back in '78 when I was trying to share Tull with some of my friends, you'd occasionally get the "What's that shit!" look fired at you. Correct for a window of about 2 to 3 years they were the biggest band in the world, that includes Zep, I still remember the front page of our newspaper 1/2 was devoted to the upcoming Tull show, 1972, showed the lines of people stretched over 5 city blocks for tickets, and the show was by far the best performance I have ever seen by Tull or anyone else for that matter, the only other time that I would mention was the first, late1968 at the old Boston Tea Party, think about who was touring then!

When Aqualung first came out it was released in UK before USA. I had to place an order to have one of the Brit LPs held for me about 10 miles from where I lived (in Chicago) coz I COULD NOT WAIT for the US release. Remember it well. And even that LP did indeed have this song recorded considerably less loud than the rest of the LP. I always felt it was no accident but a device to make me/the world move in closer to the speaker like: "listen up here, I'm going to tell you something important".

I once saw IA 'wow' the crowd with only voice, guitar, and flute for over 45 minutes in Ft Worth Texas with NO POWER at ALL (while technicians strung a rescue cable to the building next door) It was absolutely INCREDIBLE

Yes, a true classic with meaning...Last cut side 2 of the Big "A" album... I'm 67, and there are very few days I don't bring up in my Mind..."Not the kind you have to wind Up on Sunday" So profound and TRUE

“I don’t believe you, you had the whole damn thing all wrong. He’s not the kind you have to wind up on Sunday”. This final lyric has a profound meaning relevant then, now, and maybe always. As a kid we had wind up toys that would skitter about for 30 seconds and the fizzle out waiting for a new spin. Wonder if that came to mind remember it is 1971 I think....

I’ll never forget them starting their concert with the bridge to this song. Blew the roof off of the Omni in Atlanta! Also, my father having a LONG discussion with my brother’s friend Sam about this song. Vivid recollections!!

I remember hearing that for the first time in about 7th grade as well. It seemed kind of unusual that our English teacher was playing Jethro Tull in the classroom. I thought she was the only one in the world that did it and the only one that could get away with it. I remember people would ditch class just to go to hers. Not sure if I ever learned a thing in that class except maybe that there are other alternative uses for text books besides reading them and not to be caught without one!

So cool! Saw them in 1972, Lansing Civic Center. Riff sounds a lot like "I got a line on you" by Spirit but they never ended up in court like Zep did.😂

It's great songs like these, with the thoughtful creative lyrics that makes Anderson (and this Jethro Tull line up) so worthy of praise and respect. This could have been great, if not better? acoustically, just acoustic guitar and piano. But great like this as well. We knew how good it was back then, (in my case the backdrop to 'O' level revision) and we know how good it still stands today.
