The 1 millions "displaced" people didn't leave for free, they were paid above-market value for their properties. So while it's still a sacrifice to leave your neighbourhood due to development, it's not that dramatic. Also, January/February is the worst time of the year to visit ChongQing due to the fog (which disappears in the spring)

Actually the Three Gorges project came against a lot of opposition and debate amongst many people in China over many years. But the benefits for future long term planning greatly outweighed the negatives, so it went ahead. I think we are seeing what that kind of forward thinking development can result in just looking at China today! So it's not the black and white story that you'd expect in the West. Personally, I think it was the right decision, climate change has increased extreme weather, especially flooding, and that would have put more than a million people in serious danger. Good job China 👍🇨🇳

Originally, the people living in the Three Gorges were rural people, and their living standards were not high. However, the residents who immigrated due to the Three Gorges Dam were given houses in the city, and they also improved their living standards.

@@L锐 You gotta be voluntary if your home is going to be 30 ft under water! The Three Gorges immigrants issue is still a heavy topic till now: some immigrants are better off, some are not. The location of the "22nd floor" happened to be the hotel where I stayed during my trip to Chongqing last month. I checked in the first night, and the next morning the hotel waiter told me that I could leave from the 22nd floor to take the subway. When I walked to that bridge, I was really shocked. Like you all, I took a video from the small hole in the bridge guardrail, haha. I really enjoy the experience in Chongqing, but there are only two drawbacks. One is that the fruit with exceptionally bright colors is sold everywhere. I think that fruit is definitely abnormal. Perhaps it has no safety issues, but perhaps it is non natural, so I did not purchase it. The second issue is that some parts of Chongqing do not smell very good, perhaps due to the difficulty in designing and maintaining drainage ditches in mountain cities. But overall, this is definitely a city with a very travel experience. Additionally, Chengdu is very close, and I am sure it is also a great travel city.

In China, we have this philosophy called 落叶归根, roughly translated to 'leaves returning to their roots', which means we all hope to go back to the place we were born and raised when we are old or passed away. People in the Three Gorges areas really made sacrifices to move out from their homes also because it was where their ancestors were buried. But we also know how much it means to the collective good and how little it is to our own interests and it's what keeps us so united. Our government provided both compensation and apartments for them for how much they have sacrificed.

No, we don't enslave others. We shed blood and sweat solely for the sake of our descendants to undertake these tasks. The accumulation of any wealth requires individuals to dedicate themselves. When there is no original capital, the body becomes the only capital. Only through hard work can wealth be accumulated, leading to a better life. Chinese people understand this, which is why there have been generations of effort and dedication, allowing us to have our present wealth. Additionally, those infrastructure developments are for the people, and the people now enjoy the convenience they bring, not for a particular monarch.@@ThomasRosehands

The part of the article where you two are mentioned reads as follows: "KZbinrs behind "JetLag Warriors," a couple who first visited Shanghai via a transition visa-free policy which was resumed in 2023, issued a series of China tour videos to share their great experience of different cities and villages, including the diversity of food, the culture and the amazing sceneries. The introduction for their first video reads "we were told not to go to China and we felt a bit anxious and nervous. But China is not what we expected…" " Then, their video released on January 13 was titled "why China will be the best travel destination for 2024." The introduction reads, "It [China] is so different from what is reported by Western media! There are many negative descriptions circulating online about China. However, China is modern, future-oriented, but also natural and traditional… Come to China to see the truth for yourself!"

What you said about the difference between Canada and China when it comes to projects is partially true. In Canada you only scrap projects that benefit the majority because of a sudden ''moral'' obligation, yet Canada is still continuing with all the drilling projects that indeed displaces Indigenous populations because it benefits corporations. China works for its people not corporate overlords.

My extra info regarding chongqing history: it is well known that the mountainous landscape of chongqing makes it the strongest defensive stronghold in ancient and even early modern China. Mongolian army spent 30 years to conquer chongqing. In fact, this may help extend song dynasty's length of era in southern part of China. During WWII, Chongqing is the provisional capital of China where Japanese army also cannot conquer Chongqing due to its iconic landscape.

When I visited the city back in 2006 to start a tour of the Three Gorges Dam, Chongqing was one of the largest cities in China but only a fraction of the size today. I was told that most of the apartment buildings were under 15 stories tall. The reason was that 15 stories was the limit they were permitted to build without elevator. The residents had to be in the greatest physical conditions to live in these buildings, especially they have to climb through those stiff hills to reach these buildings. That was just nuts. I imagine the most of those buildings have been converted or rebuilt today.

Maybe you got the wrong information. The previous rule was that elevators were required above the ninth floor. Because Chongqing is three-dimensional, the same building can be reached by several roads, so it is not necessarily necessary to enter from the first floor, there is a direct road to the skybridge (corridor). There are still many old people living in the old building. A few years ago, the government subsidized the installation of elevators on the external walls of some old buildings, and residents used credit cards to reach their residential floors, which was very convenient and safe. PS: Chongqing people, parents of the old building a few years ago has installed an elevator.

GPS doesn't work there. Need the Chinese version of navigation apps. Not only because of attitude, there are a lot of lanes and exits on the bridges.

When are you going to Harbin? Can't wait after seeing you buy the winter gear in the last video. Also here are some recommendations for more places to visit in China. Cities to explore Beijing and Xi'an. Beijing for the obious reasons (Forbidden city, Great Wall, Tainanmen square, Summer palace etc etc). And Xi'an also for the very obious Terracota army. And the other obious reason across all of China. The food. Every province have quite different food culture and it's worth it alone to try the cusine in every province. Cultural place to explore The Cultural city of Lijiang in Yunnan, China. It's where most of Chinas tea and coffie are produced and was once a very important stop in the Silk road. It also got some really nice nature scenery in Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Lugu Lake. Nature to explore Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Hunan, China. Perhaps most famous for the Tianzi Mountain range (or more known as the set location of the Hallelujah Mountains in the movie Avatar). It's an absolutely massive national park where you need several days to fully explore.

I like your video. It is so natural and spontaneous. The commentary is simply factual without political stereotyping and insinuations. Some of the scenes are breathtaking. Only drawback I wish to complain: THERE WAS NO 4k video for download! Please give a little thought on this!
