I only found this one…. Were there more? A 310hp Mooney can exceed 2k’pm in climb… 4k’pm is a great way to get to the FLs! And… the other single engine, retract, that is turbine and pressurized… is the Evolution’s little sister… Lancair IV-PT 😃
@speedomars Жыл бұрын
@@AC-jk8wq Not even close to that. Laughing. A Mooney is a clunky, draggy, all metal, rivet ridden beast. If an all carbon viber Cirrus SR22T climbs at about 1200 fpm at sea level, no way a Mooney does nearly twice that on the same engine.
@AC-jk8wq Жыл бұрын
@@speedomars OK, you are right…. The clunky 310hp, normally aspirated, IO550 powered, Mooney only climbs out at 2kfpm…. Not quite 2X. 😃 Sort of a first world problem. The nice part of composites… all those smooth complex curved surfaces… The back side of composites… they are not very light… At altitude…. The aerodynamic drag is very much reduced. Getting to altitude… The extra weight never lightens up. For a pair of TNs… the power never drops off with altitude. Climb rate is all about excess hp… T/O distance is all about hp/wt ratio… or speeding from 0 to 65 kias… The IO550 is pretty amazing… Still not quite Evolution performance, but it is factory built. 😃

@@AC-jk8wq Mooney defenders and braggarts have 3 big problems. 1. they either lie or exaggerate specs and performance to make their purchase feel less dumb 2. they usually find 'fault' with superior technology and superior products due to that defensiveness. and finally 3. they really hate that Mooney went out of business due to lack of sales and being unable to compete with Cirrus.

If you're going to look at that in person, how about N844X - Austin Meyer's Evolution? He opted for an 850-horsepower PT6. I'm sure you already know that he is the founder of Laminar Research (X-Plane flight simulator). He is also not too far from where you're based. Since he also has his own KZbin channel, you could collaborate and end up with content on both channels.

I don't have any experience with the evolution but I know that I am sometimes very surprised when I see a plane in person and it looks dramatically larger than what I expected it to look. Case in point, the first time I ever saw a quest zodiac in person it was huge. So again, I'll be interested to see if when you see the plane in person if your opinion changes about the roominess inside. Because at first glance I agree with you.

Other than speed, I'd consider the TBM a much better airplane, thus the price delta. When carrying a load and having the versatility to fly into more rugged strips, I think I'd put my money on the Pilatus over the Lacair. Cost not an option - I wouldn't give the Lancair a second glance over the TBM 960 or the latest Pilatus. The Lancair looks sweet, but when it comes to hauling big stuff into a muddy airstrip, or having to rely on good customer support, etc.. I'd stick with the more standard aircraft. Keep up the good work with your vids.

You are correct in that it does get COLD up there(SubZero). Now, that being said, two conditions must be present for icing.: freezing temperature & moisture. if only one of those conditions is present, then no worry about ice forming on the aircraft! I think it is a rule that ALL experimental aircraft are not allowed to fly into KNOWN icing conditions. But, I understand that since Evolution is being built by another company, I think they have an option where they have some deicing equipment on the leading edge of the wings if the pilot inadvertently runs into non-reported icing conditions to assist before he can deviate to another altitude. Seriously, KEEP up the good work! I LOVE your channel. As a black man, I am MOST happy to see young black men such as yourself making a living in Aviation. Much more now than when I was in. EVO is a fantastic plane with incredible useful load, top tier performance, reliability of a PT6, benign flight characteristics (unlike some other Lancair products) which make it an exception platform to transition into for a SR22 Also I see a lot of comments on interior space - there is more space in an EVO than a SR22 Also my fuel burn is 32 gallons hr at 28k at 275 TAS

You young kids have bigger balls than me. Here is a thought. Feedback is appreciated. If I were going to spend $2,000,000 on a kit that would try to kill me at every opportunity, I'd just buy a highly fungible TMB 960. TBM will be around and tech support will be around for as long as you own the Airplane. Experienced A&P's and parts to service it. Let's be honest. If you have $2 million to throw at an airplane, you can come up with $4 million. When you have millions to throw away on superfluous travel you are a very valuable person who probably shouldn't risk your life in experimental aircraft. You have families, businesses, and employees who desperately depend upon you! If you are that guy, and you die, it will wreak havoc on the lives of 100+ people, minimum. Buying the kit and handing it over completely to a professional to build is also done, but I think that's a grey area, as really that professional becomes an uncertified manufacturer, whereas in the FAA rules the homebuilder supposed to be the builder of an experimental.

I would think with 750hp, you could top a 300 kt cruise with this aircraft.
@blaze6655 Жыл бұрын
Horsepower is a bit of a misnomer in the turbine world. It can do the speed but there are trade-offs turbine operators have to consider. First, alll published turbine HP’s are published at sea level. As they climb the lose horsepower. Most Evolutions are powered by the 750HP PT6A-135A which at its most fuel efficient cruise altitude of 28,000ft puts out about 300HP. Which yields about ~275kt at ~32 GPH. If you fly lower, say 25,000ft you can get to 300KT but your fuel burn jumps to 42+GPH. Some Evo’s were built with the 850HP PT6A-42 which can hold more HP up higher. There it will do 300KT cruise at 28,000 with a fuel burn around 38GPH and 325KT around 50GPH. The trade-offs are speed fuel economy and engine longevity. The harder you push your expensive PT6A shorter it’s time between overhaul and PT6A overhauls are not cheap. Most of us pull it back a bit and run the engine cooler, save fuel and extend range. These trade offs are not unique to the Evolution. They apply to all turbine’s whether it’s TBMs, Pilatus PC-12’s and Piper Meridians etc. What manufacturers publish in their marketing materials is almost always best of best case scenario pushing the engine hard. Their goal is not necessarily honesty but to sell airplanes.

Regarding its flight characteristics it’s very docile and predictable just a hell of a lot more performance. It pretty much has the same rotation and approach to landing speeds as a Cirrus SR22.
