It's a really cool instrument. I have some questions. Are you controlling the pneumatic valve? Or do you control the pneumatic regulator? Isn't the pneumatic valve ON/OFF only? How do you play polyphony? I'm sorry I have a lot of questions. I'm impressed by your work, so I'd like to make one, please help me
@DJthefirst2 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. I am using special SMC SX-10 Valves that can switch up to 1.2 kHz. I send a PWM signal at the note frequency to the valve and it chops the air into sound waves at that frequency. The only problem is you will have to get a custom manifold machined which could cost 200-300$ I lucked out as my university machine shop did me a solid and machined the part for the project no cost. I might have the cad file somewhere but it might take some digging to get it. The software is currently a work in progress. Each valve can play any note but non polyphonically. My software all runs on an Esp32 that you connect to your computer. Currently I use Hairless Midi to communicate with the Esp32 but in the next few weeks I should have a website that can connect over serial so all you will need to do is upload to the esp32 and go to my website.

Here’s the gift hub. Everything is still a work in progress with bugs scattered around. I can help with software setup if you need. I also have support for other instruments such as HDD, StepperMotors, And a ShiftRegister Piano or drum kit like in my hammered dulcimer video. github.com/DJthefirst/Mechanical-Midi-Music/blob/main/ESP32_Client_V0.1/src/main.cpp

I'd be very interested to see this turned into a virtual instrument that you can mess around with as opposed to building a unit and sending the midi signals to it, it would provide a super unique sound and would be awesome, it's a very interesting way of achieving the 8-bit/square waves sound, to be honest I'd prefer this over an analogue synth because of the addition of room sound. This is super awesome!

It takes air and chops it into sound waves at the frequency of the played note with high speed solenoids. My computer sends music midi data in the forum or note c4 on note c4 off to an Arduino mega which uses a lookup table with the milliseconds of every note saved to toggle pins. The pins go to transistors that just switch the solenoids. That’s basically how it works there are allot more features and setting to such as pitch bending and polyphonic note playing
