There is a great quote he had...once you’ve done it they can never take that from you. He is right. I spent the first few years as an Engineer thinking it could be taken in some way. But it isn’t true.

Marty was truly one of the best , consistant defensive tackles in NFL history.- -- the man played every single down as if it was his last- -- just like his teammates Klecko, Sallam and Gastineau and lets not forget Baldwin and Bennett- -what a shame the offense wasn't on the same level as the defense. .....

Today an athlete can finish in 3 to 3 in a half years. They have to have hours counting towards a degree. You can't get behind if you do, you can't play. He contributed to why there is stereotypes about football players.

Does anyone recall the game where Marty got so worked up against Jim Kelly & the Buffalo Bills , he had Jim on the ground by his neck & was roughing him up when the referee came running over to break it up and on his microphone he said 10 yard penalty FOR GIVING HIM THE BUSINESS ! !--- LOL. LOL

I was there at Giant Stadium that day when that happened. Kelly, had recently joined the Bills, after the USFL folded. The Bills were not there yet as a team, but Kelly was making an impact quickly as a player. Marty was throwing punches on the bottom of the pile. Classic referee moment. The referee was one of the leagues top guys. Ben ... somebody. Jets won that day.

69 and looked 109. Back then, players played football and didn't have to keep their grades up. Today it's the reason why, people have stereotypes. A few athletes didn't take classes seriously. (He graduated with Jonathan Allen.)

Good for Marty Lyons -- CONGRATULATIONS, I'm happy for him, and I respect him !!! TOO MANY players of his era (and actually from the 1950s when "football mills" started until recent years when some players started VOLUNTARILY leaving college WITHOUT using up their NCAA eligibility because the courts and NFL now allowed players to enter the Draft early) simply "played ball" and did NOT earn their degrees/graduate. All they did in those years was USE UP THEIR ELIGIBILITY to play COLLEGE sports ... and so they moved on from school because they wanted to play pro ball and were good enough, OR because the college/university no longer "needed" them because their eligibility had been used up and the player could no longer "benefit" them. Given the above, IMO, it's a disgrace that SO MANY so-called institutions of higher education failed their student athletes that way in yesteryear (and sometimes even today -- I'm not talking about players who leave early of their own volition). Yes, it's absolutely incumbent upon a student-athlete to do HIS/her part and attend class regularly, do all assignments, etc. (instead of simply attending practice, playing sports, and then partying away like there's no tomorrow). BUT it's ALSO incumbent upon the coaches and universities to ENSURE that the players are NOT just doing sports and partying, that they ARE attending classes and keeping up with their academic obligations, AND that they get the players some study/tutorial help if needed to stay on track academically (and NO, I do NOT mean tutors that cheat by "doing" the work for the student-athlete).
