Wow, dude, major kudos to you on this video. You seem like a cool cat and I appreciate your sense of humor and the way you keep things simple when you're explaining everything. Rather than going through the half-dozen or so other possible options for why there's no heat (like several other videos on KZbin) you focused on the single project at hand, which is what most of us weekend warriors are doing, or wanting to do, in our driveways/garages. We're not looking for 4-5 steps to fix 6-8 possible problems, we want to know the most likely problem, how to go about remedying it, and how long it might take. You checked every one of those boxes. I'm now subscribed and confident I can tackle this project, which is a big relief because I've been wondering why my dash is continually covered in, well, I didn't know what the hell it was?? Til now. Literally just dusted and through some protectant on the dash and console this past Wednesday and two days later, Friday (Christmas Eve), I started noticing it again. This has been going on for a month or so and the car is almost unbearable to drive if it's 25 degrees or less. So, I'm gonna start the demo, all thanks to you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and all the best to you with your channel! Cheers

I remember foam coming out of my vents a couple of years ago. When cold outside my car blows cold air. When it’s hot outside. The AC blows hot air. So I’m going to check the blend door. On my VW Beetle

Great video! Quick question. I am hunting down the issue. I recently replaced heater core and ac for my 2000 Jetta. I also get the foam out of my vents & My issue is that when I want AC or heat the Ac/Heat control doesn’t work I think. It worked for a little bit like a month. Ac was nice and cold. Heat was hot as well. But when I would switch to ac to check then back to heat felt just like fan. No heat anymore. I checked out ac/heat control today and cables and everything connected to it seems ok. This tape that you put on it is to make an air tight seal? Is that what the foam was there initially for? Sorry for my dumb question. I am trying to solve this but I’m stuck. Have you had any tape fly out of vents by any chance. My blower motor is fine. Old but fine. Any ideas?! Thx
@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage Ай бұрын
@Pichycena2011 Putting tape over the blend door is to make an airtight seal. The idea Volkswagen had using the foam was to let a little bit of air pass through to prevent a whistling sound. The problem being, over time, foam does break down and falls apart. Which in turn means the air is no longer being directed at all. Which is why we go back in to seal it with tape. The air will then be directed as it should. Sealing this completely, you may find a slight whistle with the AC or heat on. I have one jetta I've done this on that whistles and another I've done that doesn't. This jetta was done several years ago and is still working just fine. Alternatively, they do make rubber "plugs" you can buy that fit inside the holes. It sounds plausible that this is your issue. But, I wouldn't expect it to be a sudden problem. More of a slow degradation of the desired temperature over time. It could be that one of the yellow/green control cables has become disconnected. Regardless if you have foam coming from your vents. The doors will need to be done sooner or later.

@@ColtonsGarage thank you so much for that feedback!!!!!!!!!!! I really appreciate it. Long story short this is my first ever car I got a long time ago manual mk4 vr6 and I am trying to bring it back to life. Have been doing so for some time lol I will use the foil tape & i hope that will fix the issue. It’s been blowing that foam for some time so I’ll do it soon I have everything off already minus that part where the buttons for the hazards are. I checked the green and the yellow cables and they seem fine. Not loose Or disconnected. I really appreciate your help. Thanks a lot for replying.

Did you see an improvement in air flow based on the setting? My wife complains that I do not have enough air flow when using the dashboard vents. Since it's my daily driver, I usually close off the right side vents and have only the left side center vent and the driver door vent for me. Anyway, thanks for the video and I look forward to doing this when it's not 105F in my area...but I probably should do it sooner in order to have a more comfortable environment haha
@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't expect improved airflow. I do the same with mine, closing one side off. This just directs the proper temperature air up into the vents, rather than having both hit and and cold air blow into the vents at the same time.
@SFlores1979

@@ColtonsGarage yes, that's what I am hoping will happen: direct the appropriate amount of air to the desired vents. I wonder too, how much debris there may be in the evaporator after 20+ years of life. I may just bite the bullet and take the entire dash off and completely remove the ac box and clean all that up and appropriately re-foam the blending doors. Humble Mechanic has a video on that, but of course, his is a project car, unlike mine that's a daily driver. It's a monumental task but it might be worth getting another 10 years of comfort in the cabin LOL

In other videos, I saw guys removing the sterring wheel to do this. Is it just as easy to do it without removing the steering wheel or was there a reason you didn't? I'm looking to tackle my 2012 jetta this weekend. Any tips would help!

I have a question good sir: Why do the blend doors have the foam covered holes in the first place? If you're able to cover them with solid tape, what is the thinking behind the foam? Also, Thank you for this video. I'm currently diagnosing my A/C Problems and i'm about to work on the actuator to the right in the glove box.
@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage 8 ай бұрын
The design was to allow a small amount of air to still pass through to prevent any whistling sounds that may disturb the driver. I can see the thought process, but even after fully taping the doors, I don't experience it. I suppose in theory, across millions of cars it was an issue, and they had a reason for it. This plagues most older VWs, Audis, and even Porsche uses the same design.

Thanks for this video. I see you didn't mention the green mode selection cable above throttle pedal. Have you ever played with that before? After following your instructions I still don't have hardly any airflow from central windshield dashboard vent. I also don't see any provisions to extend/shorten or alter the green mode selection cable length. I believe the door to be operating as I can select between feet and face zones, just no airflow to passenger side vent or windshield vent.

"I think I finally worked up enough ambition to work on the Jetta" Lmao same when I found out what I had to do to get my HVAC to work again! Good video, fixed it the same way! Also if your AC doesnt cool maybe it's under 5 degrees Celsius outside, mine doesnt kick on under this temperature for whatever reason, VW says it's normal.

That sounds right. You'll also notice that the AC isn't blowing cold either even though the Compressor is on and working. Orange foam coming out of the vents is another tell tale sign. A combination of no heat, no ac, and foam is a dead giveaway thats what it is. Here is another more in depth video that may help you with taking everything apart: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6accqZni7xqqcU

I dont necessarily think so. If you don't see any foam coming out it is less likely to do with the blend doors, especially if it's hot. If the AC system was working you'd still get some cool air coming through. Not hot, hot.
@bealebo22

This is what’s happening on mine. Had the temp control dial right in the middle for lukewarm air since colder in the morning right now but this afternoon went to switch it back to cold air and nothing. It just blows straight hot air now. Worked fine before that which is leading me to believe one of the cables that controls the blend doors has either slipped off the lever that moves it or the cable has snapped. I wouldn’t think degraded foam would make for such a dramatic failure to happen when it was fine the day before. Did you ever take yours apart and what did you find?

I mean this has helped me dramatically with understanding what's going on but you kind of skip some of these parts where yeah you don't want it to be like a 3-hour long video I fully understand that. I love and adore my entire fleet of VAG machines however this foam bullshit in place of solid, secure and reliable doors makes absolutely zero sense to me. A fellow V Dubber told me that these intentional holes punched into blend doors covered by highly porous and weak foam screens essentially that somehow redirect air was selected by my fellow manufacturing engineers to prevent whistling, HA! I wonder how many other hundreds of millions of cars across the globe whistle like an entire symphony of flutes or other wind instruments because of this oversight all the meanwhile providing SUPERIOR, reliable and long term HVAC functionality!!! Danke silly Germans.

Colton; You missed the entire point of making this video SHOWING us how to remove each part, SHOWING us where the hidden screws are Etc. A video allows us to see each action. Instead you just showed us the parts that had been removed by you on the ground. Then once the tape was placed on the doors you showed the dash back in, without SHOWING us how you did that. As a result this video is almost worthless.

so this would be a indicator when the vehicle is not producing any warm, hot, cool, or cold air from any of the vents. In a scenario where it blows only cold air and heat does not work at all, would it still have anything to do with the blend doors in your opinion or am i mistaken ?
@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage 2 күн бұрын
Sounds like you are on the right path. The most tell tale sign will be foam shooting out of your vents. But, just slightly warm air when you have the heat set to hot, or just slightly cool air when you have the AC set to ice cold., would be the second sign.
