In today's video on Colton's Garage we will be fixing the heat and the A/C in the MK4 Jetta. Volkswagen designed the heating/cooling system in many different of their vehicles including Audi's, using a foam to cover the blend doors that ultimately fails over time. This leads to the vehicle not producing any warm, hot, cool, or cold air from any of the vents. One of the tell tale signs that the foam has failed on the blend doors is that you have foam coming out of the vents when turning the heat or the A/C blower on.

Wow, dude, major kudos to you on this video. You seem like a cool cat and I appreciate your sense of humor and the way you keep things simple when you're explaining everything. Rather than going through the half-dozen or so other possible options for why there's no heat (like several other videos on KZbin) you focused on the single project at hand, which is what most of us weekend warriors are doing, or wanting to do, in our driveways/garages. We're not looking for 4-5 steps to fix 6-8 possible problems, we want to know the most likely problem, how to go about remedying it, and how long it might take. You checked every one of those boxes. I'm now subscribed and confident I can tackle this project, which is a big relief because I've been wondering why my dash is continually covered in, well, I didn't know what the hell it was?? Til now. Literally just dusted and through some protectant on the dash and console this past Wednesday and two days later, Friday (Christmas Eve), I started noticing it again. This has been going on for a month or so and the car is almost unbearable to drive if it's 25 degrees or less. So, I'm gonna start the demo, all thanks to you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and all the best to you with your channel! Cheers

I remember foam coming out of my vents a couple of years ago. When cold outside my car blows cold air. When it’s hot outside. The AC blows hot air. So I’m going to check the blend door. On my VW Beetle

"I think I finally worked up enough ambition to work on the Jetta" Lmao same when I found out what I had to do to get my HVAC to work again! Good video, fixed it the same way! Also if your AC doesnt cool maybe it's under 5 degrees Celsius outside, mine doesnt kick on under this temperature for whatever reason, VW says it's normal.

The next time you do a video like this please show where and what we would need to remove. I mean this has helped me dramatically with understanding what's going on but you kind of skip some of these parts where yeah you don't want it to be like a 3-hour long video I fully understand that. But giving us a link to another video I wouldn't mind watching entirely where and what I have to remove.

Did you see an improvement in air flow based on the setting? My wife complains that I do not have enough air flow when using the dashboard vents. Since it's my daily driver, I usually close off the right side vents and have only the left side center vent and the driver door vent for me. Anyway, thanks for the video and I look forward to doing this when it's not 105F in my area...but I probably should do it sooner in order to have a more comfortable environment haha

@ColtonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't expect improved airflow. I do the same with mine, closing one side off. This just directs the proper temperature air up into the vents, rather than having both hit and and cold air blow into the vents at the same time.
@SteveFloresCoach
@SteveFloresCoach 2 жыл бұрын
@@ColtonsGarage yes, that's what I am hoping will happen: direct the appropriate amount of air to the desired vents. I wonder too, how much debris there may be in the evaporator after 20+ years of life. I may just bite the bullet and take the entire dash off and completely remove the ac box and clean all that up and appropriately re-foam the blending doors. Humble Mechanic has a video on that, but of course, his is a project car, unlike mine that's a daily driver. It's a monumental task but it might be worth getting another 10 years of comfort in the cabin LOL

Thanks for this video. I see you didn't mention the green mode selection cable above throttle pedal. Have you ever played with that before? After following your instructions I still don't have hardly any airflow from central windshield dashboard vent. I also don't see any provisions to extend/shorten or alter the green mode selection cable length. I believe the door to be operating as I can select between feet and face zones, just no airflow to passenger side vent or windshield vent.

I have a question good sir: Why do the blend doors have the foam covered holes in the first place? If you're able to cover them with solid tape, what is the thinking behind the foam? Also, Thank you for this video. I'm currently diagnosing my A/C Problems and i'm about to work on the actuator to the right in the glove box.

The design was to allow a small amount of air to still pass through to prevent any whistling sounds that may disturb the driver. I can see the thought process, but even after fully taping the doors, I don't experience it. I suppose in theory, across millions of cars it was an issue, and they had a reason for it. This plagues most older VWs, Audis, and even Porsche uses the same design.

In other videos, I saw guys removing the sterring wheel to do this. Is it just as easy to do it without removing the steering wheel or was there a reason you didn't? I'm looking to tackle my 2012 jetta this weekend. Any tips would help!

I haven't done it on a jetta as new as 2012. But, I don't see a reason to remove the steering wheel. Everything was easily accessible just removing the bottom half of the dash.

That sounds right. You'll also notice that the AC isn't blowing cold either even though the Compressor is on and working. Orange foam coming out of the vents is another tell tale sign. A combination of no heat, no ac, and foam is a dead giveaway thats what it is. Here is another more in depth video that may help you with taking everything apart: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6accqZni7xqqcU

my car just throws hot air like if its on heat is this the same issue? i havent see no foam coming out but compressor kicks on when i move the temp nob it doesnt do anything like if its only on heat
@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I dont necessarily think so. If you don't see any foam coming out it is less likely to do with the blend doors, especially if it's hot. If the AC system was working you'd still get some cool air coming through. Not hot, hot.
@bealebo22

This is what’s happening on mine. Had the temp control dial right in the middle for lukewarm air since colder in the morning right now but this afternoon went to switch it back to cold air and nothing. It just blows straight hot air now. Worked fine before that which is leading me to believe one of the cables that controls the blend doors has either slipped off the lever that moves it or the cable has snapped. I wouldn’t think degraded foam would make for such a dramatic failure to happen when it was fine the day before. Did you ever take yours apart and what did you find?

@ColtonsGarage
@ColtonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
That is kinda strange. It does sound like it could possibly be a blend door issue. If the foam broke down on one of the doors it might not be directing air in the proper direction.

I love and adore my entire fleet of VAG machines however this foam bullshit in place of solid, secure and reliable doors makes absolutely zero sense to me. A fellow V Dubber told me that these intentional holes punched into blend doors covered by highly porous and weak foam screens essentially that somehow redirect air was selected by my fellow manufacturing engineers to prevent whistling, HA! I wonder how many other hundreds of millions of cars across the globe whistle like an entire symphony of flutes or other wind instruments because of this oversight all the meanwhile providing SUPERIOR, reliable and long term HVAC functionality!!! Danke silly Germans.
