Steve's Leaves. Heard about them from Summer. Placed an order. The leaves from Steve's are awesome. Thanks for letting us know!

Loving this series. Could you do an episode (or a few haha) on the classifications/names of plants? Genus, species, subspecies, (what those terms all mean and some examples), etc? That'd be awesome. I have been doing research but still get confused of what all those different terms mean in the hierarchy/familial structure and it'd be awesome to learn more.

I love Orchids! We spent years and tons of $ trying to grow them under lights with all the necessary extras needed to baby them. Finally gave up with a broken heart. Thank you for introducing me to Terrestial Orchids! Headed for 'Steve's Leaves' to find my newest passion. Thank you for all the time and energy you have put into learning and now teaching us all. I am just sad there was no 'KZbin' when I was younger can you imagine all the books I would have had to carry home from the Library on the bus, my arms ache from the thought. Ah progress

Well perhaps you can get some terrestrial orchids now!

When I thought of Orchids I always envisioned those I saw when I visited Granny and all her Homegirls had them on their Windowsills. I just assumed this was an Old Ladies Plant, UNTIL I saw a video from Summer on the Jewel Orchids, Ludisia Discolor!! Man that Baby is Sleek with dark green/black Pinstriped leaves, easy to care for, and ELEGANT!! Easy to propagate and a pleasure to give as a gift. I started with 12 cuttings and kept propagating it and sticking the new growth back into the middle to make it fuller. And now it’s just beautiful. Thanks Summer for educating Me/US. You ONLY Know What You Know. If You’re intimidated by the sheer amount of Specimens, pick an easier 1 like the Ludisia Discolor. Have fun and enjoy the Beauty.

it usually won’t work because they need a mycorrhizae relationship to work :)

Thank you so much for this video! I have a vanilla orchid and I haven’t learned much about it. Definitely going to make it a moss or bark pole to climb!

i think terrestrial orchid are some of the most underrated houseplants, they have a lot of variety from australian greenhood orchids to nun orchids and they all seem to be relatively hardy houseplants (unless you count plants like calypso)

Beautiful plants!!! Didn''t know such type of orchids existed. They are so colorful. I have a very purple Wondering Jew that looks so much like them. Thanks Summer!!

Exactly the topic that was next on my discovery list! I look forward to Thursdays because that's the day I see my sweetheart, who lives in another country... and because I know that when he leaves again in the evening, there's a new post of you waiting for me!

Now this film confirmed what I was thinking about them being happier latching onto a trunk instead of buried in a pot. I think I'm on the right track.

I was so excited to see this! How about their humidity requirements? I noticed that the aerial roots on mine look healthier since I moved my diffuser closer to it 😄

There is other orchids that are terrestrial and a cash crop... Orchis Mascula and Militaris, though they are endangered because of them being a cash crop I believe. They grind the tuber like roots into a flour to make drinks and stretchy Icecream.

The sunflower (Asteraceae) is the largest "flowering" plant family with about 24,000 species. The orchid (Orchidaceae) family is the second largest with about 20,000. Darren should have asked Steve about his leaves.

I'm getting a vibe you almost have an attitude towards phalaenopsis orchids, but as there are lots of us who love them, could you please make a video about them one day? I understand to many 'plant people' phalaenopsis orchids are too 'low class' but you know, they're plants too and deserve a chance. ;) Thanks!

I have Ludisia Discolor and I don't really agree that you should pot it up in regular potting soil. It's too dense and water retentive and the stems of small shoots are rotting off on my plant. The plant is not "taking off" by any means. I have heard of people planting these in spaghnum moss and small grade bark. I have also heard of people planting these in Leca "with two wicks", whatever that means. I'm gonna repot mine in one of these and see how it goes. But I think the reason this guy likes normal potting soil is because he grows the plant in a humid greenhouse. Probably doesn't water it much so no rot. A little different in a normal house.

Should the soil be moist? Should it dry out between watering?

This is very good- could you please do one of peperomia care - for some reason i'm having difficulty caring for them in British winter climate - I have a peperomia schumi red and it went moldy first so I got rid of decay but it still looks sad - we don't get enough sun in UK in the winters and its taking a toll on my plants.
