This is so useful, all the literature just says “don’t do it, send it to the foundry” - thanks for sharing how to make it work and the potential pitfalls!

Doing my first melt, got a small ceramic crucible and saw your other videos about coating it well with borax as I’ve read online so it’s great to see someone do it in person, thanks. Am melting some broken 14k jewelry will try pouring into graphite ingot bar cast.

Thank you for this video. It was extremely informative to someone learning from home. I’m just starting to recycle my fine silver scrap back into usable sheet. I’ve had the same issues with cracking ugly ingots and will now follow your information. My first step will be to clean out my crucible because now I know I have too much borax! Love your videos.

Hi Jeanette - Thanks for the great video. Your video's are so relaxed and wonderful. I'm curious about the No. 2 tip that you used to melt the gold. I have melted gold with my No. 2 tip on My Smith torch (regular Smith not Little Smith) into little ingots without a problem. However, I went to melt some sterling scrap with my No. 2 and had trouble getting it all the way molten. The crucible was filled with scrap and when I have melted gold, it was not filled. IDK if that is a factor or not. Understanding that sterling melts at a lower temp than gold, I'm not sure what I may have done wrong to not get it to totally be molten. Can you offer me any suggestions? I just assumed it wasn't hot enough until I saw your No. 2 tip. Thanks so much!!

Hi Robin! I am so glad that you have been enjoying the videos. :) Sterling does melt at a lower temperature but a full crucible is way too much volume to be able to get fully molten. You should be fine with smaller batches. Let me know how it goes.
