Merrill Ashley (former NYCB principal, now at the Balanchine trust) said that Olga Smirnova was born for Diamonds, and that working with her was one of the highlights of her life. Wow, that’s something…

Smirnova has a marvelous hauter, perfect for this PDD in which she avoids him, ignores him, and makes use of him only when she needs his partnering. This is exactly what the part needs. And what could be better than a Polonaise, particularly when it's danced as lightly and elegantly as here.

This is Olga Smirnova. A Russian ballerina. About her the BBC writes. Because Olga finally had enlightenment, and she declared that she was "against the war with all the fibers of her soul." Then she left Russia to join the Dutch National Ballet. Who received her immediately and with warm embraces. Now she will dance beautifully in Europe. And this is Artem Datsyshyn. A Ballet dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine and winner of international competitions. He will never dance again. He died at the hands of the Russian occupiers. That's all you need to know about culture outside of politics. On the prospects of unity under the auspices of culture. And about the price of war. Which we pay. And which they (Russians) use.
@user-yr2bn5nu5l Жыл бұрын
The video shows Semen Chudin, rather than Artem. Artem danced on Kiev. He was a volunteer. It was his choice - to fight and to die. There was no need to go to the battlefield. Smirnova betrayed her motherland, her teachers, her friends, her theatre.

This is not my favorite couple for this adagio, but what I always like about it is it's slow slow burn; and it seems different with every different couple that presents it. It really thrives on that subtle chemistry that is between them. I know Balanchine didn't want acting, but this adagio always seems to sort of have a story that you would just like to see how it it started and where it ends, and who these people are, and the music is just lovely.

Melissa King Couldnt agree more
@rossi70566 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it must be a complex task for those who film and edit footage of ballets that very much *are* works of group composition, patterns on stage, etc... How to shine the spotlight on so many aspects -- the individuals who dance, their expressions, the subtly and sparseness of the costumes, the intricacy of the steps and the manner by which the artists perform them, such breathtaking lightness... -- while at once maintain the chronology of sequence, as movement and music unravel themselves in real time ? Even with the best technology and a stroke of genius, such a task as this might well challenge the competence of many, even those who, too, come to deeply appreciate the exquisite patterns rendered visible by Balanchine...
@rossi70566 жыл бұрын
All that said, I do agree that the film could have been cut much less often. I am privileged to feel familiar with the patterns, indeed having seen them and loved them previously -- all thanks to a recording that allowed them to be better observed, that is ! =)

They are wonderful dancers. But when it comes to online versions of Diamonds, I still prefer POB's. It just seems to fit them better than it does the Bolshoi, especially when it comes to comfort level with the choreography and spacing on the stage. Also, POB has the best Diamonds costumes of any major company that performs the piece. Including NYCB whose costumes are now the color of "canary yellow" diamonds.

The tempo is typically Russian, varying from ponderous to funereal, and the video filming and editing, beyond horrific. But, even though the Bolshoi may not have come to grips with the Balanchine style, and their approach to Balanchine may be fantastically wrong-headed, what they do dance and how they dance it is simply beautiful. Someone could have coached Smirnova on how to present Balanchine's extreme body angles in space so that her extensions are shown to best advantage, but in the end this performance succeeds on its own terms.

This ballet is THE icon piece of great choreography and masterful dancing thet set american ballet style and standards since was produced 1967. I am not sure what this is supposed to be, but what I am sure is that this is not Balanchine Style. Not at all. It is so faraway from Blanchine, it is not even AFTER Balanchine. This ballet is Blanchine`s homage to Russian ballet. as he use Thaikovsky `s Simphony No. 3 in D major op.29 and Russian imperial ballet Style, not Soviet ballet tradition.

I don't think it's good performance, I agree it is very mannered, but best version I saw in Lopatkina/Zelensky performance. And the biggest mistake to call Tchaikovsky - Balanchine work not Russian. It is Russian, just different time and different approach. Balanchine is real genius, and to dance his choreography right is very difficult
