I mean it said most of what you needed to know in game and he added just a bit that wasn't required (which is why he scored so low). The only thing the game didn't tell us was how to actually set the new heading, or identify which gauges we needed to be monitoring, which Jeff did very well.

True. Instead of writing paragraphs to describe a gauge they did not bother pointing an arrow.

Yes, the instructor does do some wierd things in this flight lesson. But the major thing missing from this flight lesson is making the pilot find and enter the proper codes to fly this ILS approach. That's at least half the work, and the more obscure part for most who have never flown an ILS approach.
@gruanger7 жыл бұрын
I am not a pilot and have never been to a school. Would you mind explaining how to find the codes and enter them on the nav screen please! I just started xplane11 but basically I would like to fully train myself this way.
@KurtisSaiyo4 жыл бұрын
@@gruanger they will be in charts I think. You enter the frequency listed on the chart for the VOR and listen to the morse code to confirm (if available). I'm not a pilot either nor do I have many hours in simulators, but another tutorial explained this. I think you tune using the radio stack on the right. I don't know the range of a VOR, but generally higher frequencies have less range.

The best procedure is 1) tune identify and monitor 2) Turn to place the head of the bearing pointer under your heading 3) center the CDI and maintain it centered. Does this aircraft have a bearing pointer?

With no bearing pointer (like on a real RMI) check for a TO indication then center the CDI and maintain it.

Same here. I've done this lesson probably thirty times and typically get around 50% or 60%. A couple of times I got in the low 80s, 82 at best. Those times I flew at quite a slow airspeed, basically always had the needle glued exactly in the center of the CDI, and intercepted the second radial super fast and accurately (staying at 35 till the needle moved, then moving toward it when it stopped). Honestly I think the lesson is buggy, or way too demanding for the score to be actually useful. Great videos, though, Jeff, really enjoy them. It's nice to hear you explain the concepts in more detail than the "flight school" does and you've got a good sense of humor too!

Hmm I thought planes cpuld navigate on their own. Like cars or walking Imagine a VOR in every major and minor location in the city. Or any amount of infrastructure like that snd not just sign posts and billboards. I thought it was like a more complex sextant but instead of stars it used magnetic fields and some weird contraption for altitude So how did the bombers do it back in the day Isn't there a a slide rule computer (analog like a plastic scale) that they still make pilots do calculations with for their exam ? Question: Is it wise to decommission all the VORs, or is the maintenance expense to prohibitive to keep them in service; even as a backup in case GPS fails?
@Tim_31008 жыл бұрын
As a flight simmer myself and ex online atc controller on a private network. In my view it's going to happen the chances of a complete gps failure are incredibly small the satellites are pretty well protected in their orbits they get minor impact damage so does any other satellite (just read what nasa says in documentaries etc) plus gps is also being improved rapidly and it will soon be even more accurate and pilots still have VFR as backup. In terms of cost as equipment gets older it does get considerably more expensive to maintain and if new technology is there that can do the same role and more then it makes financial sense ok in the short term it's going to be expense to install but it will be cheaper in maintaining for years to come eventually recooping install cost

If VORs are going out of use, what is used to map waypoints for GPS navigation? RDB's? What will this mean for aircraft that are not equipped with GPS?
@jfavignano8 жыл бұрын
waypoints/intersections are completely fabricated now and used for RNAV (random navigation) I think this pretty much puts a solid foot down that airplanes will be required to have at least GPS for navigation. I have to say VOR's don't seem to be going anywhere as the FAA still favors them. They are being phased out slowly though.

This game is anoying me as it does not tell you how to tune your aircraft to VOR's i've been all over youtube and can not find it!
@Kcwiro7 жыл бұрын
you tune them via the nav part of your radio ... using skyvector will not always work though since sometimes the in-game frequencies are incorrect ... you tun the frequency ... make sure your on NAV vs GPS ... and you rotate the radial until the 'TO' shows up... TO - means you are flying 'TO' the VOR 'VOR's .... I keep the new frequency of the next radial on standby so when I intersect the current VOR I switch over and re-align... hopefully that helps you a little bit =\ also VOR's have a maximum range they can be picked up from ... the VOR system is being decommissioned in real life so don't expect to have them available in less traveled areas... I for one am learning to use VOR's first before I worry about my GPS as honestly that is plenty easy to figure out if you can hit a few buttons and enter the airport ID code...
