Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responded to a conveyor belt fire at the JEA Northside Generating Station. Upon arrival to the plant, the elevated conveyor belt had heavy black smoke from the middle of the conveyor belt. This belt is used to transport coal with product also on fire.
Command on scene quickly called for a second alarm as access to this fire was tricky as the conveyor was elevated anywhere from 20 ft high to 200+ ft high. Lines had to be extended up arial ladders and advanced forward. Multiple points of attack were established. Water sources were good and established on opposite ends of this fire.
At the top of the conveyor was what was called a "transfer house"...at the time of the fire, the building was low on product, but there was much dust particles which presented possible explosion should the fire reach it. So a water curtain was established at the top of the conveyor to prevent this.
Walkways were thin, temperatures were unusually high for February, and crews had to work hard to put this fire out. The fire was called under control at about 1 hour and 15 mins in.
