I love the Striker 4! I used it for the entire season last year with great success, mostly for Pike, Browns and Pan Fish. I really enjoyed seeing how you used it to manage the chase of the Lake Trout, that was very informative. My plan is to really target Lake Trout this year using a lot of the techniques I have seen in your videos. I have had limited Lake Trout success in the past and by watching these videos I could easily identify the adjustments I will make to help this year. Thanks!

My one dig on the striker is the size of the screen. I find I'm bending over during a chase trying to get as close to the screen as possible. I think I'm going to spring for the Helix 7 this Christmas. I fished with someone who had it last year and it's ridiculous. I'm also planning on doing a full video on the features and settings of the Striker 4 as there are a lot of tweaks that can be made for certain situations. Good luck this year and let me know how it goes!

This is a bit of an older video so I've changed things up a bit since then. But I use 32"-36" medium action rods. I like a little length and backbone to set the hook on fish down deep but a soft enough rod to absorb the head thrashing near the hole. I also use 15#-20# braided line as long as I'm in a heated shanty. It doesn't have any stretch so it is good for setting the hook on deep fish and getting a good connection.

@dcfarouk5 жыл бұрын
Great Video, keep making them. I was wondering as a beginner, I can see no target separation. once the fish at the bottom it melts down into the bottom on the screen. Is this normal for ice fishing sonar? would it be any different with a different fish finder? I think because the fish disappear into the bottom, you can never tell if there is any fish before any of them chase your jig, right? you only see it while it is coming, so this fish finder wont help you to see fish ahead. am I correct? last questions, can this transducer be used on ice before drilling a hole to tell if there is any fish?? I saw some Chinese made ones claim they can. thank you
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
I find if a fish in still in the sonar cone and is along the bottom you can tell it is on the bottom as it is not the straight line like when there are no fish. You will usually see them as more of a "blob" on the bottom.. not the straight flat line. If the line goes straight flat they have probably moved outside of the cone of the sonar. As for reading through the ice sometimes.. if there is not a lot of air bubbles, snow or debris in the ice, you can get a reading of the sonar through the ice. I'll notice it when I take the sonar out of the hole when fighting a fish but it is aiming down through the ice you can still see the fish fighting on the sonar.

Great video! How do you have the gain and frequency set? Thank you!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
Very good question! It is not something I addressed. I find that every situation seems to be a little different depending on the water and surroundings. I like the adjustment on a Vexilar because it is super easy to adjust quickly and makes a bigger difference. I will adjust the gain or sensitivity (as some units will call it) so that I don't have much feedback that is not a fish or my lure but will show my lure very clearly with a brighter more orange/red color. I don't have the ability to change frequency on the Vexilar but the Garmin does have the ability to choose frequency. I honestly left the frequency on the Garmin at default and feel like I haven't needed to change it. I found I didn't see as much of a difference on the Garmin as I adjusted the sensitivity... but the same guideline follows. Eliminate noise but see your lure clearly. The deep you go the more you may have to turn it up.

Check out our Advanced Techniques video as I go into more detail on the transducer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3KbdpuZi8ZsjJI But essentially, you use the bracket that comes with it, remove the suction cup and run the cable in the notches provided in the bracket. @@WhiteDogTrailCompany What's confusing me is you can mark cisco at 100 foot bottoms but the lakers hardly showed on the 80 foot bottom on your screen before they shot up. I still-fish a lot in the open season and would like to see trout holding snug or close to the bottom before I make the plunge into a new fishfinder. I don't see any bumps or uneven edges on the bottom where these good size lakers were holding and came up from like I saw in the 'Jigging Up A Yard Long Laker' video I recommended to you. Peter Colin in that video points to the very noticeable jagged bumps on the 90 foot bottom on his FF screen and says those are lakers. I don't see anything like that prior to the lakers coming up in your video. Am I missing something? I'm guessing that the 300 rms(watts) his fish finder has versus the 200 rms the Striker 4 has might make a difference. Or, more than likely, a few adjustments on your unit will show the lakers just as well as his.

I almost always leave my bait about 10 -12 feet off the bottom. You want to see them rise up to it and then you take it away. I fish in clear water so they can see the bait from far away... so leaving it off the bottom will draw them in from farther away and when you get a fish rising up to it you know they're interested. Thanks for the great video! I'm new to laker fishing, so far has not iced one yet. Do you usually tip sucker meat on the hook as a lot anglers do? Have you ever tried that? Thanks again!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
I don't tip the hook because I am not trying to entice a laker to bite a bait that is not moving that much. I really only have the laker chase the bait and I want it to look as much like the real bait as possible. If I were jigging without sonar or not making them chase I might tip it with some other bait. I'm not sure if you have seen our other videos but we have a couple of videos of how we do our jigging. Check this one out... It is very detailed in how we do it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3KbdpuZi8ZsjJI If you want to start with the basics video start with this one instead and then watch the previous one linked kzbin.info/www/bejne/mV7JnGp7j76Webc

Excellent work just found your videos and immediately subscribed! Question: What knot do you like to use with your Vibrato Jigs (I use them for Lakers and Whities on L. Simcoe) Comment: Turn your scroll speed to max on the Garmin and other similar models. Especially if you do not have Flasher or A-cone type tech on it. I find it avoids the visual “History Lag” Thx and keep the great content coming!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for joining us! :) I use a clinch knot for connecting all of my baits. I have my Garmin set to "Fast" on the scroll speed... there is one speed above that. I'll try it out when we get out on the ice this year. I am jealous of the fish that Simcoe has... we don't have any whites and our lakers are more plentiful but much smaller. A big fish for my lakes is 28".

Great video! Right now I have the Striker 4. Im looking at buying the kit that comes with the bag, float, mount, battery etc... Still unsure if I should buy that ice ducer lol Do you have the kit Im talking about with float? Does it hold the transducer nice and straight? No probs? The ice ducer is $150 by itself haha crazy! Wondering if ice ducer is that much better than the ducer it comes with?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
Yes.. I have the portable kit. I don't use the ice ducer.. I only use the standard transducer with the float. It does hold the transducer nice and straight and I have had no problems with it. I honestly wouldn't spend the money on the ice transducer. At least try it out with the standard transducer.. but I think you'll find there is no need for the ice ducer.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Ive used my striker last year on the ice and had no probs with the ducer it comes with. Made up my own setup using a plastic ammo box haha. The bag and floater will be much better. Think Ill stick to just the portable kit without the ice ducer. I mean, it cant be any better than what we have already. Ive never had a probem.

.Great video, White Dog! I got a little confused with the screen graphics. Can you track your 1/2 oz. jig movement at the 60-70 foot level? By the way, I saw your West Canada Creek video and know the exact location you were fishing. Try walking upstream next time.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
Yes... you can easily see your jig movement even at 100 feet deep. And you can see a good separation between fish and your lure even at that depth (unless the fish is right on it... then the mark gets a little darker. I grew up fly fishing the West Canada... it feels like home to me :) I don't make it out that way very often anymore but it is always great fishing. My problem when I go is figuring out where I want to go because there are so many options. I'll make it a point to explore upstream some more in the coming years. Thanks!

@@browntrout611 Oh! I have more than one video in that area. The older video from a few years ago (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnq6cqd-fc6Yj9U) I was below the riffle I usually fish. In the more recent video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqCTp4mXi8iYhbM) I catch many more fish Euro Nymphing in that riffle than below. That one was cool because of a storm that blew through too.
@browntrout6115 жыл бұрын
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany The next riffly area upstream beyond the bend can be excellent. Not as many trout as the lower area you're describing and fishing but good quality trout in fewer numbers. A good white fly hatch there too except when National Grid runs it high, which kills the hatch. Unfortunately the unpredictable water levels have hurt a great stream in recent years.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany5 жыл бұрын
@@browntrout611 That's good to know.. I prefer finding fewer but bigger trout. I completely agree with you on how the fluctuating water levels hurt the river. I would love to see actual wild fish in this river but not sure much of that will ever happen with the amount of stocking and water level fluctuations.

The only drawback to the otherwise amazing Striker 4 is I noticed on the screen it has a problem marking a laker when it is holding snug or close to the bottom. At the five minute mark you'll notice the laker comes up seemingly out of nowhere from a flat bottom since the screen didn't show the fish until it moved up towards the bait. I think this is normal for most fishfinders unless you buy a high end Furuno or Hummingbird with a feature called 'white line' which is suppose to help with separating a fish holding close to the bottom. With the lower priced models like the Striker 4 and my own older fishfinder the fish probably has to be so many inches off the bottom before the transducer will pick it up and mark it. Other than that this Striker 4 is a killer for the price.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany4 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I'm not honestly sure. I see them "along" the bottom often as the line tends not to be as flat and fluctuates a little. I fish a pretty aggressive style for lakers so I don't really care unless they are rising to my bait... those are the fish I'm really looking for. When it gets tough I have to employ other techniques but I'm pretty sure I can tell when fish are there.. at least most of the time. I'm probably investing in the Helix 7 for next year... can't friggin wait!!!
@browntrout6114 жыл бұрын
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Check out the Furuno fcv-628 too(about $550). It is suppose to have a great 'white line' feature. I learned from a few gurus over the years that you can catch lots of trout still fishing on 30 to 55 foot bottoms even in the heat of August. What you do during the ice season can be done during the entire regular season. More trout species besides lakers hold on the bottom below the thermocline than anyone can imagine. Certain lakes and ponds have enough oxygen at those depths for trout. One August day three of us caught 27 browns, rainbows and brookies in 85 degree heat in a few hours on a 40 foot bottom in a lake everyone else had given up on during the heat of the summer. We had many days like that.

White Dog: Check out a youtube video titled, 'Jigging Up A Yard Long Lake Trout' by Peter Collin. He points out on his old, discontinues Lowrance fishfinder where the bottom holding lake trout are(small, jagged humps, 85 feet down) and the action when they move and hit. Your videos and his are the best when it comes to jigging up lake trout without a $500 plus fishfinder.
