me. my mom and i joined a strict church called the bible missionary church. i was not allowed to wear pants and shorts would sent me to the depths of hell. i had to wear dresses 3 inches below the knee and 3/4 length sleeves. i was not allowed to cut my hair. when i left the church at 16 my hair was to my knees. i was not allowed to wear silver or gold or makeup. the kids who were born into the church were allowed to wear makeup but if i put sheer powder on my face i was forced to go to the altar to pray. one year at church conference all of us kids went to the open chapel to sing i decided to sing a gospel song recorded by elvis. we were not allowed to listen to music other than hymns sung at church and a few church approved recorded al

I can relate to the toxicity in which Jill was raised. Having survived a horrifically abusive childhood, I’ve had to unlearn many traits and learn how to recognize abuse in every form. The trauma that comes with lives like Jill’s, you don’t know how to spot those people but even if you spot them, you don’t know how to say no to them either. It’s a traumatic experience to find yourself in, which then leads you to relationships with people that are just like your first abuser. I find myself 16 years into a marriage, coming to terms with the fact that I am married to someone that is the reflection of my birth mother. Abusive behavior is never a personality trait. It took me so long to learn that I don’t have to just accept what someone else offers. I can say no. And that my no is more than sufficient. Great discussion to open up Be!! ♥️

Michelles story about mowing the lawn in her bikini is particularly disturbing bc no one is thinking that her neighbors husband is a grown man who shouldnt be leering at a teenager rather its the childs responsibility to protect the adult from their inappropriate behaviors. I think it's remarkable how these conservatice groups (of any belief or faith) have the view that women are incapable of basic things like work or making household decisions and yet they give them an incredible amount of power from childhood to be able to sway their moral character. What it really tells me is that (some) men are the weak ones who fear what they see is the true power of women and will do anything they can on a large scale to keep them feeling small so they can't discover their true potential which they perceive as a threat to their hold on power. They are man-made. The teachings from the Bible have brought me nothing but good positive things and has brought me more freedom then anything else. Nothing man-made, man regulated or mandated by men brings true freedom. The individuals who claim that the teachings are ordained by God will burn in a special place in hell unless they confess to being deceitful. The money was shady , the girls book tour promoting the book supposedly written by them ? That was a best seller among tweens and it's never mentioned . If it wasn't for Jimbob reporting her income to the IRS they could have had Medicaid but they weren't low income once they found out Jimbob was reporting the kids income they never got . The husbands they thought they were marrying into money and surprise not only are they not paid but they can't get free medical because of it .

Unfortunately the money aspect or lack of was probably TLC’s boo-boo. They didn’t want to pay all the kids. When the show started out they didn’t have to pay the kids. They only had to,pay the parents. But as the kids grew into adults the show should have started paying them. But didn’t and it was up to the kids to talk to Jim and ask for some money from him. Sadly that fell through and it wasn’t till legal stuff to do with money landed with Jill & Derek that Derek went through all their finances & realised Jim’s had put they were getting x amount on money when they weren’t. No one had been transparent with each other. It’s sad 😔 that theming happened the way they did.

Once they reached adulthood one by one being part of a cult like family they didn’t speak up and TLC failed to offer them new contracts with pay. However also Jim Bob did nothing to speak up for them either.

I am thankful Jill found refuge in Derick. I am glad she was able to hear that she is worthy to speak out about how she was hurt and that it wasn’t ok. She can have the sweet attributes of her Mom. However she doesn’t have to take on her weakness. Michelle cannot fight for herself. She doesn’t have the tools. She can only think as far as she has been allowed to think. I noticed Jim Bob saying “She didn’t know how guys think” To me that was tell tell about him. Not all boys think the way Jim Bob said. He taught me something else too. When I was reading her book and read that while her and Jessa were being made to defend Josh on tv he was sitting in the room listening in and was making jokes when filming was going on I felt so terrible for them. Jill had just given birth and Jessa was pregnant and it was obvious from their body language they didn’t want to be there bringing up what happened. Josh was being sheltered while 2 of his victims were being made to defend him because Jim Bob cared more about the show being saved than their wellbeing.

I was so angry that these parents had the audacity to go on a tv show as an example of Christian faith and family while actively dealing with Josh’s troubles and the girls’s trauma. The hypocrisy, the ego, the hubris of Jim Bob is astounding and disgusting. It angers me as a believer and as a person of common sense and compassion. As a mother I kind of feel for her. I know that voice can come across as shmarmy, but I can hear how deeply she believes in and means what she's saying. But just the thought that she could have married anyone, she could have had a much happier, much more free life. I've been the naive teenager that was effectively brainwashed by my then husband, but thankfully we're divorced. I believe Michelle has much more to say and that she doesn't agree with her husband nearly as much as she seems to.

I think what really bothered me was how Jim Bob made the girls feel like being molested was their fault due to what they wore. Guys should be held responsible for their behavior. Girls have a right to wear comfortable clothing. Cheerleading does not stir desires in the normal person. Only purvs feel that way.

Well, modesty is important as a form of self-protection against the evil that runs through some boys’/men’s minds. Girls/Women cannot be responsible for boys’/men’s thoughts or actions, but protecting ourselves is something we can control. While evil doesn’t care what we wear, because some of them will act out no matter, taking that small step can abate some of it. Even though these days safety is often an illusion. Being proactive is better. Girls/Women absolutely must learn self-defense. It really should be a required course in schools. Because we have all come across at least one boy/man who do think it is their “right” to “have” us. One of the basic lessons in self-defense is “S.I.N.G.” which stands for “Solar plexus, Instep, Nose, Groin.” These are specific areas to target on your attacker when defending yourself. You may remember that acronym from Sandra Bullock's character Gracie in the movie Miss Congeniality. It is a shame parents don’t ingrain in their sons’ brains that their desires must be controlled. Their behavior has consequences. And enforce those consequences for all inappropriate behavior, even minor stuff. Because when done early and often, that teaches a lesson that will stay with them through their lives. Teach kids personal responsibility… and respect… for others and for the law. Also teach them about being by of service to others, especially those who can do nothing for them, out of familial and civic responsibility. Out of the public eye, because it isn’t about them. Sadly, too many people refuse to do this. When taking them with you when you volunteer (at the appropriate ages) at food banks, homeless shelters, church, picking up litter, etc… isn’t that difficult. It teaches them humility and empathy. Which is sorely lacking these days.

My thoughts, not that anyone asked, but anyhoo... 1. Michelle loves babies. Only babies. She herself said once a baby is weaned, it's assigned a buddy. She gets bored with the baby after that, so she gives it to an older kid. Then she gets to start all over again. 2. There's videos of when JB and Michelle tell their kids that she's knocked up again. The younger ones look happy. But if you look at the older kids' faces, it's like they just go blank. They know it's going to be another 'buddy' and more chaos. And as soon as that baby is given a buddy, they older kids know their parents are already getting busy to make another. 3. I think Michelle loves the attention of being pregnant and each kid is like a mom trophy. Now that her baby factory got shut down by menopause, I've read that she's jealous of her pregnant daughters/daughters-in-law. 4. Michelle has said wives must be available to their husbands whenever he wants to throw down. By that logic, they didn't have all these kids because they wanted them. It was because any time JB wanted to get it on, she had to oblige, and kids were just the result. 5. There is a reason that not even 100 years ago, many women died in childbirth and many babies didn't survive childhood. Women aren't meant to pop out babies over and over for a span of 30 years. I know of a woman who had 5 kids, is now in her 40s, and is getting osteoporosis. Five pregnancies leached the calcium from her bones. Imagine 19 pregnancies! Michelle is going to sneeze and break a rib.

I remember going to Sunday school when I was about 13. I had been going to the same church since I was about 9, but they had recently got a new pastor & new members to the congregation. Some of these new members were in my Sunday school class, including the leader. This was just your basic Christian church in Southern California. So one week I wear a summer dress to Sunday school. It wasn’t the least bit revealing. My parents monitored my wardrobe closely. This was the 80’s, and I wasn’t allowed to wear the Madonna look or the off the shoulder sweatshirt like Flashdance. So that week at Sunday school my teacher tells me I’m causing the boys in my class to sin by what I was wearing. Hearing the "defrauding" and "nike!" part disgusted me the most knowing the cruel irony about the environment that birthed a monster like Josh, I used to be part of a fundie community for several years and as a hormonal teenager I was really repressed as well so even though my female church friends dressed modestly I was still terrified of looking at them a certain way because it would lead to the "impure thoughts" I was told would damn me. I've been out for more than four years now for different reasons but knowing I'm now damned no matter what for my apostasy is what led most of the shame to go away and now I can look at scenes like the party footage you showed without having those "lustful" thoughts, clothing makes little difference to how women are treated and young girls are probably more in danger in these fundie churches than they are in other places considering how much abuse is covered up.

I'm so glad that Jill and Derek were able to talk about the injustice done to them. They did not dishonor her parents they simply stood up and tried to fight against the wrongdoing done to them. I feel like her father had lied to all his children and the world stating that his children were a blessing from God, and yes they are, but it seems to me he considered them a blessing for making him wealthy!! I used to watch the show for years and loved it. The purity was beautiful and refreshing. Now, all I can do is think back and wonder what was real and what wasn't. Ultimately the only person responsible for Josh's behavior is Josh, but Michelle and JimBob have to accept some responsibility. They created an environment of shame which facilitated the silence of the sisters. They also raised Josh to think he has no self-control, and that his lust is natural and the responsibility of the target. It never would have occurred my brother to look at me the way he looked at other women. It never would have occurred to me that I would need to concern myself with sparking his attraction. that idea just never would have occurred to anyone in our family no matter what anyone was wearing. It is possible to regulate one's own conduct. They could have raised Josh to control himself and not see all females, even related females, as sexual prey. Who knows how that effected his brain development? He should never be allowed to be alone with girls or women again. He may have been a pedophile no matter what. Or his inappropriate attraction to young girls may have grown from a seed planted by the idea that his sisters must dress modestly lest he have uncontrollable urges. That's a self-fullfilling prophecy. Not all prophecies are in the bible. Luckily you don't have to subjugate women, enable men to prey on women, or obstruct the independence of your children to be a good Christian. The IBLP is a dangerous extremist organization that is actively attempting to influence a fundamental constitutional change to create a religious autocracy.

Very little is said in these comments about the long term damage to a woman's body after 19 pregnancies / births. This damage often does not occur before the woman's menopause or even later. But it can be quite severe, and irreversible. Doctors will never consider it wise to give birth so many times.

As an ex Christian who was in a very conservative community until adulthood, theres a diet culture mentality around purity and modesty, which ends up teaching young boys that they will fail at being moral because (young) girls are too pretty. When all you have to do to get back in God's favor is beg for forgiveness, you don't actually have compassion or empathy towards anyone, you just gotta seem like you're "trying". Telling girls not to dress a certain way because it's sinful or 'defrauding' sounds like the beginning of blame-shifting. Further as the story went from what was in the news, instead of finally calling the police on Josh, the Duggars took him to 'counseling' or whatever it was through IBLP. In so doing, they stifled all conversation about his transgressions at home, any possible declaration among all the family that his horrible behavior was sinful, wrong and abusive, AND any thoughts of the well-being of the daughter's who were assaulted. I'm glad that Jill escaped from this, and by extension, that Derick did not have to be tied to this as much as the others in his role as an in-law. Furthermore, that the Duggar children WERE NOT PAID, is a form of child labor and indentured servitude. Also, I'm sorry, but I cannot resist saying this: Jim-Bob Duggar is full of shit and IBLP is a cult, tied to the so-called "Quiverfull" movement.

I watched a few episodes over the years, & wondered how they could afford to have so many children. I remember the mother, on 1 episode, expressing her joy that people would leave donated children's clothes on her doorstep. I thought it was a pretty sad life for the kids. Not being provided for, normally, & depending on donations from strangers to survive, all the while the parents popping out a new kid every 9 months. Just sickening how the parents basically forced the older ones into a life of servitude, & pushed the cult mentality of women being the lesser sex, with little rights. &, then to top it off, exploiting them to the public without a penny for their trouble. Despicable. &, then to do nothing about the SA going on with Josh, & allowing it to spread to other daughters. I don't know how the parents sleep at night.

A very good friend of mine, was a thrilled follower of this show. When she first told me about them. I watched 1 show, when the first kid got married. They watched a video from creepy dad telling them what marriage was all about, or something like that. That told me everything I needed to know. Discernment!
