@ViardotVSGrisi I agree, Ito was very artistic in her own way. I would have given her 6.0 for technical and 5.9 for artistic for this program, especialy compared to her competitors in this event. I would give Trenary 5.6 for technical and 5.8 for artistic, only not lower since the field was so weak and Yamaguchi skated badly that night so she compared favorably to everyone else (by even next year she would have been buried with this kind of skating though).

Figures were part of the sport then so it doesnt matter what if they hadnt been. Jill was a great package of very good jumping, spinning, and excellent style, carriage, elegance, and choreogarphy. She was a worthy champion of this title.

@ViardotVSGrisi More on this: I think once Midori got the label "needs to work on being artistic" there was little she could do to get out of it. This is, ultimately, a sport where reputation counts for a lot. Trenary was a smart girl who knew her strengths, and she had a strategy to win. This long program is one of her better ones (skating wise, im not looking at the choreo) and she took this competition for sure. Her accomplishments sadly did not survive well.

Yeah since lets face it there wasnt any way Lebedeva or Cook could beat this! This was beautiful.

I never understood why Jill Trenary was considered such a great artist. Were these the same people that made Paula Abdul a star?

LOL the equation is beyond ignorant they dont even compare have you ever watched figure skating??? she was lovely both technically and artistically and this was 1990 so skating has changed alot and she beat midori because this was the last year that figures were skated and midori was too low to catch her anyway educate yourself best wishes!

@russianskatingfan I think there is a lot of truth in what you have said. I look at Midori's work and she was no ballerina. Her body type was more athletic, bigger legs, and she did not have the flexibility of some of the leaner girls. But her movements I found always very poetic: how she follows her hands and she really means it... there's a lot of real beauty there. Her programs may have not been "sophisticated", but they were certainly very artistic.

My guess is that those 5 judges marked that way in order to "lock" Jill in for 2nd place in the LP, giving absolutely no mathematical chance for Lebedeva and Cook to sneak in for 2nd in the LP.

@nashleigh79 I agree. Denise a whole 9 years earlier even had better jumps, much better spins, better basic skating, more speed and power, and better more interesting choreography. Watch Denise's free skate from the 1980 Olympics, it also easily trumps this. Jill wasnt an impressive World Champion, she won only due to the figures.

Lol at the interview with Lisa Sergeant at the end. I love how she describes herself as tiresome.

I hadn't noticed that before..."I've been very tiresome" lol

@ViardotVSGrisi She was very pretty and back then it seemed that is what made people think you were really artistic. Just look at how high Witt was scored in artistic scores when her leg extensions and toepoint were even worse than Ito or Harding for instance, but oh she is so gorgeous she must be artistic. Trenary did atleast have nice line and extensions (not as good as someone like Kadavy though), but her choreography was always too strange for me to consider her very artistically great.

This program was pedestrian and ridiculous at best. she shouldn't have won.
@troyaturner19799 жыл бұрын
This LP sucks and Jill is is a below average skater. She only won due to figures and looking like a model. she wasn't artistic at all.

Troy Turner - well stated. When compulsories went, so did Jill's career. I saw an interview that Jill did on US tv at the Albertville Olympics where her opinion was that they should restrict the number of triple jumps in the Ladies LP to 4. Jill could not handle the ladies becoming more athletic in their skating. Midori revolutionized ladies figure skating (Scott Hamilton quote at the 1991 Lalique tourney which Midori won).

I also thought she was marked too generously in the SP. Neske and Grossmann arguably should've placed ahead of her. If she had placed 6th in the SP instead of 5th, Ito would've won the gold.

I love Midori!!! I wish she would have won! Jill is so so.
