Yum! I have a recipe from 1960’s Joy of Cooking that I use. I first used it to lure my kiddos out of bed on a cloudy school morning. I sprinkled cinnamon on top. They awoke cheerfully to the smell of cinnamon in the air. I had another oatmeal recipe - “breakfast cookies” - a modified version of the recipe in the lid of Quaker Oats. I cut the sugar by 50% and added shredded carrots and a handful of mini nestles morsels and cinnamon. My sons recently shared it with my daughter-in-law as a happy childhood memory (I felt hugged). I just told them, recently, that there was a whole carrot in there. They felt like I had tricked them. My one son hated carrots. I smiled as I held my sweet granddaughter and told her mommy and daddy would trick her too. She’s just too tiny to be disagreeable yet. Wait until I tell them how I’d turn the clocks 2 hours ahead once or twice a winter and let them watch a movie. Then send them to bed an hour past their 8:00 bedtime. It was dark and actually only 7 pm. When I took a long hot bubble bath, they knew it was bed time and didn’t argue. Sneaky but hard earned on a winter night. Should I feel guilty? Nah. Don’t judge me if your kids believe in the bunny and Santa. Teehee

Jill 4 Today Jill, I don’t see the recipe in the comments. Help! My apples are peeled and ready to go!😁
@Jill4Today5 жыл бұрын
@@lisagoranson6279 here you go: 1960’s Apple Crisp Apple Mixture: 8 medium-sized apples (equals about 8 cups) peeled, cored and sliced* 1/3 cup white granulated sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup melted margarine ( I use butter when I make it for us) (I used reduced-fat because a person eating this is lactose intolerant)* 1/3 cup dried cranberries or raisins 1/4 cup water Crisp Mixture: 1 1/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Pinch of salt 1/2 cup melted reduced-fat margarine (I use butter when I make it for us) Instructions Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl add the apples, cranberries (if used), cinnamon, sugar, flower, vanilla, margarine and water. Mix completely until apples are coated well. In a 8x8” baking dish, arrange the apple and cranberry mixture. In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, baking powder and melted margarine. Mix well your fingers or spoon. Make sure the oats have absorbed all the liquid. Sprinkle evenly over the apple filling. Bake in preheated oven for 40 - 45 minutes, or until the crisp mixture is golden and crisp and the apples are cooked to tender. Use a sharp knife to check for done-ness of apples. Notes: I used a combination of granny smith, Jonathan gold and honey crisp apples. During the cooking process, I took a sharp knife and cut into the apples/crisp mixture. This allowed the apples to sink down into the juices and mix the crisp just a bit into the apples. According to our neighbors, it rocked! I will make this recipe again but forget the 9x13 pan…I’ll make it in the 8x8 from now on. You certainly could use the larger pan and it would make for a larger crisp when serving a crowd.

Your 1960's apple crisp looks so much like what I always made for my little family! My mother's 'crisp' was something where she melted butter in a dish, then poured in a pancakey type batter and topped with fruit. Then the fruit would cook, the batter would bubble up in the butter and bake up around the fruit. Yours turned out so pretty, no matter how much it seemed to bother you. Now I think I need to go purchase some apples! LOL...just a few weeks ago I was buried alive in processing the apples from our 'Chehalis' tree. Hahaha! Thank you for the lovely video, Jill (and Director!).

Lmao, you are fricken awesome! Love your honesty and appreciate your candid remedy and you are funny as all heck. I am making your recipe apples cut smaller and using BUTTER because if you want good flavor and you are baking you really cant fudge on good ingredients espec regardjng fat to water ratios...it really is a delicate balance sometimes you just need to figure out alternatives to butter or oil maybe using applesauce..my best friend was in a cabin with her family and entire extended family snowed in and couldnt get to a nearby store ended up using mayonnaise in place of butter and eggs in a cake mix then made cupcakes with mayo also.pretty neat.

Well, Jill, you anticipate my every need! Literally, I've been craving apple crisp for a few days. I guess it's a natural when autumn begins. I couldn't find the recipe I used before, I think maybe it was from Good Housekeeping (?) but it was pretty basic. So I started looking on KZbin, and coincidentally you posted it on the same day I was looking. When I saw you making this, not only was I drooling, but I remembered this is pretty much the same recipe! I'm making it today, and I'm going to try using a vegan margarine like Earth Balance, and reduce the sugar as needed as my husband is diabetic. Thanks again, Jill!
@Jill4Today6 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm happy to hear you like the sound of this recipe -- it really is good! I cannot believe all the 60's recipes I have tucked away in my file box. I looked through it the other day. It's been years since I made any of them and decided it was time to pull some of them out. I used Earth Balance (light) and it worked really well. I was concerned when I melted it because it is mostly water but it worked! Be sure to add that extra tablespoon of flour.
@Bubbagoose186 жыл бұрын
Okay, I made this, and it was awesome. Used Earth Balance as the shortening, a combination of three different types of apples. This was a huge winner. My family loved it, many compliments. I think next time it'll go into a 9 x 13" as it was really packed into the 8 x 8". I think it was because of how dense it was in the 8 x 8" that I had the same issue as you, with the apples not being done enough. I, too, poked some holes in the topping to let the apples have more juice, baked it about 6 minutes longer, and it was perfect. Thanks for another winning recipe Jill!
@Jill4Today6 жыл бұрын
Yes -- the 9x13 is the way to go with this recipe. It's the size pan I've used in the past and I sort of got messed up when I thought I was splitting the recipe. I used the Earth Balance as well, but mine was the light version. I am so glad you liked the recipe. It is definitely a keeper!

Your apple crisp looks delicious and healthy. Mine isn't as healthy as I don't use oats, raisins or cranberries. I just use sliced apples with a sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter crumble on top. But you've convinced me to also add a little vanilla to the topping now! So kind of you to treat the neighbors! ❤️ (Did you use the little foxes white mixing bowl? My favorite!) I like your hair too! They are McIntosh, a very hearty apple tree. Of course I haven't been up there in about ten+ years. My traveling day's are probably over now.

I've never used water in my apple crisp...nor do I see any reason to. But since you are using a fluid, try using Apple juice instead. Also wondering why you omitted greasing/spraying the pans? Is that something you just don't do, and if so, why not?
@Jill4Today5 жыл бұрын
I didn't see a need to grease the pan -- the crisp came out very easily. That's a great idea about using apple juice instead of water.

@@Jill4Today: Okay about not buttering the baking pan/dish, because we all have our preferences. I just copied my mother's way because that's the way I learned, and have been doing it that way since the since the 1950's. Old habit's are hard to break/change. Your crisp looked very tasty and very nicely put together.

hi dear, watching from UK! I was born in 61! marg is not healthy due to trans fats (cancer causing), so best to avoid! butter is a whole natural food! u could use coconut oil or similar?
@Jill4Today5 жыл бұрын
Hello UK! So happy to see you come along for the ride. You are right about margarine. I needed to use it for our neighbor who cannot eat dairy. We use butter. I'm not sure if coconut oil would work for this recipe. But it's a good idea. Thanks so much for watching and writing in.

Jill, I just wanted to thank you for this recipe, and to tell you not to be so hard on yourself lol.. Fruit flies/Drain flies are as annoying as anything, I get it. I'm adding this recipe to my Thanksgiving playlist btw.. Really appreciate your tips on dealing with the smaller dish and how you dealt with that. I'll be making all sorts of fun things this season, and now you're recipe is on my list too ;) Thanks again! Here's my playlist so far if anyone sees it and finds some inspiration from it. kzbin.info/aero/PLc98SFJWpf9BSQyTL-TLJWCWWMZfA7swb

Hello! Thank you for such nice compliments. It really is a good recipe and can have raisins added to it if you like or dried cranberries. I hope you enjoy it if you make it. I checked out your playlist. Thank you so much for including this recipe. You have some very interesting recipes collected. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for watching! -Jill

Cortland apples are good baking apples too. They are firm like a granny smith, but they have a sweeter taste, but not as sweet as Red Delicious apples. They hold their own and don't mush down during cooking. The sauce was too thin. Coat the apples with the flour but do not add any water! The apples will release their own juices from the sugar and the heat as it's baking. There's no need for the water. The sauce will come out thicker and coat the apples better without the water. BTW, I'm glad you didn't bomb the recipe with a crazy amount of sugar like most people do. I've seen this done with 3-4 total cups of sugar in it! That is WAY TOO much sugar in any kind of dish! It overwhelms everything else and the apples are moved to back stage when they should be the whole point of the dessert.

I make it every year, but I never add sugar in the apples, there is usually enough on the top.

Refine sugar so bad for diabetic people but, it looks so good.
