Conan always amuses me because if Conan is unarmored it's usually because of circumstances (breaking out of jail, favoring stealth over armor, surviving a raid, etc) and he'll frequently wear anything from a mail shirt to full body armor, but for whatever reason popular culture has only held on to the shirtless barbarian in a loincloth presentation regardless of the situation.

A major bit of context for Conan, I'd say running around in the loincloth and booties is strictly a movie thing. In the original stories, he's normally portrayed or implied to be clothed normally. Even in the comics, he usually has armor when he's fighting a real army.

In the original stories, it varies a lot depending on when the story is set and what conan is doing. In some of the chronologically early stories, he's described as wearing nothing but a loincloth and sandals. Sister's of battle armour is supposed to be a powered armour suit, anything leather or cloth over it is just sitting over the top of the armour. moreover the women in the sisters arent genetically enhanced. they are highly trained regular female humans who have been contracted by the eclessiarchy or nobles of houses who are given this training. and and dont have the ceramite skin grafting male space marines do. so basically these women are wearing hundreds of pounds of powered armor with their own physical un modified strength. also not true many of the sisters who wear all those dangly bits are mostly front line fighting . Many cannoness' or dialogus' type units walk into battle chanting scriptures and hymns for the sisters so they go into Zealous fervant rage. so all those dangly bits are where their holy zealous magic comes from by using the power of FAITH to protect them whether its incense burning items holy torches or pages of anointed scripture transcribed onto the armor or tagged on with paper.. so they serve a purpose other then aesthetics. The back-and-breast has no flexibility at all and falls directly into Just Stab Me Now, since that's exactly what would happen. Given the coverage, it's likely that the stabbing would be through the groin, which makes it even more special. If you were to shorten the breastplate and provide an actual fauld, it wouldn't be bad. Worth noting: Conan was often given armour in the short stories, and would accept and wear the armour when he had the opportunity. He even wore full plate into battle at one point. @@SacredDaturaa I'm not sure what you mean by "scantily clad" the sisters are much more heavily armoured than the average soldier in the setting. @@CyberJellos I was alluding to the MGSV character Quiet, who is practically naked, and this has an in-universe explanation (she breathes through her skin). Side note about the Sisters of Battle: that’s power armor. Through supposedly technological means it adds a lot of strength to her. The giant bulge you see on the back of the one you did a close-up on is a jet pack, which usually involves the sword as part of a powered “death from above” move. So it’s possible in-universe they weren’t worried about torso flexibility. Likewise, only the very highest leaders got permission to wear helmets. The censor… I got nothing. I mean, their actual god did sometimes grant miracles in battle, so it might have been a worthwhile concession. And they were also fully qualified nuns… I could see them leading sermons in full armor, etc. so while I agree with your critiques, most of them could be explained away via the lore. Of course, the lore creators and the fan art community feed off each other, so that might all be dudes drawing bad armor decisions, then authors coming up with weird reasons a reasonable person would make those decisions. (See how Solo the movie explained away the word ‘parsec’ from A New Hope.)
@I.Lostalim2 жыл бұрын
That's not a jet pack - sisters jump packs are much larger than that - that is just the standard power armour reactor. The literal power supply for the armour. As for being "written away by the lore" we all know a lot of that came later. In the 90's Games Workshop went "whoops we need women" and wanted their addition to be as obvious as possible ... That said however everything produced for the more venerated factions of the Imperium, such as the Astartes or Inquistorus, the Adeptus Sororitas have armour that is designed to be as much ceremonial as it is a giant suit of robot armour and as such tends to be very extra

Most people do believe it gives some form of minimal defense but there isn't really much to support that, since she dies in a single hit in it. 😅

Thats quite realistic - until the high medieval period only mounted heavy cavalry had full protection of the legs, infantry might get a facing greave on one leg but thats it. Striking a leg in battle leaves you at a huge disadvantage - you are focusing low down, meaning the other 10 or so enemy soldiers within spear range of you have an easy stab.
@nikmenn27512 жыл бұрын
@@Debbiebabe69 About cavalry - no one except knights could afford to wear greaves, because it's costly and walk in these is tiresome. About leg slashing - history told quite opposite - if you have tight formation fight these 10 spearmen will be already engaged in fight with your allies and you will have no room to make a strike which will require of you to expose yourself and more importantly - legs are the only zones not protected with shield in such a fight.

If anyone is interrested in what exactly the armour is that a Sister of Battle from the warhammer 40k universe wears and how it functions. It is Called power armour. The more famous power armour known is that worn by the adeptus astartes. Better known as space marines. A suit of armour with all kinds of protective layers which moves with the wearer by use of integrated servos and fiber bundles(synthetic muscles) If worn with a helmet it is completely sealed from the outside environment.

Regarding the Sisters armour - it's "power armour", somewhere between plate mail, a spacesuit and a mechanical exoskeleton. For costuming purposes, it's a solid shell-like structure, possibly with more flexible underlayers around the main bits. Diagetically, the main material is "ceramite", a ceramic polymer something something wibbly wobbly techy mechy stuff, and then there's powered circuitry and ballistic plate and space kevlar textile layers all underneath. This is actually the toned-down version - Space Marines have the "full" version which is a) powered by a backpack generator & b) wired directly into their nervous systems. Metal.

would be fun to tierlist armour sets in specific settings "over time": armoursets in the first DA game were very hit & miss, while later games "hit" more accurately or were, at least, More Deliberate in their "misses"; some in the comments have mentioned that Warhammer's figurines are much changed from 5yrs ago vs now; quite a few long-running works (TV series especially) begin at one end of the Tierlist and end at the other, costume-wise (a lot of medical/police dramas start out with tied-back hair & proper footwear on-site then, 5 seasons later, have Full Wavy Locks at all times). Seeing the latest Kayle from LoL redesign certainly had me surprised - I played LoL on&off in its earlier days, when it had Lore Newsletters, and I honestly can't tell whether the designs have improved or backpedal'd as time has gone by (I think the designers might be doing a box step?). Love your channel, Jill. I'm an aspiring medieval cosplayer, and I wonder if you could do a video discussing the ins and outs of balancing protection vs mobility? Your armor tier lists seem to lean more toward the protection side, particularly in the matters of gorgets, helmets, pauldrons, and greaves, but it seems like those extra pieces would also potentially limit range of motion in addition to adding more weight.
@JillBearup2 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting question! Basically I am very forgiving of an assemblage of random armour bits if the character is meant to be poor or just picking stuff up, but if they’re meant to be important and they’re in plate I’m like “then why don’t they have *everything*?” I’m happy to rank historically inspired stuff higher even if it’s just a breastplate and a helmet, but I will automatically hate anything where metal and bare skin come into contact, because the chafing would be…intense. (Also it must be noted my tastes are subject to change over a relatively short period of time as I learn more about different kinds of historical armour. 😁)
@TF_NowWithExtraCharacters2 жыл бұрын
I would also suggest checking out some HEMA or historical armour channels (I mostly watch a weapons channel, but this point gets mentioned sometimes) - armour back in the day is a lot less limiting than we think of these days, for the simple fact that having the ROM you need is literally a life or death situation on the battlefield. A lot of it comes down to the design and the amount of articulation, though of course more ROM means more gaps and less protection. That gets mitigated by wearing other stuff underneath though. Weight... Sadly there isn't too many ways around it (these are career soldiers, after all, they're fairly fit on average). Also somewhat mitigated by proper design, like having the belt support some of the weight of the upper body armour.

There are pictures of people on the same side in the same time period fighting side by side, one with more complete plate coverage, another basiclaly just with a breastplate and helmet.
@stuartconrod83642 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest you look at Brett Devereaux's blog, A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry. He has a 'resources for worldbuilders' section, which includes a section on 'order of armor'. He is a historian and can generally reference how people historically prioritized gearing up or down. TLDR: - Head protection (not face) first; your brain is VERY important and it's fairly cheap and easy to protect your noggin. - Torso (chest and belly) next; that's where all your organs are and penetrating hits here will likely kill. Even if it's just textile (gambeson or similar), it's better than nothing. - Hips, upper thighs, shoulders; these are further out and need more mobility, but are still big targets that will disable a fighter if struck hard. You virtually never see protection for these body parts in history without head and torso first. - Extremities like lower legs, forearms, hands, feet, etc. They need the most mobility, they're the hardest targets to aim for, and a hit here is less likely to incapacitate. You kind of see this order in modern body armor - even for WW2 era trench-dwellers, steel helmets were still worn. Present-day soldiers still wear helmets and enough armor on their torsos to protect from bullets, but nothing for hips/limbs.

If I ever get round to trying to write a medieval fantasy story I'm going to include a female mage who specifically wears dangly jingly metal bits for combat, just to mess around with people and distract them (sexies aside, shiny metal bits catching the sunlight can be unexpectedly blinding). The kind of outfit that would make slave Leia look like a churchgoer. But it's mostly a PR stunt, that outfit also comes fully loaded with magical shielding accessories. That's the outfit for combat and meeting important people, of course. Other times she's in regular, sensible clothes.

In a battle such kind of armour would be useless. Unless it's polished to the nth degree, it won't be shiny enough to be blinding and the dependence on sunlight is a weakness indoors or in darker spaces. As for distracting people, against anyone with any combat training that is antagonistic they will be thinking less 'sexy' and more 'I'm taking advantage of this to kill'. Regarding the Macbeth lack of helmets. This might be more for stage/film purposes than historical accuracy. The reason is that in film and stage productions, you do so much story telling with closeups on the face. When you put something in the way, like a mask and/or helmet, you're blocking one of the major means humans communicate with each other. So they may be forgoing the helmets in order to get those facial cues. I got this from watching the KZbin channel Cinema Therapy, where filmmaker Alan Seawright constantly brings this up, especially when discussing how film makers get masked characters (like Spiderman) to emote through the mask. (It's a good channel to watch for many reasons, not just breaking down how movies are made.)

"Could be worse" should be in the C tier spot above both of those options. It implies there is SOME protection being provide, where as the other two categories clearly do not provide any protection at all.

easy. Its rated above the 'could be worse' because it is not actually TRYING to be armour. Why are Morgana and Leia wearing them outfits? Side note- as Kayle in LOL levels up, her model changes. She sprouts more wings and gets more glowy. And she removes the helmet. Yeah.
