@@colenewaltersmusicandother9330 No, this is performative. It's all just political theater meant to direct all of the attention to anything and everything but guns, so that they don't have to actually do anything to address the gun problem. They'll talk about the courts, the laws, the funding, mental health, and how hard it's going to be to implement and enforce this new law. But, not one single word about the gun - the one thing that enabled that mentally disturbed repeat offender to kill that beautiful young woman from so far away, without knowing, and without even trying. This is all so that they can avoid the entire gun conversation and blame her death, and that family's loss on anything and everything but.

@bevmacdonald9008
@bevmacdonald9008 3 ай бұрын
@@katiesioux7757 the state does indeed "fund" the prisons. Did you assume the inmates themselves pay rent or room & board ? Or that there is convict insurance underwriters who pay? In this case, the state pays yet does not own the prisons. If the state owned them they would be a taxpayer owned asset, could be run more cheaply as a non-profit public service with no need to generate profits, and voters could know how its run without applying for a court order and would have a say in how it's run by contacting their local elected representatives. Prisons run for profit is a conflict of public interests, imho.

@@katiesioux7757there is a base contract amount the state pays and then inmate counts, extras, and overages get billed to the government as well. You see all those things you (rightly) listed would require the ultra wealthy to pay at least a little tax money and when you have those in power dedicated to ensuring that the ultra wealthy pay zero in taxes and in reality get other people’s tax money GIVEN TO THEM (Trump was given a $70 million tax return he didn’t deserve when he didn’t even pay a single dime INTO taxes) that doesn’t allow for supporting such things. They also want education, both primary, secondary and college to be reserved for the rich and powerful exclusively so they can become oligarchs in America instead of that title being Russia specifically.

Firstly, the legal dispensary Marijuana is expensive, so there is still a market for illegally grown and distributed (untaxed) Marijuana. Secondly, I haven't noticed a reduction in Marijuana related crime. There is still Mexican cartel involvement in very serious crimes related to Marijuana- murders, dispensary robberies, and robberies of legal grows.

If someone is committing crimes and isn't competent to stand trial, that person shouldn't be released without some barrier to the public. Mental illness isn't a free pass to go on being a threat, burden, or danger to the rest of society. The state has a responsibility to the public's safety (including those with mental illness). That's what we pay taxes for. That is the purpose of government. If our legislators and so-called "leaders" can't manage our tax dollars to do the job, they don't need to be in office. State Republicans have had a super majority for more than 6 years, and they've yet to make Tennesseeans any safer or deal with the societal issues that perpetuate crime. The only thing they're interested in protecting and serving are their donors, their campaigns, and corporations. They don't care about people. They don't care about communities. They don't care about small businesses or families. They only care about money and control. Time to step aside and let some actual public servants do the work of governing and running a state. As a resident of Tennessee, I imagine it has a lot to do with how closely you follow Conservative Christian or "white people with money" stereotypes. Notice that you being actually guilty of a crime isn't necessary (it's before the trial). Notice that they can keep you locked up there literally forever, if they decide they "can't arrange an outpatient treatment plan" even after the condition/episode ceases. Notice I. The language of the bill that they literally describe these people as "mentally defective." The bill describes no criteria whatsoever other than a court said so.
