If someone is committing crimes and isn't competent to stand trial, that person shouldn't be released without some barrier to the public. Mental illness isn't a free pass to go on being a threat, burden, or danger to the rest of society. The state has a responsibility to the public's safety (including those with mental illness). That's what we pay taxes for. That is the purpose of government. If our legislators and so-called "leaders" can't manage our tax dollars to do the job, they don't need to be in office. State Republicans have had a super majority for more than 6 years, and they've yet to make Tennesseeans any safer or deal with the societal issues that perpetuate crime. The only thing they're interested in protecting and serving are their donors, their campaigns, and corporations. They don't care about people. They don't care about communities. They don't care about small businesses or families. They only care about money and control. Time to step aside and let some actual public servants do the work of governing and running a state.
