Jim Campilongo is one of the finest guitar players around. I only discovered him in early 2010 when he released his album Orange which a lot of friends were raving about. It's a really awesome guitar album and so when I was in New York in November 2010 I hooked with Jim for an interview for you guys.
Once we got chatting it just kept going and ended up being nearly 50 minutes, but it was all too cool to cut. He knows a lot of great stuff and there is a lot to learn in this...
So go check out his album Orange, and he also does some very cool lessons by mail and download from his web site:
www.jimcampilongo.com
He's also playing every Monday night at The Living Room (Ludlow St, Lower East Side) with his trio which is real awesome too.
I know the quaility is not so hot, I didn't have my usual camera with me (too big) so it was the first time using my JVC HM1, which did a great job considering we didn't have any lighting and it was getting dark.

Kudos to you as well because your channel has really come a long way in sound/lighting/etc but it seems like your content has always been awesome. This is top notch stuff.

Enjoyed Mr. Campilongo's interview. It was enjoyable to hear him explain how he learned guitar, basically like a regular person. So unlike some of these other "great" players who just go on and on about how in tune they were with music and the instrument from day 1.

Fantastic video Justin!, It's guys like this that keep me interested in guitar. His enthusiasm for the instrument is truly remarkable, and yet, he doesn't seem to boast or gloat. A very humbling experience. I'll be checking out some more of his stuff after watching this. Cheers! :D

He is fantastic and passionating ! Thank you so much for this wonderful interview, that was so good I took my guitar on the spot and played at the same time than him (at least, tried to :)). His points on Roy Buchanan are quite fair, he was one of the best guitar players I've ever heard, with an amazing feeling and technique.

Very interesting and entertaining interview. I'm definitely going to check out Jim Campilongo's music. I love his references to Roy Buchanan because I saw that same PBS special, "The Best Unknown Guitarist in the World" as a kid and became a big fan from that day on. I always think of him when I hear Dire Straits play Sultan's of Swing because no one could make the guitar cry and sing like Roy could.

@thescowlingschnauzer It's just out of frame but he's manipulating the tone knob (or is it the volume knob?) with his pinky finger. You can see that he's holding his pick with thumb and forefinger with the other fingers extended in sort of the "OK" sign, and the pinky finger can reach down to the knobs on the guitar.

@thescowlingschnauzer
@thescowlingschnauzer 13 жыл бұрын
@JustinSandercoe and @derfunkhaus Thanks! Watching a bit further, I see Jim talks about his approach to the tone knob - he kind of sweeps his last three fingers by in a sort of caressing movement. I play a Fender Telecoustic, so there isn't a tone knob in the same place. I run it thru Line 6 Spider IV with an FBV Express MKII footswitch, so maybe I can use the Line 6 software to program a sound that let's me use the expression pedal as tone instead of volume to get a similar effect.

@JustinSandercoe and @derfunkhaus Part II: I really like how that sound is like a vacant, rolling expanse. Like wind over a prairie during a bleak winter. Generally I prefer a Stratocaster's sound to Telecaster's (vice-versa with the unplugged sound of Telecoustic and Stratocoustic), but that tone swell sound is something I could really get into.

What does he say is the "guitarist's favourite key"? I heard it but now can't find it without watching the whooole thing again.
@CDCalvert
@CDCalvert 9 жыл бұрын
At around 13:30 he says that Ebm isN'T the guitarist's favorite key. But if I thought guitarists had a favorite key I would say it'd have to be G major. G-C-D-Em are all open chords, whereas a key like Ebm requires all barre chords for the I-IV-V-vi (or a capo on the 6th fret), which is why guitarists wouldn't like it. A major, A minor, and C would probably all tie for second.
@MisterBoy316
@MisterBoy316 9 жыл бұрын
CDCalvert Cheers, that makes way more sense :) Personally I think E major is nicest because the chords you normally play as barres using the A shape - B (2nd fret) , C#m (4th fret) , E (7th fret) and E shape - A (5th fret) & B (7th fret) - can ALL be played open using those shapes without barring, giving a lovely sound. On acoustic guitar it's lovely especially the open C#m on the 4th fret, probably my favourite chord (a totally normal C#m barre chord on the 4th fret but leave both E strings open)
@michaelruggles9441
@michaelruggles9441 9 жыл бұрын
John D Hey if you haven't played these chords yet, you should play the F#m and G#m as well leaving the e and b strings open. You don't have to use your thumb, but it's easier that way.
