Have you ever listened to a different song from Radiohead? They're the furthest thing from uplifting and wholesome messages. The point of the song is how the singer stalked a girl in college because she was beautiful and angelic in his eyes but questions why he's doing it, ultimately getting drunk enough to talk to her and scaring her away. It's a story, it says what it means, there's no underlying concepts or positivity, it's just pain and anguish.

Disagree with the generalization 'Comedians are secretly depressed.' On stage they make fun of themselves or others to express on the spectator's behalf what bothers, burdens or interests him or her. Artists like comedians are just normal people with problems like everyone else. My opinion as a vocalist: he poured his heart out in this song. He might not be a gifted singer, but I truly believe he really did his best and was expressing deep emotions and love for this song. It honestly makes me happy because he wasn't really that bad and it takes sooooo much courage to do what he did. Perhaps easier because of his fame but in some ways harder to be taken serious being known as a comedian. Personally, I found this pretty interesting.

Actually comedians on the level of Robin Williams often made me question "What is he hiding" to have such constant and spontaneous reactions to everything and anything that was said. I do not mean to diminish his MONUMENTAL talent but looking through the lens of a psychological observation, diversion is one of the greatest tools that a manic depressive has in their arsenal. The crux of the dilemma is they want help but don't want to ask for it hence the outward obscuring of said problem.

The irony is: George Martin (Beatles producer) put out an album near the end of his life -- I *think* it was called "In My Life" -- which featured people he admired performing songs of the Beatles, and Jim Carrey's "I Am the Walrus" made me really double-take. It was an absolutely stand-out track, and formerly I barely had any idea he could even carry a tune. He absolutely *nailed* that song, and not only did he completely make it his own, but I feel it holds up against the original version, believe it or not. Sure, he probably had limitless takes to perfect it, but the guy undoubtedly has pipes. (And I imagine Lennon had a few tries, himself.) Solely because of that track, I'll easily overlook this performance as a drunken and/or emotional one-off. The George Martin track is *very* much worth looking up. In fact (forgive me-- I never ask this), if anyone can upvote this comment so I can find it again, I'll do everything in my power to return with an edit that links to Jim's "I Am the Walrus," so you can hear for yourself. (Respect, Mr. Carrey, and R.I.P., Mr. Martin) Edit: I found the Walrus track with ease, and getting back here wasn't actually so hard after all, but I'm gonna leave my original post intact and just drop this off: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2Gqq2iwl6yChM0

A big thing about Jim Carrey singing this, he knows his vocal limits, he drops his tone an octave lower, or at least tries, to keep singing without his voice completely breaking.

@@HereticFox An octave is when you sing in key the same note but much lower on the scale. You know how you can keep singing up until you end up singing the same note just much higher. The note you start at is an octave lower than the one you end up at. What I'm saying is that Jim here isn't singing an octave lower than the original song, he's actually singing mostly the same notes.

Agreed - apart from Leslie Nielson, I can't think of many actors who successfully transitioned from drama to comedy. Yeah, the fact dramatic films have more pay and prestige probably helps, but you'd think it would still happen every so often, right? I reckon it's because in order to be a good comedian, you need to have an understanding of what makes people laugh, what makes people tick, have empathy.Which is also why I reckon that a lot of edgelord and hard right comedy falls flat - laughing at other people because they disgust you only goes so far...

Jim Carrey *can* sing. I think this cover shows that he converted his skill in comedic timing to a dramatic/poetic license to emphasize the tone of insecurity in this song’s lyrics. That’s why he goes off key and loses pace with the band. Therefore, this cover is just as good as Radiohead’s original version. ETA: For everyone who is saying he can’t sing, listen to this song that he sings in different styles. Start about 0:50 into the clip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn-ZfIKQid6flaMsi=RuP2IsEEkwoyHJYI

lmao no. Your psychoanalysis is wrong. A person's intent of portrayal of feelings isn't going to magically turn bad singing into good singing. He just can't sing, plain and simple. To say this is "as good as Radiohead’s original version" is delusional and quite frankly insulting to Thom York and the rest of the band. You're trying to clutch at straws to justify his attention seeking. This can be nothing more than a bit of fun. But a bit of fun doesn't equal art or skill.
