Yes it was and the people in Detroit held up a huge banner saying 20/20 sucks right after that. John Stossel has no idea how lucky he is. If David Shultz had really hit him as hard as he could, then John Stossel would have gotten a broken jaw and several teeth knocked out.

Vince and Stossel were in cahoots, Vince wanted Shultz gone so Hogan could be "vince's guy" as Shultz was getting a lot of popularity at the time and that Vince phoned him up and said "good job Dave, that was a perfect way to go!" (talking about slapping stossel) and that weeks later he was sent to Japan, then he was brought back but at that point, Vince suddenly did a one eighty u-turn and said "nope, i didn't give him directions to do what he did" and that he wanted Shultz to pay the $400,000 lawsuit out of his own money even to the point where Shultz had tapes of wrestlers talking candidly about Vince McMahon and what would happen (i.e. underage girls being used as ring rats/groupies) and that the WWF wanted the tapes, so Shultz couldn't say no, so he handed them the tapes and then all of a sudden, Vince tells Shultz's laywer "Sorry, we've lost the tapes, they've been misplaced" (which is usually code word for "haha fuck you Dave, we destroyed your evidence!").

LMAO, so Vince did to Dr. D EXACTLY what the 20/20 expose accused promoters of doing to other wrestlers: Blackballing them and keeping them from working. That'd be hilarious if all you marks in the comments weren't cheering Vince and Dr. D on.
@evilcam
@evilcam 3 жыл бұрын
Someone finally says something sensible about this. I was beginning to think that there was nothing but wrestling fanboys jerking off to their own cognitive biases in this comment section. The 20/20 expose was primarily about the underhanded business dealings of the promoters, but this slap made sure people only talked about how a reporter was attacked for saying the damn thing was fake. It turns out , he fella who slapped Stossel got exactly what Stossel made the piece about, railroaded through shady and unfair business practices through the promoters. Yet, the only thing these dipshits seem to remember about it was the slap and fallout. No wonder that Vince fella has been able to successfully play the fans for decades. He knows exactly what to do, to manipulate and get them to focus on or think about whatever he wants. If they're so easily lead around by the nose, perhaps they're getting what they deserve, as fanboys always eventually do.

If I was another promoter, I would've told Vince "Fuck you. I'll hire Schultz or anything other wrestler I want." And then remind Vince wrestlers are independent contractors like he wants them to be, so he doesn't have to pay them benefits. And this was the same time period Vince was too arrogant to acknowledge the existence of other promotions.

Do you know for sure? Tbh, I could see it going either way - even if they were doctors, what if they're regulars employed by MSG? Would they be more apt to discount the guy's injuries due to being fans or understanding who Vince is and his connection to MSG? Not saying that's the case, but just like Stossel's brother - just cause a doctor or medic said something doesn't mean we should take it at face value.

No there was a M.D. on site because New York had a boxing and wrestling commission and there had to be a doctor on site to give physicals to the wrestlers and also be at ringside. You don't know what you are talking about.

I watched the Dark Side and the clips and was kind of disgusted with the way Stossel answered questions about the slap. In the video you can't see where he hits John the first time. I do know if there was no way for air to escape the ear canal, and a strong strike could potentially burst his eardrum (with enough air forced with no escape...but a perfect slap that doesn't allow air to escape is difficult to do), however, it was never said that that is what happened as there would be physical evidence that they could show in court (and in several interviews with Stossel he never said that was what happened.) It is possible could have caused Ménière's disease, however, it is a very rare disease and again there is evidence that could be shown and he never mentioned that. He also would still be complaining of symptoms as experimental treatments for Meniere didn't start until 2015. IMO, I don't think the slap was physically as bad as he said. I think what got hurt the most was his ego and I feel strongly about that with how he answered the questions in the Dark Side doc. He shifts the responsibility to his lawyer which is a tell-tale sign that the punishment didn't fit the crime and pre-emptively trying to distance himself from the judicial aspect of the case in the event the Vice reporters did more evidence searching. Kind of scummy. I know this is a huge embarrassment for him, but what I know is had he embraced it and laughed about it, it wouldn't leave him as bitter as he is today about it, and he wouldn't so angry. I've taken some licks and been embarrassed and I learned you have to accept it, admit it and move on and when you do, it takes a huge burden off of you.

I love that clip of Schultz slapping the shit out of John Stossel. The business was supposed to be protected even if the public did have an inkling of a doubt that everything wasn't on the up and up. Fucking people coming in from the outside went a long way to doing irreparable damage to the business. I know it's ironic now to be a fan who wishes everyone didn't know this shit but it used to be that the smart fans also did their part to protect the business and keep the marks oblivious. I sure as hell don't smarten anyone up, I work with a couple younger guys like that who are WWE fans and if they want to shoot the shit about it with me, I kayfabe them. It's just as much a courtesy in that, on some level, we all wish we could recapture that amazement and intrigue and I don't want to shit on their good time.

Have seen the video where DR.D slapped the taste out of John Stossel for saying that wrestling was fake .Keep in mind that this was back in the 80's and wrestling was starting to get national and worldwide exposure and it was around the time of the 1st Wrestlemania and heaven forbid if ABC and Stossel were going to make the wrestling business so obviously McMahon was going to do anything possible to cover his backside .IMO Stossel was stupid for even saying ro Schultz that Wrestling was fake due to the fact that wrestling was more hidden back than where it is now where everything is out in the open and the boys would keep kayfabe to a point that were willing to lose jobs over it which it cost Schultz his job with WWF cause like he stated in the clip above he was told by McMahon to be in character the whole time and dowhatever . If it was a case of overstepping boundaries don't you think that somebody would have stepped in to stop Schultz from slapping Stossel the on of that Stossel lies apparently about his injuries after getting checked out by medical Physicians at MSG that said that he was okay and no damage had be done but yet he goes to a doctor that turns out to be his brother and behold says that there's damage to his ears . As far as his issues with Hogan have seen the imfamous Minnesota Massacre where it was a bloodbath between them . McMahon was basically protecting his biggest star at the time in Hogan cause he was a moneymaker for the WWF and them going worldwide so in his eyes Schultz was the sacrifical lamb for lack of a better term in that he did what was asked of him and yet when the heat got too much for McMahon he dropped him like a bad habit and blackballed him to where he left wrestling .Can only imagine how many other wrestlers that were blackballed by the McMahons for similar reasoning if not worse . I'm sure the numbers would be astronomical . The again look at the wrestling business now to where it's pretty much gone down the toilet .Kinda wish wrestling would go back to the 80's/90's back when it was good . Oh well.At least i have my old school vhs tapes and dvds to watch of it . Take that over this so called garbage truth be told .

After watching Dark Side, I have a few conclusions: 1-As awesome as Schultz was for protecting the business, he does not get a pass because what he did was physical assault. He may have been playing a character but Stossel was not. 2-Having said that, Stossel gets no sympathy from me and loses all credibility when he does a special where he claims wrestling and wrestlers are fake but then he turns around and sues for a real slap. Well either your reporting has no credibilty now or you have no case.
