@Bill Turner not every wrestler deserves to have a turn holding the belt but that's what every wrestler should strive for. that's the fucking point right? to be the top guy to hold the belt. king of the mountain right? that's like a football player getting in the NFL not wanting to win the superbowl. you're wasting time and people know it. if you have a joke gimmick like that orange sloth guy no one can see you winning a belt. no one can see you competing for it. so no one cares about you. AE "wins and losses matter" W yet we have joke wrestlers trannies some 10 year old looking guy and amputee characters that won't win titles. their whole gimmick is making the wrestling matter yet you have jokes on the roster that aren't going anywhere.

The 'lights off' gimmick IS over-used, I'll grant you. But I find it even less credible, how a WWE wrestler (oooops, 'superstar') magically gets his personal theme music playing, whenever he/she does a run in. It kinda worked with Warrior at WrestleMania VIII, but maybe that was the last time.

@KennyKendall2001 5 жыл бұрын
One time I did like the "lights off gimmick" was when ECW used it for Brian Pillman's ECW debut. The thing about having a wrestler's theme music played whenever he does a run in doesn't make any sense but neither do run ins. What sport has people run in and ruin the contest going on without even suspending or firing whoever does a run-in? If they wanted to make it look at least a little more believable, there would be no theme music accompanying a run-in and any wrestler who does it would be suspended for at least 30 days and fined. That way run-ins it would rarely happen and when it did happen it would mean something because there would be consequences. By not imposing consequences, it makes the promotion a sham because they're condoning people running in and ruining matches. By playing the music when it happens, it makes the promotion a conspirator in it. Can you imagine the reaction if someone did that in MMA or boxing? The fans would demand they get their money back.

Cornette says the fans who bought the PPV wanted to love it, so AEW couldn't do any wrong in their eyes... but sounds more like Jim wanted to hate it, and AEW couldn't do anything right in his eyes. I normally love Jim Cornette, but it doesn't make any sense how he can be SO negative about almost everything AEW's done. It comes across as if he doesn't want them to succeed so quickly and easily where he failed his whole life. I was hoping he'd be bigger than that. At the end of the day, I'm one of those fans who've been watching wrestling since the early 90s but stopped watching in the last few years because WWE has finally bored us to death. AEW is the reason why I - and others like me - are following wrestling again. Not Smokey Mountain or ROH or TNA or whatever else Cornette tried to make something out of (but failed). So maybe he should look at what these guys are doing and have achieved in a very short space of time, and realise they must be doing something right - even though it doesn't agree with his fantasy of what wrestling should be... (which is basically what wrestling was 30 years ago). You don't have to agree with everything AEW is doing Jim. But please just pack away the sour grapes. It's not funny, and it's unpleasant to listen to for so long (unlike your usual hillarious ranting about everything worth ranting about in wrestling!)

Clearly he has never watched Being the Elite or had any experience with the sense or humor Cody, the Bucks, and Omega have. Also, why does everything have to make sense when it comes to knowing who's in a battle royal? The majority of the guys competing we're people so over with the crowd that they could've botched a lot more in that first match and the audience still would've eaten it up. I also agree with you that Jim just can't let go of the way wrestling was done back when was involved full time. You don't think that Bruno Sanmartino was shaking his head at wrestling back in the 80s Jim? Times change, styles change, and what's considered good entertainment changes. Re: announce team: Agree with Jim about Marvez being lost at times, but it wasn't really that bad... I mean Cornette was describing it as the worst ever. Also in Marvez's defense, Jim Ross was way worse and got lost/confused A LOT, even going so far as to say that on air, and was constantly being corrected/helped by the others on the team (and I love JR & think he's the best). Also 100% disagree with Jim re: Excalibur. Jim couldn't get past the fact that he wore a mask / had a gimmick name and didn't explain it. I thought it was plainly obvious to any wrestling fan and almost any sports fan... that he is a retired pro wrestler (he also used to apparently run a promotion but I didn't know that at the time). That immediately gave way more credence to what he says for color commentary b/c it generally means he knows wtf he's talking about. It's like in the NFL or NBA or MLB when they have a retired player or coach doing color commentary. I like how the mask somehow "sabotaged the credibility of the announce team" in Jim's mind... I can just see him getting mad any time the announce team doesn't come out in matching gold or red suits like 1970/80s MNF or WWF and all fitting the stereotype of bland faceless 1950s white journalist / tv host.

In the 40 years that I've been watching wrestling, I can't think of a time that hasn't included a fair amount of hokey shit. I liked your commentary - including the negative stuff - I agreed with some and disagreed with some. I think you and many other old-time wrestling fans have your rose-colored glasses on when you look back at the past. I laughed when you made your argument as to why an amputee shouldn't be in the match based on whether such a person would be in football. That argument falls apart with two words - midget wrestling. For their first show, I think they did well enough and as they build their brand and fans get to know their wrestlers, I think it will get even better. It might not be for everyone and that's fine. I'm not even sure if it will be for me or not. But given the state of WWE, it is great that someone is willing to make a fight to save the soul of wrestling in the mainstream.

This is going to sound a little crass, but there's a difference between booking midget wrestlers for some haha and booking an amputee as a serious contender to a championship. Back in the day, I don't believe Little Beaver was ever booked in a match versus Harley Race for the NWA world title. It'd be one thing if they had two amputees squaring off against each other (preferably not as a comedy segment). How do I suspend my disbelief that the guy with no legs can realistically defeat the guy with all his limbs? That said, kudos to him for learning how to do the things he does.

Well, in Corny's (and wrestling psychology's) defense, the racket usually led to the 1-2-3 or an injury angle. Havoc was using a staple gun as essentially an opening spot.

Chris Terry - Wrestling itself should be a dead art. We’re never going to get another golden age and nobody’s going satisfy the whole of fans of any demographic. WWE can’t get their shit together and every other company is sub-par as a whole. Personally, I think wrestling should just dissolve into the history books as something that once existed and should be remembered, not revived. Fuck ‘em all.

I’m a Cornette fan but Cornette’s critique of this show would carry more weight if he didn’t take Court Bauer’s money to overlook a bunch of MLW BS that’s at least as equally ‘as bad’ as what was on this show. Also his credibility crumbles when he bashes guys like Omega & the Bucks because they did stuff in the past that he didn’t like. Brian Last adds absolutely nothing to these shows. He may be the only person on the planet that didn’t like the Cody/Dustin post match promo.
