About 15 years ago I was shopping in Gresham Oregon when i heard this guy ranting out in front of the store. I didn't pay too much attention to him, but I noticed that he was a pretty big dude. When I was leaving the store there were a couple cop cars and apparently they were taking him away. One of the people standing out there said it was Billy Jack and that he was a constant problem around the area for his public outbursts.

I've lived in Calgary most of my life. I'm in my 50's and I used to go to the matches every week with my best friend. I saw MANY big name wrestlers debut and/or work their rookie years: Bret, Dyno, Davey Boy, Anvil, Benoit, Owen, Pillman and a ton of future NJPW legends who came to Calgary to learn the North American style: Liger, Hashimoto, Saito, Hase, Kawada, Sasaki, Hirata, Takano, etc. I never saw another wrestler pick up the skills faster than Billy Jack Haynes. He came to Calgary after Dr. D. told him at the Portland Sports Arena "If you wanna learn to be a wrestler fly to Calgary next Friday, come down to the fairgrounds and find Stu Hart". I believe Billy only did a month in the Dungeon - a lot of it under the guidance of Dynamite - and then he was stuck on TV. I was shocked to learn later that Billy only had a month of training. He worked really well. His move-set was super derivative but it was derivative of the right guys. It's like in Billy's mind he was looking at the Stampede roster and thinking to himself "I want to punch like Dynamite. I want to bump from a punch like Duke Myers". He did the slow falling tree back bump after taking a punch exactly like Duke. Better even. He was one of the most impressive rookies I ever saw. And it took him places. When he returned to Portland he was a big territorial star within a year. Nevermind an episode of Dark Side Of The Ring Billy needs an entire MOVIE.

I did a quick web search when this started to become an item. Channel 6 in Portland posted a still of the cops cuffing him. As Corny pointed out, longtime area wrestling fans were quick to identify him based solely on that still. The local news was abuzz with the story but provided few if any details. Where Corny got it wrong was describing Lents as a quiet neighborhood. The area in question is across I-205 from the SE 82nd corridor, which is one of the sleazier parts of Portland. If not for the news buzz associated with this being a recent event, my aforementioned web search wouldn't have turned up anything special, as shootings appear to be a common occurrence in Lents.

Yeah when I was really young and getting into wrestling Billy Jack's fans was everywhere. He was on magazines and had an action figure that other kids had. And I literally never saw him on TV except going back and watching really old stuff 30 years later.

Growing up with Portland Wrestling in the 70's and 80's, I got to see all the greats when they started like Roddy Piper, Matt Borne, The Grappler,Buddy Rose, Dynamite Kid, Curtis Hennig, Buzz Sawyer, Jesse Ventura and so many more. It's really sad to see how Billy Jack's life turned out. Another boyhood hero gone because of his life choices. I met Buddy Rose just before he died. He was the nicest most humble when I told him how he and the wrestlers got me through my parents divorce and to be strong like them. I think it touched him to know he had that impact on a young kid now an adult who was indeed strong. He might have acted a heel but he was a hero to me just like Billy Jack was. It's sad that drugs and other things got him to this point.

Billy Jack is 70. His wife was 85. His best friend and neighbor said his wife had severe dementia. Billy fell and broke some ribs. He had to rely on others to care for her. The neighbor also said, they owned a guinea pig that slept with them for years and the Guinea pig recently died, Causing him to go into a deep depression. A very sad story. Dementia is 10x worse on the family than on the patient 😢

Saw Billy Jack at Wrestlemania III when he was up against Hercules Hernandez, he had puked outside the ring on one side , some of it was on his beard and chest when he later applied the full Nelson on Hercules . Guy looked like he was carved out of granite.

He actually worked one match in December of 84 for the WWF in Chicago I believe and then left to care for his father or that was the story. He then returned in late August/early September of 86 and got a brief mid card push.
