Mick Foley compromised his personal well-being just for his love of the business 1. He got himself thrown twice in the KOTR 98 Hell in a Cell match 2. He suffered thirteen brutal chairshots while handcuffed 3. He participated in Japanese deathmatches 4. He was mauled by Vader and powerbombed onto concrete 5. He was speared onto a burning table 6. He got himself Pedigreed onto thumbtacks 7. A wide variety of chairshots and other hardcore related injuries

For those who never read Foley's first book Have a Nice Day it was Cornette who gave Mick the move he would later use as Mankind. Early in Micks WCW run he was hoping to change his finisher, the elbow drop off the apron to the floor was getting peoples attention but it was also killing him, Mick asked one of his coworkers about what to change it to (I think it was Dusty or Sullivan) and they called over Cornette who was a walking wrestling encyclopedia. Jim thought about it for a second then brought up the story of Dr. Sam Sheppard, a real life neurosurgeon from Ohio who was convicted of murdering his wife in 1954, Sheppard himself claimed it was a "bushy haired man" who broke into their home and killed her. The first trial was a media circus, the OJ Trial of the 50s, and in 66 his new attorney F Lee Bailey won him a new trial and got him acquitted. Anyway after his freedom Sheppard tried going back into medicine but failed horrendously, then dabbled in pro wrestling (at the age of 45), having married the daughter of a wrestler/promoter George Strickland, before dying of alcoholism in 1970. Sheppards career as a wrestler was very short and unspectacular but he did do one thing, using his medical knowledge to develop an interesting finisher called the Mandible Claw. Cornette introduced that finisher to Mick and Mick liked it but the bookers in WCW didn't so it was nixed. But when Mick became Mankind he got Vince to let him use it, and the rest is history.
@colourfaze865 жыл бұрын
FerretJohn He didn’t hear about the mandible claw until he was creating the Mankind character in 96. Cornette was in WWE at that time and Mick asked him for finisher ideas then. Thank god they didn’t name him “Mason the Mutilator”.

Releasing content on Mick Foley is the sure-fire way to my heart, Jim and Bryan. I wouldn't be a wrestling fan if it weren't for him. Wasn't even a fan of wrestling but for some reason my pop gave me a mankind action figure when I was just a tyke - he must've stolen it or something - anyway, I'd always wondered where it came from since it looked so distinctive with the mask, the wildman gleam in his plastic painted-on eyes, the ratty dress shirt and tie - only later as an older kid did I stumble across his place in wrestling history via dvd's and I was a wrestling fan ever since. My all-time favorite, hands down. My dad even got me Mick Foley's autograph once for my birthday - not sure how he could steal that one so I figure it must be legitimate, his penmanship wasn't very good.

Even in the late 80's he was using a somewhat hardcore style with doing the diving elbow off the ring apron onto the his opponents on the floor and the brawling style .In WCCW he was their Light Heavyweight Champion in a feud against Eric Embry where he was diving onto the floor on his ooponents . Finally in the 90's his style started getting more over with bloody brawls against Vader in WCW and with Sabu in ECW where those matches are considered hardcore classics plus his violent Barbed wire matches against Eddie Gilbert and Terry Funk .Finally in Japan where he became the King Of The Deatmatch by winning a 1 night tournament beating Terry Gordy, Shoji Nakamaki and Terry Funk to win that tournament making him a hardcore superstar and cementing his hardcore status . As we know his worked ECW and went on to WWF and became Mankind with feuds against Undertaker ,HHH, Shawn Michaels ,Steve Austin and so forth . A year later the Dude Love and Cactus Jack later followed as personas of his . Whatever character he used Mick Foley carved out a legacy that few can match . Respect to the Hardcore Legend that is Cactus Jack .

First time I ever seen Cactus. Was on WcW Saturday night. I think he wrestled Sting. He did one spot where Sting hit him on the apron. Cactus spread eagle falls backwards off the apron. The back of his head smacked the guard rail. Knocks himself out. That was totally unnecessary for him to fall that way. But I think he wanted to. I was like this dude is not normal lol

His first WWE title became an unforgettable moment in WWE history. Sad to say that Eric Bischoff had to let Tony Schiavone spoil the big win on Nitro, causing fans to change channels and watch Foley seize his moment while WCW dragged itself to ruin when they had Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash make a very stupid stunt with the latter losing via a harmless fingerpoke
@fuzzydunlop79285 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbandada9887 It helped cement the moment in the larger timeline of wrestling history, though. It's my absolute favorite Michael Cole call, one of his rare early bright-spots. I wish JR could've been there to do the deed but Cole outdid himself in trying to fill those shoes.

@@michaelbandada9887 Foley actually talks about this in his book and takes it in stride because his Championship win was also the night that WWF finally beat WCW in the ratings War Supremacy. In other words, WCW was trying one last time to keep Foley down, and he single handedly beat them.
