It's not that people are more sensitive nowadays. There have always been a small amount of people who you could call 'professionally offended'. We've all probably heard of the term 'moral majority' and parents' council type associations who launched campaigns against obscenity on television in decades gone past or those mailbag programs where someone would write in complaining about an offensive thing on last night's program. It's not a new thing. The only thing that's new is social media which allows these people to organise and find each other and amplify their outrage. And that scares advertisers who do not want to lose one cent from an abiding association with something controversial, which in turn scares broadcasters who do not want to lose advertising money. And because these professionally offended people can amplify their presence on social media, it makes it seem like they're everywhere, especially in the eyes of those who get annoyed about them and seek them out to battle. Lesson is - if advertisers chill out a bit, and broadcasters relax a little, and those professionally annoyed about the professionally offended find something else to do, then 'cancel culture' loses all of its power and we can move on with our lives.
