I met Kanyon when I was just a child in Detroit after a WCW show. He was walking back to his car from the arena. He was over with his, “Who’s better than Kanyon” gimmick at this time. He was one of my favorites back then, along with Jericho and Raven. I always root for the underdogs. Kanyon signed an autograph on our show program and was very polite to my family and I. Some things in life we never forget. Also, fuck John Cena.

Chris was my cousin, and I remember me and my brothers and cousins went to a Monday Nitro at Nassau colosseum, and after his match he came up into the stands and sat with us for a few minutes. He was in his regular clothes and a baseball cap. (As if that was going to disguise him. He was TREMENDOUS) when everyone around us realized it was him, they went WILD! I think I was 12 at the time. I don’t think I’ve ever felt cooler in my life. 😂 He was our hero. He brought his two title belts with him on Christmas Eve one year, and my entire family took pictures with it. All us kids literally play wrestled with him ALL night throwing eachother into piles of wrapping paper. He was the kindest soul, and watching this episode was gut wrenching. Just the look on his face when that F$CK Ric Flair said he wasn’t good enough killed me.

I've said this here before , Kanyon was one of the best wrestlers to do. He used to always do really cool maneuvers and was pretty righteous on the microphone . I never understood when I was younger why he never got the big match even though he was great going back to his Mortis days . Unfortunately as an adult I can understand , but only imagine the reality of the situation . #whobetterthankanyon

Nitro, Labor Day in like 97 me and my buddies were front row and my friend had a sign that said “Wrath+Mortis+Glaicer=Gay” It’s not excuse but we were 16 and this was a different era. When they came down the aisle Mortis stopped, read the sign, drew back and spit a massive loogie at my buddy. He got the sign up just in time to block it. When he came out we were horrified. It’s just horrible to know you had a part in making someone feel like that. It’s been over 20 years but it still sucks knowing the guy was suffering like that.

I do feel bad that Kanyon was hurt by your sign knowing the deeper reason for it. But a teenager carrying a childish sign to a wrestling show isn't anything to feel too guilty about. That was such a casual type of insult back then, and also one that many if not most wrestlers probably got and it wasn't coming from a place of real hate, in your case obviously.
@janesmith76763 жыл бұрын
Also, recall that wrestling itself back then included a lot gay-as-the-butt-of-the-joke angles. So it's not like a teen dude watching this stuff can be expected to be more sensitive and conscientious, lol. (Personally, I don't even think all those angles were done with hateful intentions - more cheap and maybe tacky bids for laughs if anything. But that was then, and our culture has moved on a bit from that now.)

I know this is said often about people, but Kanyon was literally ahead of his time. His arsenal of moves is modern, him being gay wouldnt be an issue today (Anthony Bowens, Kenny Omega [kinda lol]) he had amazing charisma and even though it isnt where it needs to be, mental health is treated better than it was in the 90's. This was a huge tragedy. Rest in peace Kanyon.

First off speedy recovery to Travis. Loving the guest artwork for this week. Killer good! Now Kanyon...My heart broke for the man during this episode. Sad the struggles he was going through towards the end. If only back then he could've gotten more than just medication. I don't understand why Flair couldn't call him Kanyon on Stern after the interview and tell him the truth if it all was just a front he putting on defending WWE. Of course Taker is untouchable but you can't help but say damn how much did he know at the time since he has such a close relationship with McMahon. If he knew the segment on Smackdown was a gay bashing session...

@@thebigz3786 not talking about the chairshot, it's much bigger than that. To the point Jim and others brought up during the DSOTR episode it came off like a bad form of hazing.

@@THERCWRSHOW maybe. Though you have to take into account that Kanyon came out after he was fired, and the only person he told, was Sinister Minister. Who found out Kanyon was gay and told WWE? How did they find out? Then you have to remember Kanyon wasn't a main eventer, and was doing segments like this in WCW.
@SpinosaurusTheProudSocialist3 жыл бұрын
@@thebigz3786 You also have to remember that the WWF treated ex-WCW wrestlers like red-head stepchildren after the buy out. They gave DDP a creepy stalker gimmick, and they made him look like a complete jobber. And they made Booker T look like a total buffoon and he became basically Shane McMahon's lackey during the Invasion angle. If two of WCW's top stars who were multiple time world champions were treated that way, then it's not surprising that a guy like Kanyon who never reached that level of success was treated the way he was. Still the optics of forcing a gay man to dress like Boy George, and then having him get beaten down with a steel chair by a 6'10 biker from Texas is a bad look for WWE. But it could have been and probably was a coincidence, because as you said most of the people in WWE didn't even know Kanyon was gay at the time. As a gay guy myself who also suffers from depression and other forms of mental illness I would like that think that WWE isn't homophobic, but either way it's not a good look for them.
@thebigz37863 жыл бұрын
@@SpinosaurusTheProudSocialist first off, I'm sorry that you're going through some tough times. I have two lesbian aunts and a gay uncle. To the matter at hand, I think its just the timing of everything once the buy out happened, surely they couldn't make WCW guys look better than WWE guys that soon, although I wouldn't have made some of the gimmick decisions the WWE made. However, DDP did go on to win a title at WM 18, and Booker T eventually became a world champion, and KOTR. They just had to get rid of that WCW stigma over time. I don't think Taker bullied Kanyon, because people in DSOTR said Taker liked him.
