The biggest issue I've had with Wrestlemania, and indeed most super shows/pay previews WWE has put on in recent years is this... many of the matches are good, but the journey to get there is so unwatchable. All the hype that should make you want to tune in is awful, and most people just cling on in the hope that the match will be good anyway. The build-up for Belair v banks was so convoluted, included a character that had had nothing to do with either of them prior, and who then vanished. It just stunk.
@ProjectH19803 жыл бұрын
It was trash. The build up should've been Bianca and Sasha, period! No Reggie, No Women's Tag Team Championships, No Shayna (Sadly she's been criminally underutilized and buried) and especially No Nia "My Hole!" Jax!!! Both Womens Championship programs suffered the same convoluted overbooking involving Shayna, Reggie and Nia. Charlotte got punished for supporting Andrade, taking her out of Mania. So when Rhea challenged Asuka, it came out of nowhere and made no sense.

@Confusion D. Silence GTFOH. Punk was something special. He could have led a resurgence of the wrestling business. @AWX_Wrestling3 жыл бұрын
@Confusion D. Silence Punk doesn't owe Vince McMahon or the WWE a goddamn thing. He was misused in favor of a part timer (The Rock) and a guy who more than half of the fanbase booed even though he was supposed to be a babyface (Cena). Punk wasn't over except for that one year? Punk was over from day one in the WWE. Whether he was a heel or a babyface he got the right reactions from the fans. Straight Edge Society, Nexus, Summer of Punk all the way down to his WWECW run he was over. I'm with u Jim on the fans being more emotional. When I was 13yo, I didn't know the psychology of wrestling at the time. I've been a fan since age 10. My aunt used to take me to ALL the Jackson Coliseum matches of Mid South. I got kicked out the coliseum at 13 because Ted Dibiase cheated and won against Hacksaw Duggan. I was sooooooooo mad, I ran down from my balcony seat to the floor to hit Ted. I picked up a drink can and threw it at Ted and security wss right behind me and threw my lil ass out. I did sneak back in about 15m later so my aunt wouldn't know what happened and NOT take me anymore. I told Ted about when I was 19. He used to shop at KayBee Toys ( my job then) in the metrocenter in Jackson a lot. I finally worked up the nerves to tell him about that incident. He did his weird laugh and said "Thank you young lady, that means I did my job well that night" He also tipped me $100 for being a dedicated wrestling fan & letting him know that.

The issue I have is that everything that cornette likes was in the Banks-Belair match. The emotion, the facial expression, the storytelling instead of a spotfest. He picked the wrong time to get nostalgic. He is 100% right about his feelings towards the sport. But it hasn't been that way for a long time. It's all performance art, not much different from movies or television or any media that has an antagonist and protagonist doing battle with each other. With that said, it was troubling to me that the place of the Banks-Belair match on the card was clearly audibled. Lashley-McIntyre was promoted as the main event, and changed at the last minute. To me, that kinda takes away from them, instead of having them promoted as the main event from the beginning.

I don't have a problem with women main eventing but what I do have a problem with is the fact that Sasha Banks vs Bianca Belair was the main event just because they are African American and that is not a reason to get the main event spot, nothing about the build to the match or the way they presented Sasha or Bianca in the build up suggested WWE viewed them as the main event, it was only when twitter brought up the African American thing that WWE announced they would headline night one. The first African American wrestlemania main event should be because they are the top stars with the biggest build not just because of their ethnicity. you cant give a match an awful build then stick it in the main event and expect me to suddenly care because its 2021 and they are African American and look how HISTORIC it is.
@gsm73133 жыл бұрын
The build sucked and there was definitely an identity politics feel around the push for it to main event. It is clear by the build that Vince did not actually view it as a main event, and this week’s Smackdown was another reminder of this, as it was once again the Roman Reigns show, with Bianca getting a segment in the middle of the show and Sasha briefly being shown backstage. All of that said, the in ring product delivered and they proved that they very much deserved to be in that position.

WWE women are way better than AEW's but at the same time, look at how atrocious the women's tag team turmoil match was. Sasha, Bianca, Asuka, Charlotte, Rhea, and Bayley are some of their best, but Sasha vs Bianca wasn't a main event attraction to me so I agree with Cornette. Sasha/Bianca's build up was terrible. They had Lashley vs McIntyre which legit had the question would Lashley retain as champ or would they give Drew his moment in front of the crowd as everyone predicted. Besides Lashley vs McIntyre is for the company's top belt. Thats the belt with all the main event history and lineage. For it to be the first match was ridiculous.

I go with Jim on about 96% of his opinions on things, but this is part of that 4% where he's holding on to the past too hard. There are about 735 problems with the WWE & the wrestling industry as a whole, but featuring 2 excellent women (1 of whom won the women's Royal Rumble, the other has been the best female wrestler in any major promotion over the last 9 months), & they're both black women, in the Night 1 main event of Wrestlemania, is not any real contributing factor towards wrestling's decline. The audience has been shrinking very steadily over the last decade, way before Sasha/Bianca would've ever even been pitched as a Wrestlemania main event. Meanwhile, Jim dreams of a day when it's like the old Southern territories again, but no entertainment company in 2021 is making huge money focusing on Southern white guys as the big demographic to appeal to. The country's demographics have changed radically in the last 20 years & entertainment companies are understandably leaning into that to survive. It's not about giving women a Wrestlemania main event slot because they're women, Carmella & Dana Brooke will not be main eventing next year, it's about Sasha & Bianca both being able to pull a WM main event match off as the best match of the weekend, & the cultural significance of their match for a much more diverse audience.

So true. I’m sure many men from Cornette’s era did not care about or like women’s wrestling. I’m sure at one point Steve Austin was not a fan of it. Things evolve and people should evolve. Bob Holly criticized women’s wrestling in his book but changed his mind when he saw the crop of talent that came out of NXT. Banks and Bayley might be Steve Austin’s two favorite wrestlers in the world right now. I acknowledge that there is a gap between the top female talent in WWE and the rest, that terrible tag team match earlier on night one is a prime example of that. That said, Sasha Banks is on that higher level of the spectrum, and as far as I’m concerned, she is as good as any man in WWE, and has routinely had better matches than the men to the point where she at 23 years old made it that fans didn’t care about Kevin Owens and Finn Balor in a ladder match. She is super talented, and Jim Cornette should at least give her the courtesy of actually seriously watching and reviewing matches of hers that air on programs he watches

Most people that watch any sport, or what is being portrayed as sport, want to watch it at the highest level. You can demand equal rights for women until you are blue in the face, but you cannot demand that people enjoy watching a sport performed by women when they prefer to watch it being performed at a higher level by men.

I agree with Jim on the state of the modern wrestling business, but can't take his side on women main eventing and especially comparing them to the lingerie football league. I know that comparison wasn't his point, but it irked me cause the women have earned more respect than that. The match was good, bereft of most all of the things Jim hates most in wrestling, aside from the wrestlers involved being women. It was a good match, had some spectacle and a big emotional pay off for Bianca Belair. It belonged in the main event. The build towards the match however was shit, but that can be said of every match on this year's Wrestlemania, aside from Drew vs Lashley that I thought was alright. That isn't Bianca or Sasha's fault though, it's WWE having no clue how to tell a story anymore.
@seventhseventhnineteen22153 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think Jim's problem is, the women are actually trying and respecting the business more than most of the men. Even if you have a terrible build up, you can still put on a good match, which is what the women are doing. For Jim, its basically seeing the backup QB go in and steal the show, which he isn't used to nor he thought would ever happen. I also think Jim sees legitimate talent and wrestlers across the companies, who could bring back the nostalgic feelings, but there's so few of them it'll never culminate into a great promotion.
@johnmichael70673 жыл бұрын
So an apology but not really? You've compared woman's wrestling to a stipulation match and complained that they should not be doing anything that the men do (Royal Rumble, weapons, ladders, main event, etc). So the men should "reach for the stars" and the woman should "reach fo the ceiling"? Female talent have come into there own in the last few years and have seen massive popularity when allowed to act outside of those barriers set by old minds like Jim. A lot of the storylines and matches are new to the division, and in wrestling new is always popular. I understand why Jim hates todays wrestling and have had my doubts about it as well. He grew up in a time when wrestling was a certain way and has never change his mind on it. I grew up with 90's wrestling but that never stop me from exploring the many styles of wrestling. Heck, woman's wrestling in the 90's main stream was either non existent or far from good. That doesn't mean I hate it today, you grow as a person and your mind evolves with it. Just because I don't have the urge to stab anyone of todays wrestlers doesn't mean they aren't over. The Sonya Deville incident wasn't good and I would not wish that on anybody. I'm not a Sasha or Bianca fan (prefer Charlotte & Rhea) but I can recognize the significance of them headlining WM night 1. Hope one day you can see something like that and not scoff at it, but I doubt it.
@johnmichael70673 жыл бұрын
@@bw3230 Ratings are what they are and that is not what I was arguing. To say that todays female talent are not popular is incorrect. A lot of these woman have huge fan bases, Alexa Bliss's huge numbers on YT are why her Fiend storyline is still a thing. While some of the current Raw/SD womans scene is bad, that doesn't mean it all sucks. There are some great womans matches/storylines out there but with a " bathroom break" mentally how would you know? Same goes for the small guys, if you can't see someone like Darby Allin as good (even Jim likes him) because of his size then I can see why modern wrestling isn't for you. Caring about size over talent is why guys like Benoit & Eddie had to endure so much. To say no one is over based on your own beliefs then you just sound like Jim. Ratings as I said are what they are and I am a part of some of those ratings. Its easy to abandon wrestling and hate/criticize it. But what's wrong with the girls headlining? I don't get it. If the story and promotion of the story warrants it, what's the problem? Granted today's product is quite different and is hardly realistic, but if two women performed in a believable way, that should be fine to headline. The women's division shouldn't be secondary to the men's. I think Jim forgot that kayfabe died 15yrs ago and the art of' wrestling' died 20yrs ago. Even in the Attitude/Ruthless Eras, if women were promoted properly, Chyna/Lita/Molly/Ivory/Mickie/Jazz/Victoria/Gail and the like could've headlined Wrestlemania easily. But back then the women were always a side show. I could see Becky and Ronda headline a show. They just have to make the presentation look more snug like it did 20yrs ago.

Jim this is a bad attempt at an apology, you're a wrestling historian so you should know that the old timers of the 50s-70s thought the product of our era was not "real wrestling" too. Kayfabe is dead, and that's for the better, that asterisk/stigma is gone, and that's good. Nobody believes in santa anymore but you still can enjoy xmas. We DONT need fans hopping over the barricades to stab fans because they still think its real. Your era is gone, but theres still much to enjoy and that includes the women, who are better than ever now and are earning the main events and wrestling is far more global now so "only 2 million fans are watching" is a misnomer, because of modern tech more people are watching worldwide and weekly between raw, smackdown, aew and nxt theres about 5 million fans watching per week, not to mention all the views like here on youtube (were pro wrestling gets more views than the major sports combined) and the wwe network, and that's not bad. As a 50 year old fan who's been watching since '79 i need you to know that It's not your lawn anymore, appreciate the new view now, nothing is the same as it was in 1986 anymore and that's not all bad, it's not "very dark" you're just old, embrace it, you'll enjoy it more, I have, I do.

The person that sent this letter to Jim has no idea what they are talking about. Sasha is slightly over with a small segment of the audience. Bianca was barely even on TV until the Rumble. Saying that she is over is absolutely crazy. WWE wants her to be (and she should be), but WWE hasn't put in the effort to get her over.

Okay...So many levels to this... 1. Remember, Jim is old school...Meaning he still has the mentality of that 70's and 80's dude who wants to see something that looks like a good fight not just a "wrestling match". So he has a point there with the fact that a lot of these matches now a days look like dances then an actual fight. 2. If you hear what he is saying, he's not really bashing Banks, Belair or the Womens Division as a whole. He is basically bashing the Men's Division for allowing the Women to surpass them or get to the point where they would be in the Main Event of Mania. I think Jim feels they were given the Main Event of Mania because of how the company as a whole, isn't bulit around 1 person as it was with Hogan or Austin. Unlike back in the day, if you went to or watched Mania 3, it was for Hogan v Andre. Or Mania 17, Austin v Rock. To paraphrase..."You all are supposed to be Men. You were born bigger, faster and stronger. They couldn't put 60,000 in a stadium if it was just them and you Men can't perform or put on the type of matches that would force you to be in the Main Event without any questions asked?" Is how I think he feels. 3. With that said, with the current state of wrestling in his eyes, where Jim surprisingly missed this is from the booking side. If Drew McEntire wasn't going over against Bobby Lashley, than that match (Lashley v McEntire) didn't need to go on last. And since Roman was going over in night 2, you needed a feel good ending to Night 1 and that's what happened. So whether it was given to them or they earned or not. Banks and Belair needed to be the Main Event of night one because from a story aspect, it made the most sense. So Jim was given exactly what he wanted. Just not the exact way he wanted it.

On a 2-night WM event during covid, I'm fine with them being the main event. But this match was not the main event, in a regular WM. They didn't build it up enough because wwe has so many titles that every single match was built up. So they technically had 4 main events. So this didn't get the attention that it should to be a main event, and the fact that they had to start doing hashtags to convince management to give them the main event. That's stupid. You're either the most important match or you're not.

"Oh they're sooo OVER"! Yeah ok. The comparison to Rousey is stupid. People who never saw an MMA fight in their lives knew who Rousey was. @@Gorgutsforcongress Why? lol You don't know what's going on behind-the-scenes. Wrestling fans THINK they do because they read dirt sheets and watch shoot interviews and believe that that qualifies them to speak about what's good or not good for the company. Unless you work there yourself, you won't know how good or not good Stephanie is at her job. That said, we can apply that same logical thinking about Vince. I get his point on how wrestling is today, but when he said he longs for the days where the fans risk going to jail to help the babyfaces out, that proves my point in saying he's just stuck in the past. Yes that era of wrestling isn't coming back, but there's a little thing called moving on.

In some fashion, I don't disagree with you. But if I may, I think you're taking his comment a little too literally. When Jim refers to stuff like that, it's shorthand for referring to a time when people were so passionate and obsessed with the wrestling they were watching that they were willing to buy into the fiction enough to go to such lengths. Jim isn't advocating literally for return to that level of obsession and belief in kayfabe, he's just pointing out that the highest levels of passion these days don't even measure in the scale of what went on in times in the past. These days, when people get all worked up about this stuff, they're getting all worked up and passionate about the crazy garbage that they see like flips off the top rope and so on. Nobody shows that level of passion for a story or a character anymore. The best example I could give, was my grandmother. she passed away some years ago and was one of those fans that corny refers to. About a decade ago they had a story arc where John Cena was supposedly fired from the company and had to pay for a seat to sit in the audience. My grandmother was bending my ear about how horrible it was that they were treating him so poorly. I was laughing, and I said Grandma you know that this is all part of the story. And her response was yes I know, but, and then she went on at how horrible he was being treated. That is the joy of being a wrestling fan. In your head you can hold two contradictory facts at the same time. You can know that you're looking at a fabricated story and people playing a character, and then if the story is good and the passion is there you can get just as worked up that somebody is being unfairly treated by their evil boss.
@BeyondDaX3 жыл бұрын
Fair but today's audiences are so jaded that such passions are all but extinct. The last vestiges that the 'passion' that Jim had remembered back then was with Soccer that's cause for a lot of places. There is but few things to get passionate about compared to america were you would sooner see people get passionate over some e-celeb than a babyface. Things change.
