I didn’t like what the dude was at all but I also understood. When he didn’t do outrageous shit he was another Indy wrestler nobody had ever heard of unless they were really invested fans. Once he started the stupid shit he shit up to being much more known, both for people who enjoyed his shit and those who reviled it. He even had that porn site sponsoring him because of the stupid dick thing. So it was stupid no doubt but as stupid as it was if you’re a run of the mill independent dude who is close to 40 and suddenly this stupid thing gets you a bunch of exposure and sponsorship money, as stupid as it was, I can get why someone would do it. The pride to not do it only goes so far if you’re a dude who still hasn’t truly made it and now this one dumb thing now has given you some level of exposure and I’m sure he began to earn multiples more than he had been earning before. If those are your options I can’t unequivocally say that I’d have refused to do the same thing - it just would’ve been better if such a schnuck with this stupid persona didn’t try to be a woke boy at the same time which made if all the more annoying. And then getting exposed and his career ending out of nowhere was poetic to a degree after all the time he spent browbeating everybody and their morality.

the weird thing with Ryan is that he could be a big star in the wrestling business if he would drop all the silly shit that he does. The guys is a pretty decent wrestler and got a lot of charisma, he king of sleaze gimmick alone would make him one of the top heel on NXT anyday of the week. Why be a "big star" in WWE (where everyone is just...a dude thanks to Vince's idiotic booking) when you can make a killing on the independents? Joey Ryan is a pretty big draw and he doesn't need Vinny Mac's money to be one. If you want to see a mockery of the business, look at stuff like Big Ass, Jinder Mahal, 3-hour sleepfests known as Raw, the 6-hour shitty excuse for PPVs known as Wrestlemania...oh, and Backlash. People act like WWE is this bastion of immaculate programming, but all they have is a TV deal, all the independent talent (Go figure, they can't even make their own talent anymore) and NXT.

You're right, S James, at least when he was champion. Thesz HATED gimmick wrestlers. He didn't want women's matches or midget wrestlers on the same card as the world champion, and he didn't want to work a match with anyone who couldn't wrestle. The first time they booked him with the Sheik (Eddie Farhat), Thesz let it be known that he wasn't going to sell for the guy and that he was probably going to legitimately hurt him. The Sheik, frightened out of his wits, ran out of the ring, out of the BUILDING, into the parking lot, and ended up hiding under a car.
