Mae Young pushed the Dudley’s from ECW legends, to holy shit they will power bomb your grandma! The ECW wrestlers always seemed to have that obstacle of getting past the “anything goes” to “What the Network allows.” Yes, WWF(E) had a “hardcore” division and some extreme matches, but those were mild in comparison. What Mae Young did for the Dudleyz in taking that bump, put them over with heat in such a way we likely never saw before. Bubba sat there, with that blank stare, probably worried that he he killed her. He didn’t want to move, so he didn’t paralyze her. It comes off with this “BAH GAWD! LOOK AT THAT EUPHORIC LOOK ON HIS FACE!”. JR Sold it, Mae took the bump, and the Dudleyz went from a team that wasn’t understood, to one of the top 3 teams in the the early 2000s.

I grew up, 12 years old in 1978 , mid south territory, baton rouge etc. A wrestler named Randy Tyler ( real name Homer rice) teamed with Rip Tyler. Rips real brother, got injured , so the story goes, and Homer took his place. When he would go on tour, once to Japan, I would check on place and his horse's. I remember going to parties at his place, and meeting, Junk yard dog, Mr. Olympia , Ted DiBiase,, and hack saw Dugan, I was twelve at the time.

As yeah our Elders do stuff like that but imho they have earned that right as I guess I am apart of the Ol' Skool meets Nu Skool Era as I was born in 1982! As the reason FANS loved her isn't what she said more so it is what she did at like near 80 Years old taking them Bumps that Rasslers in their 20's Just cry about like lil wimps! but She took them like a champ n wanted to do more of them but Vince wouldn't let her cause of her Age more so and wanted her to live longer! but he loved her so much he kept Bringing her back more so alot over the last 20 years til she died cause I think he found his Kinda Kindred ring Mother more so! @@Caine_House They were initially, but they soon found out that being a world-class strongman doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be a hit. He had the very first guaranteed contract in the WWE (then WWF) at 10/years for a 1 million for year...That was absolutely unheard of, both in terms of the length and amount of pay of the contract especially for someone who at the point never wrestled before, super young and was completely unproven at that point. They did it because they thought he was going to be as big as Hogan with the whole "Strongest man in the World" gimmick, but it didn't pan out like they wanted, and they couldn't fire him because of the contract, so they tried to basically make him leave on his own accord by putting him through horrible gimmicks and angles but he took it with stride and made it work. It's actually a well-known situation, you can look it up there's a ton of articles and various wrestlers who can verify it. I believe even Mark attested and admitted to this as well at one point. It's one of those things that WWE would never admit to, but you once you hear about it and look back at what happened, it's quite obvious what they were trying to do.

Corny says "Retired for 30 years?" But this goes against Chris Jericho's first book, where he ran into her on the West Coast in the early 90's, where she was working as a Manager under the name "Johnny Mae Young"

At least I think it was Jericho's. I might be getting autobiographies crisscrossed.
@tommyfraz.
@tommyfraz. 3 жыл бұрын
It might be a case of semantics. She could have been “working” just to have something to do, and it was actually a “hobby”, when Jericho ran into her. She would have been in her late 60s early 70s at that time.

Crazy to think that we got The last of Mae Young’s legacy in the attitude era, which was so fitting since she was the definition of old school attitude. R.I.P Mae... and your puppies too.😁

I'm surprised the WWE moved away from honoring Mae when they tried the Moolah Battle Royal. Mae Young sold tickets and headlined cards in her prime, was a lot more physically active during the Attitude Era and, unlike Moolah, her alleged illicit activities were a lot less terrible by modern standards.
