I think I once met Ole in a Wal-Mart. I was about 10 or 11, and I didn’t have much knowledge of Wrestling before 2002 because that’s when I was born. I knew who the 4 horsemen were though. Ole was in front of us in the checkout line, and I guess I must’ve thought he was ARN Anderson because I told him “Has anyone ever told you, you look like Arn Anderson?” He replies with a chuckle and said “ I could beat Arn Anderson’s Ass” and went about his day.

In the early 2000's, Ole used to come in pretty much daily to eat lunch at Ryan's Steakhouse in Seneca, SC. He stood out wearing those old coaches short shorts with a t shirt and it would be 20 degrees outside. A friend of mine and me spoke to him one day and from that day on if we came in to eat and he was there, he would wave us over to his table, or either come to our table on his way out and speak with us. He was always FIRST CLASS to us and others that recognized him.

He used to take us out to Little Ceasars or the dollar movies once every couple months. He was always on the road. But going to Dairy Queen was unreal! He never approved of eating sweets. He stopped by about hour and a half prior to GCW house show. I believe that it was '85 and everyone was just surrounding the whole building. And he's just sitting there eating his dinner, undistracted and quiet. I'm sure that he was already booking and road agent working. He was a down to earth type of guy but you still didn't want to disturb him while enjoying his quarter pounder combo.✋😃🍟

People that tried to talk to him about wrestling all had the same story: he's a grumpy ole jerk...lol! One Sunday after church, about 10 years ago, I was eating at the Chinese restaurant, and my friend leans over, and says, "Hey, that's Ole Anderson behind you." I turned around and looked...I didn't even recognize him, he was so old. Of course, I didn't say anything to him. Ole was one of those old-timers that basically didn't give a $h!t about anything or anyone, one of the best heels to ever lace up a pair of boots and always gave it his best no matter who he was against whether it was tag or singles, as Jim has mentioned many times, Ole was one of the best promo guys of the 80's, and I saw the famous footage of July 1980 when Ole turned on Dusty in the cage against The Assassins, that crowd there went INSANE and pretty much caused a riot, probably the famous riot that lives on in people's minds in professional wrestling lore. Also, people have said that Ole wasn't the sweetest guy in the world, but the way Ole was described from the gentleman that met him I guess was one of those rare instances. Ole had the intimidation factor that he had just by the look in his eyes. One more thing, Ole had every right to be pissed when Vince bought out his territory, and Vince and Linda both asked him if he wanted a job, Ole told them "go f*ck yourself".

Since kayfabe died it doesn't really matter anymore. Everyone knows it's a work now. But, back in the 80s it would've been bad for the business. However, there was no internet so the it's not like a little kid in Woodstock, GA was going to create huge waves or destroy Ole's career. All he could do was tell his friends at school. The info probably wouldn't go much further than that.

Not really. I met a heal when I was 8 (he was the top of the card at the time)years old he was very nice never broke kayfabe, went out of his way to entertain me for almost an hour. That was what made me a fan not just the kid that went to the show with grandma.

A heel being “nice” to kid can actually help more than harm. Kayfabe was built on leaving an emotional impression on the naive. Those guys were always working, making a kid believe enough to buy was their only job.

I tend to doubt that he came in and just didn’t give a fuck at all. I could see him possibly resigning himself a bit to the situation around him and not being as apt to push back hard at things he may not have liked as he may have in the past. I mostly tend to doubt that he just didn’t care at all when you hear stories about how abrasive he was behind the scenes in WCW and attempts to gain power backstage. Those actions don’t come across to me as somebody who doesn’t care at all. I don’t think he “lost it” but rather like many of the territory bookers just didn’t adapt to what the tastes of wrestling fans became as time passed. I don’t think that’s losing it, as he probably would’ve still been a successful Booker for a fanbase with previous tastes, I just don’t think he ever was able to accept how preferences changed. To me that doesn’t reflect a lack of talent or intelligence. I just think it’s difficult to adapt to an environment that is entirely different from one which you have been involved in for decades. It would be a lot harder to be able to make such a drastic flip on that than many people think I imagine.

I love Ole but when you look at a young Mark Calloway (Undertaker) who’s almost 7 feet and could move like a cat and say he has no future in the business you’ve lost it.

that’s why we don’t listen to the old men all of the time, because heyman said the rapper gimmick would kill cena. and that was the last time he was actually fully enjoyable, they’re too stuck in their ways to see past their version of a wrestler

I would like to know the whole story if there is one of that statement. Marc Calloway as himself was not very exciting to watch. I remember in the 80’s the Calloway version of the skyscrapers was cool the first time I saw them but lost interest after a couple of times and never got into them. I’ve watched old videos of Mean Mark and there was nothing that makes me think this guy had the "it” factor to be an all time great. Mark Calloway as Mark Calloway May very well have gone no where. Just as Joe Laurinaitis might not have gone anywhere as Joe Laurinaitis. But with right gimmick (Undertaker, Road warrior Animal). They became legends in the wrestling world. If Ole meant that the character he was portraying at the time would never go anywhere I can see what he was saying. If Ole meant that the near 7 ft tall Mark Calloway himself with the raw materials he had going for him could never find a gimmick that would put him over....... then yes, history has shown he could not have been more wrong.

Ole Anderson was to NWA/WCW what the Portland Trailblazers were to the NBA: Always picking people in the NBA Draft who they THOUGHT were stars (LaRue Martin in 1972, Sam Bowie in 1984) over those who actually would become some of the biggest stars (Bob McAdoo & Julius Erving in ‘72, Michael Jordan & Charles Barkley in 1984)....😏

@ShadowAngel yeah, but Calloway was still young & raw at that time. However, most people in the business felt that he had all the potential in the world. Ole should’ve listened to Cornette & others on this one...
