I competed in the Iditarod 4 times from 2000 to 2008! Probably the best time of my life! Finished twice in under 10 days, no finish on my third race! And no, the dogs don’t die. They are checked by a vet every day and are removed from competition if there is any issues.

The Idelerod was first recreated in remembrance of the dog sled teams who relayed medicine to Nome, Alaska during a Blizzard to save people dying of Dipheria. One of the dogs involved, Balto became famous and had a movie based on a fictionalized version of him.

I got to film the start of the iditatod in 2017 when the start was moved to fairbanks, we went up as part of a school trip. It was -30 degrees F -34 degrees C and it felt colder than that with wind chill. i didn't envy any if the mushers or the dogs as they left. I was freezing even though i had about 6 layers of different clothes as well as winter boots and a snow suit

12 to 13 dogs are on the team but only 7 to 15 dogs can be pulling the sled at the finish. 5 dogs have to be tied to the back of the sled running behind it when you cross the finish line.

They put little leather boots on the dog's feet so they don't get too cold and split open and they take breaks every so many hours show the dogs can sleep and eat I have one of the dogs get sick or hurt their steps at every stop to take care of them and if the doctor thinks they're too bad to carry on it'll stay there with her until he comes back and then they'll put it in the car to use or slides in the open spot there and wrap him up so he's good and warm.
