I think one of the reasons JR is still working is he doesn't want to be alone in a empty house. With his wife tragically dying, he probably wants to keep busy and keep his mind occupied and focused. If Jan was still alive maybe he would be retired or doing a lot less work than he is now.

According to Jim Ross himself on one of those Conrad Thompson interviews ("Grilling with JR"), Jim claimed that in some meetings behind closed doors that Vince would mimic/make fun of his Bell's Palsey just to get laughs from the boys. @@jimmyjames6882 There's nothing "wrong" with it if we're talking morals Jim Ross isn't like a sniveling careerist like Terry Taylor, who is a transparent two-faced guy. Ross is all that except that he likes to brand himself as salt of the earth, straight shooter Jim. Is he? I don't think he is at all. We're talking about someone who negotiated on behalf of Watts to Jim Crockett the entire package of Mid South, never bothering to mention that all of Mid South's syndication by that point was nothing more than glorified debt, by the millions. (To this day, JCP insiders still can't explain why Crockett went millions in debt, because none of the support behind the financial decadence thesis explains that kind of debt load.) Ross did that. Then he had the nerve to try to quit WCW after Watts was gone because he wasn't trusted to take up the role. There's a lot of evidence that Ross was a long-time snitch to Meltzer as well. Which gets to the point about Ross. He's a careerist who likes to play a straight shooting cowboy gimmick, but he has always had a stake in wrestling where he'd talk to enemy sources, sink supposed friends, get into petty feuds with people like Tony Schiavone. In Ross' world, like a lot of those rasslin "thinkers," I just think of him as a Watts guy and that that colors everything he does. (Why else would he call to bring up an addict burnout pushing 40 like Dr Death Steve Williams in 1998 when nothing about him fit with either the company demands or even in health?) Then to think he taunted Bart Gunn for daring knocking out his junkie? That's why they mess with him. Ross could say now that if his wife were alive, he wouldn't be in wrestling. That's a delusion or even a lie if he's honest with himself. Ross wouldn't know what to do if he wasn't working. Given how much money he has, no one would have tolerated from WWF executives what he did if he could live a day without working. Triple H could ask Jim Ross how hard he'd blow Dr Death and Ross would answer in the affirmative

I don't buy the excuse that in Vince's mind, he's playing with or making fun of people he likes. It's bullying, especially in a professional enviroment where people are more sensitive about diplays of humiliation, superiority, etc. And there is one simple way to prove this - answer to the question "Would Vince enjoy it if it was the other way around?". And if you worked at various places for a longer time, you know the answer is "No." and you know he would be angry and insulted. People like Vince always like to pretend their bullying tactics are just "fun". They're hypocrites and JR is absolutely right to be angry about those things.

Read or listen to JR's books/audiobooks and I think one may walk away with a different viewpoint on JR. He basically sold his self respect and dignity time and time again to Vince McMahon all under the guise of "doing business" and "John Wayne, it's scary but saddle up anyway" mentality. Vince 100% shit on him to belittle and embarrass him. Some sick level of showing dominance over an employee whom Vince knew loved the business and his job (announcing) to a fault so he abused that at will. After the last humiliating act Vince tells him "Goddamnit pal you finally gave it all to me" or some stupid ass line. smh!

That 2K14 event was SOOOOO surreal for me. I playtested that game about half a year before it was released and knew all the big names that were going to be in it but had no idea that they'd do a big rollout with so many legendary stars sharing the stage, a Summerslam special reveal event, etc. They really pushed that game like they hadn't any other in the series, and I believe that it was to help smooth the transition between THQ and 2K for the benefit of the consumers. Watching the whole thing become as (relatively) big as it did, and then with Flair making headlines and Ross being fired, was so bizarre because I was, in the tiniest and most tangential way, a part of it. The THQ / 2K staff thought that the whole thing was great, but the fallout from that whole event was just...again, I don't know what other word to use other than surreal.

So in short. Vince is a complete asshole and if you did not have to deal with him you would not. But, he has the money/power to get away with it because people rely on him for work and money. Vince always showed disdain for anyone who wasn't solely made by him or was from the South. So knowing JR was his greatest commentator and Austin was his greatest star and both contributed to saving his company, I can imagine he always resented that. Andre may be the only person I know of that wasn't solely his that he truly cared about and never disrespected. But I attribute that to them being so close in age, he must have seen him like a brother.

It makes sooooo much sense to fire Jim Ross for Ric Flair's drunkenness. It is like punishing a guy who witnessed a murder rather than the murderer himself. Cornette is such a Vince apologist trying to spin this and say it is Vince's "sense of humor." That is just sick behavior any way you slice it. He wanted to punch Ed Ferrara in the face doing Oklahoma and rightfully so, but Vince imitating Ross's bells palsy is not as bad for some reason. It makes perfect sense. Jim Ross was fired in 1994 for his first bout of bell's palsy and then brought back when Vince had his steroid trial. Now, Vince has made WWE the most unwatchable trash in its history and makes WCW in 2000 look decent by comparison. Vince is an asshole. Period. Also, he is friends with Donald Trump and Cornette never mentions that even with his TDS. I respect Cornette's knowledge on the history of wrestling and current state of it, but his Vince McMahon asskissing is so insufferable.

In all honesty, it was more 2K's fault than it was Jim Ross's. Flair should NEVER had been there. He was grieving the loss of Reid as well as hitting the bottle pretty hard during Summerslam weekend (there had been rumors that Flair was actually really inebriated from fans) and Vince was like "Well I can't fire Heyman, he's got a program with Brock and Cena", so Jim Ross was essentially the scapegoat.
