Meltzer has stated that his ratings are relative and contextual. On his podcast he explained that he thought this parking lot brawl was very effective in its intent and better than contemporary brawls of this kind. In other words, he rated a wrestling match like many other film, television and music ratings are given; contextually.

Orange Cassidy popping up was easily the most off-putting thing about the match. Here you have 4 guys fighting seriously going through windshields and then suddenly Orange Cassidy just pops out the trunk for the lols. Seriously if AEW wants to push Best Friends as a legit babyface tag team then at least stop having Orange interfere in their matches because it makes them look like a weak tag team.
@mariejohnson1659
@mariejohnson1659 4 жыл бұрын
So if Sammy would have popped out of the trunk would you have had a problem? Orange did not do anything silly or goofy like he normally does. He popped out of the trunk doing his superman punch with a chain around his fist. Didn't Santana and Ortiz kicked his ass about month ago? So his well within his right to get a little revenge on them. And it did not hurt he match it was still a good match, but not a 5 star match.
@DreamStepper

If it was anyone I would've had a problem. The two babyfaces shouldn't be the ones resorting to interference to win their matches period as again it makes them look weak.

@@mariejohnson1659 How is it not silly when he was sitting in the trunk the entire time, and just sat there like it was nothing. Then when the trunk was opened, he just casually popped out looking like he literally was just sitting there waiting. I don't think Foley's a mark, but I think "great" is a little too far. If 'great' is beyond 'good', then "good" is as far as I would go. I can't look at a fight where someone hits themselves in the face with their own weapon through not fault but their own, as great. I still respect Berretta, and don't think that ruined the match, but CM Punk's had better street fights. BJ Whimter has had better street fights. The Nation Of Intoxication have done better.

Cassidy wasn't needed, but he didn't come out an act like a goof either. Chuck was in trouble and remotely opened the trunk. Cassidy comes out with a chain around his fist and does a superman punch to give the edge back to Best Friends. He didn't come out and do shin kicks or roll around or something. The fued started off as 2 bullies having fun fucking with a couple band geeks. The band geeks fight back after a while and things escalate. After weeks, things have escalated to a boil they have a brawl in a parking lot. They didn't do a WWE brawl or a WCW brawl, they had a hard hitting, bloody street fight to end the feud. They already had a regular match so they needed something more to finish things off. Meltzer giving it 5 stars was fucking stupid, but it was easily the best street fight we've seen in 30+ years.

This was one of the most highly regarded matches of the year by more than Dave Meltzer. If you go back and look at the archives of live watchalongs & podcasts, as this match was ongoing viewers were flipping out and praising the match as it happened. Meltzer is well known but he's not the only person to have praised the match.

Yeah, but how many of them have the longevity, seniority, and Industry pull that melts or has? I mean, there might be a point that Bob's podcast and Tom's blog both gave this thing two thumbs up, but I don't know who the hell I either of them are and I don't care. Meltzer's been doing this crap as long as I've been alive and unlike a younger person has a long history of things to compare to when deciding if something is a 5-star review. So Bob maybe giving it 5 stars but he's only 25 years old. Meltzer has seen some of the true Classics in action. As for me? I think the whole concept of best friends as a tag team is something that belongs with Saturday morning cartoons and big bowls of Cheerios, but I cannot and will not ever take Cassidy seriously. Call it what you will but I get irrationally angry every time I see him or his half-assed Mongoloid shtick

@@cthulhupthagn5771Concerns about longevity with regards to opinion making is largely useless. Society is transitory in its values and perception. Criticism, rating wrestling matches isn't really critique in the same sense as film but let's just get on with it for brevity, is most useful to audiences when it reflects the contemporary views of the audience. It has been so since like, Oscar Wilde. That said, I don't care about Meltzer's rating personally. I think ot is important people realize Jim, Bob and Tom may have different views of worth considering to your own sensibilities.

Wish Jim had seen this without any outside influence, but sounds he's out to prove Dave wrong rating-wise. This was a great grudge match for new company working to grow an audience (thus not on PPV.) Certainly people would, and have talked extensively about it so it accomplished what it likely intended. Maybe not the greatest of all time, but pretty damn good versus most everything streetfight-wise in the last decade or so. Always love the analysis; just don't always agree. 🤙🏻

Pockets aka The Goof started to get over with me cause of Cornette's rants. I basically want to tune in to see what Cassidy is going to do just based on the rant I am going to get with Cornette later. PS the idea of doing a stunt in a film is NOT to get hurt. There are also some continuous takes in shows like Daredevil where stunt performers have brawls.

These types of matches shouldn’t even have star ratings. With that being said, I had no desire to watch this match at all as it was about to begin, and I even almost turned off my television before it began, but I stuck around to watch it, and, by the time it was over, this match totally won me over and I even popped for the Orange Cassidy spot. This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen on AEW programming. Even Jim Ross said on commentary that this was the greatest street fight he’s ever called in his career. And it just might be the greatest street fight I’ve ever seen in my 15 years of being a wrestling fan.
