@@billybarnett9518 they don't even have to switch roles that's the thing. You have tweeners that will fight any heel or face, those tend to get massive support. Dave is so up his own arse in the meta analysis of wrestling. He doesn’t understand that in Kayfabe your best wrestling match would be a one minute squash of an opponent. That is the thing I have seen a lot of in AEW. They put what are supposed to be main eventers out there with absolute nobodies. Then those supposed stars have to take 15-20 minutes and barely win. That is beyond silly. In any other era it would be a squash, where if you kinda liked the underneath guy he would get the start of a hope spot, then done.
@jackieparmz
@jackieparmz 27 күн бұрын
This is a great point and pretty similar to a thought I had while listening to this… Dave seems to be at the point where someone like Toni Storm, a world champion, having a heatless competitive 7 minute match with an inexperienced opponent is actually a great display of how good of a wrestler she is, because she can go that long with someone who’s green and make them look alright. Which is all good a fine, Toni is definitely a good hand, but the point is that it doesn’t make any booking sense when trying to build an angle for a championship match not even two weeks away with a different wrestler who’s known for being a technician and a badass. It’s a microcosm of Dave and the IWC’s mark mentality, which is that they’re watching not for the angles, the stories or the personalities; they’re watching to see how many moves each wrestler can do in their choreographed routine and how long they can do it for. And that’s precisely why Dave blathers out the word “match” as often as he does… to him, the professional wrestling experience is sitting at home by himself in front of a television or computer and watching matches after they’ve originally aired, often without commentary he understands, and being impressed by how long the match went on and how many flashy suplexes were done, with bonus points awarded if the wrestlers actually look like wrestlers and if the crowd is large and excited about the event. It’s such a soulless and pathetic way to enjoy wrestling, which is why it appeals so much to the type of people who don’t have a life outside of this shit… Dave and his followers have fully convinced themselves that their understanding of professional wrestling is superior to everyone else’s, and since they don’t have anything else, they can’t let it go.

@rjuniverse7289 27 күн бұрын
Yes, but here, Gable is a cheezy heel, Reed is an intimidating monster heel(who doesn't rely much on cheap tactics), they both had a match which ended in DQ after Babyface Sami Interfered the match because he has been the target for them for few weeks. The feud isn't a heel vs heel, the feud is a babybace Vs a Cheesy heel Vs a Monster heel. And the thing isn't just about being heel Vs heel, it's about how a babyface is acting like a heel while the heel is acting like a babyface which doesn't make sense and the constant switch between a heel and babyface without a reason. You know the way Tony Khan books, if some face gets booed this week in a match, he will book him as a heel in the next week match, but no explanation, no reason, he is now heel because he was getting booed. If some heel is getting cheered massively despite beating the shit out of another babyface. He will start to book him as babyface next week because crowd are rooting for him because of something. He doesn't bulid the face turn. He doesn't build most of the turns.

@rjuniverse7289
@rjuniverse7289 27 күн бұрын
@MattyPeq Otis is a face being forced to do heelish things by his mentor Gable. He is tied right now because it's his best friend. it's his mentor, who gave him his opportunity in wwe, so he has been left with no choice but to listen. He hasn't turned on him yet because he has a sense of loyalty towards him. That's how sympathetic babyface is built, this will get him even more over as a face. If you can't separate that, then I don't know how you keep up with stories. The day Otis finally hits Gable, he will get a huge reaction. A similar sort of story has been in wrestling since forever, where someone is compelled to do bad things because of his mentor, tutor, but finally, he has enough. There's a reason he is compelled to do heelish things even though he is face when he has to, not like Tony Storm where without a reason someday she becomes face, someday she is heel. Dave has the dumbest take. He can't even give valid reason on why he thinks it is good and why it's not, when he has. He is just a knowledgeable wrestling historian, but the more I listen him the more it becomes clear he is far away from the indepth knowledge of wrestling business psychology. How can people take someone opinions seriously who can't even back up his reason for something he says clearly.
@rjuniverse7289
@rjuniverse7289 27 күн бұрын
@MattyPeq just look at Wardlow and MJF story, Wardlow was a heel. He was a monster heel under MJF. He then, somewhere on the journey, developed some positivity. He had already become face from his heart, but he couldn't because he was tied with MJF's contract, who is a master manipulator. His contract wasn't with AEW, but with MJF. MJF gave him his job. So, even though MJF kept insulting him and talking smack with him, he had no choice but to listen him. He felt a sense of loyalty towards him. But one day, the MJF crossed that one line, which kept Wardlow with him, and finally, Wardlow got courage and a reason to hit MJF, but at what cost?? He lost his job, but looking at the progress he had done over years, he got an opportunity for a job with a match in aew, if he would win, he would get a job in aew. He won that match and then got signed with AEW . So, he finally, after all the drama, he became free from MJF. That's how Wardlow was built. But then, AEW completely fumbled the booking of Warlow, and now his worth has completely derailed.

If you had a show where 2 nameless guys in black trunks just did moves back and forth for an hour for absolutely no reason, Dave would say that's a "great show". He LOVES to watch people play fight, with no context or rhyme or reason. He has completely forgotten that the entire reason it's predetermined is to tell a story in order to keep people interested and paying to see the show.

Another thing that flies over Dave's head: why does Toni Storm need to 'show she can wrestle' before the PPV match? It's not like she just debuted for the company and no one knows who she is or what she can do. She's been in AEW for over 2 years, is a 3x Women's Champion there and before her current gimmick, her whole gimmick for over a year and a half was basically "hot girl who can wrestle good". Going 7 minutes with a nobody doesn't prove she can wrestle; if anything, it shows she's NOT good at wrestling, if it takes her that long to beat a nobody. Logically speaking, why would Deeb -- whose entire gimmick is that she's the best wrestler in the division -- even have to break a sweat to tie Toni into a pretzel and leave with the belt if Harley fucking Cameron was a competitive threat to Storm?

Part of the problem, one of many, with Dave Meltzer's argument, is his premise that Toni Storm vs. Harley Cameron was a "very good" match. Except it wasn't. It wasn't a bad match, but it wasn't very good either. It was a fine match. It wasn't offensive to the eyes, it was enjoyable enough on its own merits, but you couldn't / wouldn't reasonably call it a good wrestling match either.
