@davyjones20323 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think a lot of that is the shift to people liking indy style so much they forget about promos and being a star. I think the in ring ability of wrestling today is better than the past even but the promo ability and being a wrestler is far worse. MJF (and Brit) are some of the handful of wrestlers who carry themselves as stars and coincidentally are very popular without having to have 5 star classics and flip all day.
@leerobbo923 жыл бұрын
Easy to forget, but it was the promos and stories that made the stars in the AA. Got to start somewhere. You don't get the Austin we know and love without that year-long feud with Bret. You don't get The Rock or Triple H looking like massive stars without their IC title feuds and the Nation/D-X. Sometimes guys can walk in as stars from the moment you give them a character (e.g. 'Taker, Hogan), but in the modern era that's just not gonna happen anymore.

As a fan of both promotions, starting with WWF back in the early 80's, it's gotten to the point where WWE is a chore to sit through. While in the beginning AEW was an interesting alternative for in ring action, in recent months the mix of the original roster, legends and WWE cast offs has found a nice balance and turned this into THE show of preference for me. The influx of quality talent such as Punk, Bryan, Black, Cole and even the repackaging of Miro compliments the solid workers that AEW already had to start with and makes the shows actually FUN to watch instead of a slog. Reigns and Heyman have been the only thing worth watching for months on WWE and that's starting to run it's course at this point. Punk vs. MJF on the stick was a joy to watch, popped me the whole segment and has me excited...meanwhile on WWE, oh hey the fake $100 million egg was stolen for a selfie, but it's back in Vinnie Mac's possession now so I can rest easy lol. Come on WWE get it together, how bout firing some of those writers and keeping your top talent instead and putting some faith in them like you did in the 90's. It's hard to imagine WWE ever being able to mount an Attitude era type comeback at this stage. WWE can't get out of their own way, and aside from the ratings numbers they cling to that don't matter to me as a fan who goes by the eyes and ears rating system, AEW has been eating their lunch for a while now.

Because of my O.C.D and the fact I have Savant syndrome, if i attempt to watch a wrestler who is on steroids/HGH or a wrestler that has awful Basic's I get locked on and end up have Fits. So with WWE pushing Roided up clown's such as Reigns, Orton, Brock, Cena, Charlotte Flair in terms of the women's division and countless other's over the last 18-20 year's, I have not watch anything from WWE since I found out the company had a wellness policy in 2003. Prior to find out about the companies wellness policy I never had problem's or issue's watching WWE, but when I found out about it the moment a wrestler on steroids was in the ring or a wrestler that was just crap with bad basic's I would get locked on and have sometime violent Fit's. Till AEW came along all I watched was NJPW, AJPW, NOAH, Stardom, TJPW, ROH, WXW and other European Based pro wrestling companies such as WCPW, Progress wrestling and ICW to name a couple in the UK and bits from the indies in the USA such as PWG, MLW and some PCW stuff as well. And yes in AEW there are a few things I just cannot watch again because of my O.C.D and the fact I have Savant syndrome, such as The Fat Dark Order guy in a gimp mask (The rest I have no issue watching as most of them can wrestle, if only a little), Dwarf Dong Sucker, Chucky Cheese and his pet Orange Juice (I can watch Wheeler Yuta, Trent and Kris Statlander), Abbadon, 'The Meth Addict' Joey "Jelly Belly" Nutela, and obviously Brian Cage who is the only person I react to in AEW because of steroids/HGH. Anyway I hope AEW just throw away these names I have listed above, but I would like to know how many actual Tag teams AEW has signed because if they have as many as I think they have then if it was me I would probably bring in a set of US or North American tag titles. Also if I was Tony Khan I would look into speaking with ROH and buying not only the tape Library but the actual company and all asset's and intellectual properties as well as buying the air time on Sinclair broadcasting as well. And I would hire guys like Silas Young, Dalton Castle, John Greshem and Other's to turn ROH into a development Territory even include guys like Matt and Mike Sydal, QT and Dustin. This way they have somewhere for new, young, green talent to go who are not ready to be on national TV the likes of Jade Cargill, Red Velvet, Dante and Darius Martin, Bear Country. But also rotating the Green Young Talent as well, and also making deals with the NWA, Impact, MLW and others so it allow's the young green talent to gain experience and reps.

9:30, this comparison is so interesting. I loved this segment because it first and foremost was awsome, but also a very clean and professional promo battle that showed great wits, sharp thinking and made me excited for more promos to come. As a fan of most of the Young Bucks segments I agree that they are sometimes overly silly and the comedy might not hit, but I like it 9/10 times. The spot where Adam Cole has a guy in a "Camel Clutch" and the Bucks run the ropes 5 times and then kiss him pops me every time. However, I also dislike it when they do crazy matches and there are kick outs of tag team finishers, on the other hand I don't have a problem if those covers are broken up and they sell it for a bit after it happens (when they gave Christian and Indie Taker on the outside he was out for the rest of the match). I also dislike silly teamwork spots if it stops the flow of a match and people have to wait around and stand in place, but if that doesn't happen, I mostly think their matches. Also these teamwork needed spots show up more in Lucha Bros and Jurrasic Express matches, when they don't face the Young Bucks. I cannot for the life of me figure out how Brian and Jim both hate Orange Cassidy however. I think its funny, its over and different. Pac vs Cassidy at Revolution 2020 is one of the matches I show friends that don't know wrestling to show that its cool and they mostly agree. Cassidy is in my opinion consistent in his character. He shows off when he's able to, but he also sells when he has to and he does so in a smart fashion. If his knee gets dragon screwed he will still sell it 10mins later, when he barley can lift his opponents or jump for his finish. I also don't like the Matt Hardy stuff, but I enjoyed his Impact work.
@Brendan04283 жыл бұрын
I agree with what u said. Im not a fan of Matt hardys stuff, I feel like private party should leave the HFO and go solo. I lxved them when it was just private party but ever since they joined the HFO they have been stale.

Promos to me in wrestling are like those moments where you're about to see a fight in high school (or junior high) where people are just trash talking each other. the difference is that when you get people who really can trash talk in pro-wrestling it pretty much becomes an art form. and for my money's worth, these two are the best promo people in AEW right now. normally, i hate long winded talking segments but this was an exception. this is the one we've all been waiting for. i said the previous week, the biggest question was what would CM Punk say to MJF eventually? the next question is are they going to say more after this? I feel like they have to just because MJF doesn't wrestle much and this is his specialty while there's still more on Punk's plate for more rebuttals. i liked how in a way they used this promo to really put over certain people. Britt Baker and Darby Allin got put over big time, especially Britt Baker. CM Punk can't wrestle Britt so this is the next best thing in helping to improve her star power. Darby got his props by being called the soul of AEW, even though both men beat him. Heck, I would argue the Miz got over in this segment inadvertently because of the Miz chant that would later break out (and the fact that Punk did call MJF a less famous Miz which can be taken in two different ways at least). Even John Cena and HHH were given some props indirectly. the "You can't see me man" description made me laugh and it would be funny just for Punk to annoy Jim if it turns out he'd wrestle the Invisible Man. but what i liked was that they addressed a variety of things here such as touching on Punk's MMA situation, his own fears returning, his past rivalries and even the criticisms people have said about his limited time in AEW thus far. Everything so far with Punk has been a warm up leading to this point. This feels like his first real feud. The Kingston thing was good but still felt like a warm up but they can always revisit that later. This situation with MJF and Punk is the place where I think more people wished Punk probably had started but I like how things have led up to this point for both men. And the thing about this rivalry is that MJF incidentally is playing Punk's foil. He's basically a younger version of Punk while Punk is playing the wary veteran, meeting a perversion of himself if he could wrestle himself back in time. The whole "I'm disappointed line" is great because to me it's like an adult talking down to a youngster where in this case, the bad virtues of Punk have corrupted MJF into what we see. And even if Punk goes over in this feud, MJF will be elevated unlike that time he spent with Jericho. Punk allows MJF to get his words in and slander him. What they're saying isn't exactly childish gibberish of the lowest common denominator (maybe a few cuss words but I'll give them that because they weren't the emphasis). They touch on what exist and it's sore points that the audience can relate to in knowing Punk's past. This is going to be really a joy to watch unfold. Hopefully, it won't be Wardlow and Shawn Spears ambushing Punk out of nowhere.

Some people have gone “to many WWE references”. Now, some people take shots at WWE just because it will pop the fans but here it made sense to reference (not shoot on) WWE MJF was compared to The Miz when AEW fans first saw him “You might as well be preaching Hustle, Loyalty and Respect” was a great shot at Punk keeps this really interesting story that Punk has become John Cena MJF saying that Punk could never measure up Cena or Triple H is great because of the real life history between Punk and Triple H Punk taking that shot at Triple H and Stephane makes sense and is 100% because they did the same to him whilst Punk was gone They wouldn’t have made those references if Punk wasn’t with WWE before. This segment felt real, it felt exciting and because of the references they were making it felt unpredictable because they didn’t really hold anything back (apart from a Colt Cabana reference) EDIT: love that MJF is calling everyone second best. I was saying for god knows how long that MJF and Darby Allin would be a money feud and I was right because that match at Full Gear was the best match on the show, that feud was great and now MJF is feuding with Punk which is even more exciting. MJF bounced back from the All Out loss then Jericho did and he won the match although, it seems they are beginning to build Jericho vs Kingston for 2022 and if they have a card with MJF vs Punk, Jericho vs Kingston, Rosa vs Baker, Page vs Cole and maybe Allin vs Black that is again one of AEW’s strongest looking cards.

When Cena used to be in segments like this he would interact with the crowd in a goofy manner like "ooooh no did he really just say that" and you didn't believe that anything being said got under his or the other guys skin. Again, we're talking about promo work here. The writers have little say on the in-ring product. Their job is to script promos and segments not plan out matches - that's the job of producers. Heyman and Reigns are standouts promo-wise but then again, that may just be Vince giving Heyman leeway. A rare thing in today's WWE. Few performers have been given this kind of freedom in the past decades. These people are hired by Vince and, as was stated by various sources, write what he wants them to write. It's been reported by former agents and WWE writers that Vince signs off on everything that goes on TV and is a notorious micromanager. We see and hear what Vince wants us to see and hear. This is in-line with the "work the house style" mentality that Vince has established over the years which replaced the old more unpredictable "work the style you learned when you first started" of the 80's. Vince likely wants stability and predictability. Which is fair. He knows what he likes and its his promotion and he has the last say on what content he'll produce, as he should. He'd rather avoid things like The Rock randomly announcing that he's calling CM Punk at the end of a show. But Cornette continues to tiptoe around this fact the way the tiptoes around Ric Flair's (and other friends of his') indiscretions.

I think it's only really bad when certain people take a shot at or bring up wwe. If the feud involves someone who was there it can be brought up reasonably, but if it gets brought up by guys like Kip Sabian or Joey Janela, it just makes them look kinda desperate for attention.
