I love these watch-alongs (as long as they're matches that are available on KZbin - no WWE Network for me). Cornette's commentary over this type of classic footage is great.

One thing really stood out during the watch along. How important it is to have great body language to sell the story and the action. It really makes a big difference. You see it from all four of these competitors. Without it, the action means nothing. Some modern-day wrestlers do a good job with their body language and selling but almost all of them are not in AEW. No wonder Corny mocks Omega so much for it.

Magnum T.A. was a huge tragedy. He was a girls dream. A man's man, his career was cut way too short. I honestly think his injury cost Southern wrestling a huge talent who, if allowed to mature, grow could have been the Souths Hulk Hogan.

I can’t wait to see Jim Cornette break down AEW. The fact that FTR “signed” a contract where the 10 second rule was put in it, the fact that MJF literally said what Jim does word for word, JR asking why they even have referees in tag matches, and Taz referencing that he should stand behind Cage because of what “someone” says. It was incredible how influenced by Jim’s word they are.
@charleswilson45264 жыл бұрын
And the dumb thing is that it’s all to help them out! MJF’s promo was incredible. Sometimes I think he’s a little to over the top but that was so perfect. It’s one of my favorite promos along with the Punk pipe bomb and the miz on talking smack

I can’t wait to hear about the thumbtacks on the bottom of the skateboard. I guess nobody ever thought that the possibility of the board landing totally flat on the back without skidding would be totally impossible. Looked like a pretty legit painful f bomb from the guy.

I doubt it'll happen but I'd love Jim and Brian to do a Watch-Along of Sting Vs Vader from Great American Bash 1992, it'd be a great follow up from Shawn/Vader SummerSlam 1996 because it's a perfect match to show how Vader got over in the US to begin with and how Sting knew how to make a monster as opposed to Michaels. Phenomenal match.

There is a good amount of NWA on demand videos on KZbin. Mostly all being held in Houston, TX, but it's a few different territories that are putting on shows in Houston. GAC, SWCW, Big Time/WCCW, Mid-South/UWF. NWA on Demand was ok while it existed. The little they had wasn't bad.

Would have Magnum TA been as famous as Hulk Hogan?
@atomtension56454 жыл бұрын
No, his entire name and persona were a direct ripoff of Tom Selleck,Magnum PI. Just like'Road Warriors', Sid Vicious, etc. (even Sting), taking the name from a currently famous person doesnt get you over worldwide. 'hulk' was a word before Hulk was a comic book.

I agree that none of these guys really look good to great with the exception of TA. But Bobby ends up looking better, and in '84 not everyone was as ripped as they are now. In this day and age with all the knowledge at our disposal, I believe what he is getting at, is that if your trade and dedication is wrestling in this age of rippedness then try a little more to look better and "fit in".

Jim's character is full of contradictions and quite predictable after a while, although the recent spat between Road Dogg and the FTR showed some character development and nuance (afraid his friends will fight, he tries to deflect their attention on a third party). This said, his "real men" statement was never fully explained. At times he's complained about performers not being tanned or not being tall or muscular enough. When asked about the plump Memphis all stars Dundee, Mentel, and Lawler or his cash cow the Midnight Express, he goes back to his vague and undefined notion of physical masculinity which doesn't mean 'roided physiques - unless it does. But the character portrayed by Cornette doesn't need to explain himself. His fans are willing to buy into ideas such as "common sense" and "masculinity" as shared, universal concepts. Much like "good" wrestling. The character of Cornette relies on this "everyone knows" bullshit and suggests that only fools disagree because it's what works with his fan base. This manufactured consensus and pretending that everyone agrees is what keeps his fan base content. If confronted with their own internal inconsistencies, conflicts, and contradictions, the fans of Cornette get angry and confused.
