Courier-Edberg was THE great matchup and rivalry of the early 90’s.

Tennis in the 90s deadly missed! Fast courts, diverent playing styles, short time between the rallys, no groaning at every shot, no exaggerated cheering after every single point..

Even after all these years, Jim's inside-out forehand is a thing of beauty.

I love watching him Courier, because of his great leggs and his unique style of tennis

The Rebound Ace surface really favoured the Bollettieri style power baseline game. Courier, Agassi, Seles and Pierce all had some of their very best results on it.

Big trauma still until today for me as a huge Edberg fan 😢

It looks like Courier was playing very well though. No sets lost going into final. Backhand as well as forehand on fire. Few unforced errors. Edberg didn’t look at his best I must admit

@@Ttjam1 Edberg's forehand was the weakest I've ever seen, although I am a huge fan of him, I wonder how it was possible to achieve everything he did achieve with such a weak forehand, against hard hitters like Courier and Agassi he looked helpless

@@WONGLERI haven’t watched a great deal of Edberg but it does look like he struggles to create pace with it. Can you imagine how even more lethal he would be with a big forehand to set up his volleys! Although I think his volleys became SO good in part precisely because his forehand wasn’t such a forcing shot. He had to learn to deal with strong passing attempts over and over.

I think the medium slow rebound ace surface was a step too far for Stefan. He was excellent with using his opponents pace on lower bouncing faster surfaces when rallies were involved and his forehand worked as long as the ball stayed lower without heavy spin. But the ball kicked high on rebound ace and he had to create pace rather than use his opponents. It was definitely much more difficult to do so.. Boris was more inconsistent at the AO but he still won two titles on rebound ace because it suited his heavy baseline game. (When physically fit).

@@WONGLER Sampras himself said once that Edberg's forehand was not as bad at all as it looked.

When a big first serve was 182km LOL, although tennis was great to watch when players had so much variation in styles and techniques

I watched both matches on TV with the same friend in -92 and -93. Everything was the same, the winner, the loser, the weather (at home it was early morning, snow and freezing cold, both years) / Sweden

First point is incredible. Today impossible!

These days you skip ten seconds after a missed first serve and the player hasn’t started their second serve yet. For 90s matches you skip ten seconds and the point could already be over. Love the pace of play between points back then

And to think they had to slow the game down because players were too powerful. I’m sure with modern rackets these guys would do quite well in todays game.
