Jim Croce did so much in just a couple of years. Almost every song was heartfelt, simple, but deep. Always a storyteller

I was going to say great storyteller for sure. And so pure and very talented. Many memories of my parents listening to him and I actually have some of his music on vinyl. ❤

a couple of years that we knew of, I'm sure he worked for many years to get there. Not important, he got there. I was in Junior high when his tunes came out. Such a great artist. such a tragedy.

We used to have an 8-Track tape when I was a kid. It was a double album titled _Jim Croce's Greatest Character Songs._ In between all the classics - "Rapid Roy," "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "Roller Derby Queen" - there were interview bits where he tells stories from his life or back stories about the songs. I wish I could find that album again. If y'all want an album to start with, I highly recommend _You Don't Mess Around with Jim._ Several smash hits, a bunch of diamond deep tracks - not a clinker in the bunch!

He wrote this song one night after he and his wife had gotten into a spat. He stayed up very late trying to put something into words he was really struggling with. Supposedly, he woke her up in the early hours and played it for her and she was absolutely blown away.

Always tear up when listening to his voice, same as with Karen Carpenter. They brought so much joy, beauty, and love into the world through their music, and passed away far too soon. The backing vocals in this song are so beautifully arranged and recorded.

Agree with so much of what you said. As a young person who hadn't experienced the life yet of which he sings, he still was able to convey those feelings to me in such a way that I felt those emotions deeply. And all these years later, I still feel pretty much the same way - he is that good!

I still remember turning to my girlfriend 50 years ago and saying "I love you in a song!" Jim Croce was an artist who was with us all too briefly, already dead by the time this one was released. Love what he accomplished while we had him, but can only imagine what he might have done with more time.

This was the final Jim Croce single released posthumously, in the summer of '74. This song also showcases the beautiful playing of Maury Muehleisen, the exceptional guitarist who accompanied Croce on so many tunes, and who sadly died with him in the same plane crash. We can only wonder what might have been.

Suggestion for next one: "One Less Set of Footsteps." Good combination of his talent for ballads set to a rock beat.
@JimiBurleighАй бұрын
Jim was an incredibly talented guitar player in his own right. Croce also had an amazing sideman, Maury Muehleisen. He was Croce's second guitar and he filled out the acoustic guitar parts brilliantly. Muehleisen died in the plane crash that took Jim's life. Along with Croce's tour manager and four others who perished in the crash.

One of my faves. It can be construed as a telephone song or a bedroom song in the middle of the night. I love how he ends the song without going through it again to drag it out.... he got the words out, so he ends the song. He's got so many love songs and emotional songs... but the ones I play on guitar are Bad Bad Leroy Brown, You Don't Mess Around With Jim, and Roller Derby Queen.... the fun bar songs.

I love him too.❤ The Bee Gees do the same thing. As their songs progress they add a little more of this instrument or that one. Their voices also rise as they become more passionate singing a song. Hey Alex, glad you’re into Croce. He was only active for a couple of years, but it seems like he had a much longer career because several tunes came out after his death… and more importantly because he and his music became such an interesting part of our culture.
